Samples was a stock car racing driver and carpenter by trade who went on the radio at the age of 40 and told a story about catching the largest fish ever seen in his hometown. The story was a humorous tall tale, and the recording of this radio story became a best-selling novelty record.

This record got him on Hee Haw. Archie Campbell had heard it. Junior really was just a good old country boy with a genuine gift for storytelling and humor. That kind of authenticity is sorely lacking in popular culture today.

I seen Jr. in Nashville in 1971. I was sittin' two people down from him at the Broken Banjo Bar. God, could he knock 'em back. I heard him say they was a' filmin' 8 episodes of Hee Haw in 10 days. Also heard him say he does his best work with a massive buzz. Seemed like a good feller.

The reason he could knock them back was because he weighed 400 pounds.

@@richardharris8399My mom was at a garage sale about 20yrs ago and was looking at Zebco 33 leaning in the corner. The woman said it belonged to her father. Hadn't been used in years . She gave it to mom. The rod was permanently bent from standing in the corner. I have caught more fish with that old Zebby-co than with all the other rod and reels I've ever owned.
