The french BB techtree really could be three to be honest. One based on the frontal main gun approach (Dunkerque, Strassbourg, Richelieu, Jean Bart), one focused on heavy broadsides (Normandie, Lyon, Flandre, Alsace, Bourgogne) and the two main turrets battlecruiser sniper role (Gascogne, Champagne, Republique). Really would be fun to have dedicated lines for different designs as it really switches from ship to ship...

How do you differentiate a ship to its tier like why is Ricelieu tier 8 and not 10?
@Neptune-or4vm2 жыл бұрын
Since they put in blueprint ships, Richelieu wasn't the strongest. It didn't have the biggest caliber etc. Hence why it's Tier 8. I'm not quite sure myself of how they really do it but that's just my assumption. It's also why Bismarck is only tier 8 or why Veneto is (I think also?) Tier 8. Only ships like Iowa (which really was stronger especially in terms of guns) is Tier 9 or the "legendary" Yamato which WG didn't even try putting in a Tier different than 10.
@xxnightdriverxx95762 жыл бұрын
because Yamato existed. Its that easy. And Richelieu is quite a lot worse than Yamato, simply due to the gun number and caliber.

Richelieu was definetely on the weaker side of modern battleships, mostly because of the obsolete gun layout ( as proved by the fact that Gascogne had a more normal layout): all forward quadruple turrets, which to me also look hideous. This was a result of the French navy rushing its development because they were spooked by Bismarck and Littorio, so they just copypasted dunkerque's layout to hurry her construction. Those guns had plenty problems but most of all had abysmal dispersion, way worse of any other warship and they could not hit a damn thing if it was in front of them. AA was as bad as it was for other BBs of the time. Operational speed was slightly above average. Also never heard anyone be overly enthusiastic about French warships steel quality. JB received some nasty penetrations at Casablanca, Richelieu almost got sunk by a single aerial torpedo and there were plenty scandals in the French shipbuilding industry in the interwar period.
@Leviathansgard2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Could you let us know your sources so I can learn more of those aspects I didn't know ?
@kasperskybohr98242 жыл бұрын
@@Leviathansgard huh you could be a bit more specific about what you don't know and what sources you'd want to get. I assume you already know about the 380/45 guns terrible flaws, even a quick look at navweaps will introduce you to their huge problems, I don't really need to repeat what everyone knows already. Even the gun layout problem is pretty well known. It was designed at the time of the Dunkerques with old ww1 strategies in mind, and it had more cons than pros, as I said, by the time the MN came to know about Littorio and Bismarck they just could not find an efficient design that was equal to those 2 so they sticked with the old dunkerque design to hurry things up, this is thoroughly described in Jordan and Dumas's book about French Battleships if you want to know more. Speed was average, about the same as Littorio and Bismarck, the 32kn speed was registered in the infamous low tonnage speed trials and during a trial with engine overload, which were in no way indicative of the ship's actual speed. Also AFAIK neither Littorio nor Bismarck ran those kind of trials. Anyway at service their speed was roughly the same. Actually a big flaw about Richelieu's propulsion was that there were just two indipendent systems, which meant that, much like the turretts, a good hit would get rid of half of the ship's power. About French steel quality, France could not produce high qulity steel at all in the 20s and early 30s for sure, which is why most french cruiser lacked armor plating, and only when Algerie was built this problem was somewhat solved, on the other hand it is well known that there is no extensive data on their performance which raises some doubts about what's said in the video, but from JB's armor performance at casablanca or Dunkerque at mers el kebir it doesn't look promising. As for France's shipbuilding issues... oh boy. I guess any book about France in the 1900s would help. Generally speaking France's shipbuidling industry had been in quite a pitiful position for some time, ever since after ww1, and France also was hit by the great depression quite late compared to other countries, with shipyards and companies facing serious quality issues, also socialist movements were quite widespread in France among workers: workers basically boycotted industries asking for better salaries and work shifts, which resulted in the slowing down of the construction of warships, including Dunkerque and Richelieu, with very few yards with slips large enough to build them. Another example of low quality was with destroyers of the le fantasque class which are discusses in Jordan and Dumas's French destroyers, whose hulls were built with low quality steel, and their engines often broke down and needed constant manteinance and some had to be rebuilt from scratch after trials as they were breaking down, despite reaching high speeds in trials. One of the most famous scandals involved the steel quality of deck seatings in the le fantasque class as the company that undertook construction used very low quality steel, delaying the construction for 5-6 months. This resulted in around 4 and half years from laying down to commitment, which is absurdly long for a large destroyer. Cruisers were built faster than that. So yeah overall if you want to know more just read Jordan and Dumas "French Battleships, 1922-1956" and Jordan and Moulin "French Destroyers". These are quite recent and up to date books by very well known and reliable authors. Basically everything I said in this and the previous comment can be found there.
@lephaytheo30982 жыл бұрын
@@kasperskybohr9824 ha yes, propulsion is a twin system so in case of critical hit you lose half your power is definitely worst that losing all of your power with a standard systeme. And for the "awfull" dispersion if your so smart you know that it's due to the 1st and 4th shell being in the trail of the 2nd and 3rd, and that and been easily fixed by delaying the fire of each gun by about 100ms...
@nemozinioux2 жыл бұрын
@@Leviathansgard "Jean Bart recieved some nasty penetrations at Casablanca" Yeah, from an american BB with 16-inch guns, that she wasn't supposed to ever face. I don't think french armor had quality flaws especially considering the high priority of the Richielieu battleships for the MN. Actually, the Richelieu would've easily faced the Bismarck for example, since she had an "immunity distance" where Bismarck's shells would have been completely useless against her armor when she could've kept shooting and penetrating
@kasperskybohr98242 жыл бұрын
@@nemozinioux @lephay theo uhm so both you guys have a pretty one dimensional look at this sort of stuff. About the propulsion system, you don't seem to know much about modern battleships. I am not "so smart", I just read books and look up my sources and try to understand as best as I can. It was indeed a flaw because other battleships had more than 2 indipendent systems, South Dakota and Littorio both had 4. IIRC one of the littorios ,don't recall who, was able to escape from matapan after having her engines knocked out exactly because she had plenty power to spare from the other systems. Richelieu on the other hand could only use her 2 port turbines after the disastrous flooding of the aerial torpedo hit, and she was saved because she was in port at Dakar. Had she been hit in open waters she would have been toast. The gun issue is a huge problem, the biggest issue because they were intentionally designed like that, so their behavior meant that they were a failure, coupled with poor french workmanship in the guns and faulty ammunitions. The American refit was fundamental to solve some of the most crippling problems, (she was basically more of an American battleship than a french one by then lol) but not enough for the dispersion, which would be fixed only way after the war with delay coils in 1948, which made the dispersion "acceptable" for those guns standard, but note that by then coils were widespread and other battleships fitted with them achieved even better dispersion. Either way it was a very very late modernisation that was not part of the original design. So basically both the bad turret design and the propulsion solution were chosen to save as much weight as possible, which was necessary to fit in treaty limits with the short time they had (they basically just upscaled dunkerque), but the cost was bad gun performance and the risk of having half your firepower or power knocked out. As for the damage at Casablanca, that is quite a naive excuse, south Dakota class had similar armor and they were designed to withstand 16 inch shells, but my point was about steel quality and overall worksmanship, and I explained my doubts with facts in the previous comment. I might also add that the reason why richelieu was almost sunk by that single torpedo hit at dakar was because of very poor welding that caused the flood to spread to other rooms including the "armored" citadel. her captain at Dakar, Marzin was even stricter, he explicitly called out her poor quality control practices, her poor design and construction after the attack. Then there was obviously the problem of poor shell quality control and design that was the main reason why one of her main guns was wrecked. I am not saying that french battleship steel was crap, since we have no extensive data on their battleship armor performance (besides casablanca), but the claim in the video is also unsubstantiated bull, on the other hand we have plenty proof about the extremely poor conditions of the french shipbuilding industry, the scandals involving quality control and the use of low quality materials, which makes me suspect that their steel was not British/Italian quality.

In the other hand french CIVIL steel production of the inter war is recon to be one of the best in the world, depending of the sources from 5 to 15% stronger than other European countries, military steel would follow the same principles, this is due to the easy access, via its colonies, to large quantities of chrome, Nickel, manganese and magnesium. Those alloy elements allowing tougher steel grade to be easily achieved. Moreover the presence of iron and coal mine in metropolitan France allow its steel factory to experiment alloy at lesser cost. @@lephaytheo3098 there is really no point in making all these silly comparisons when we have hard facts (actual facts, not like this video). But the main point is that you stated that it was a fact, so YOU must provide actual extensive evidence for french BB armor quality and performance, and to prove it was comparable to Yamato, which you won't be able to, as there is close to none, on the other hand We know that France struggled with the quality of the shipbuilding industry and there were plenty scandals about steel and general quality, I already mentioned it in the other comments. So yeah the statement about French armor is bull as the OP said and it is not a fact at all, simply because there is no proof whatsoever about french BB armor quality. @lephaytheo30982 жыл бұрын
@@kasperskybohr9824 that the point thicker armor can be not as good as another depending in steel quality, moreover the "trouble" in ship building are false or at least irrevelent because the "badly assembled" ship you keep pouting in exemple are ship that have to had their boiler repair because they were push well over their normal fonctionment point in order to set speed record. (When france do propaganda they just make special condition look like standard, it doesn't just invent digit) My point isn't that Richelieu's armor was better but similar in efficiency to Yamato's. And for the scandals about steel quality can you provide sources ? Just to be sure that this "poor steel" weren't still better performing than other nations steel? And just to remind you FCM worked in peculiar configuration of armor by creating a sandwich steel who would make bounce shell that would technically penetrated its nominal thickness.
