G'day Mates - here's a 5 minute build of a pretty crazy and fun 'lazy' antenna, that would be AWESOME for camping or any quick deployment. In fact, I think this would be the choice antenna for an emergency grab and go...being able to tune it and use it on any band.

Great idea Simon! We all have smaller tuners like this and the idea is excellent as it FORCES the user to place the ATU at the wire where it has best efficiency, not at the beginning of the coax feed where there would be losses in the coax. What I don't get is why the reel is not an RF short to the ATU chassis which is GND. I think you have a unique reel there or just got really lucky! I would mount the reel to a plastic cutting board, and then the board to the tuner. The plastic spacer keeps the two electrically disconnected. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK M8! 73

You’re absolutely right and I forgot to mention, I deliberately used that plug cast reel because the outer material is plastic and not metallic like some of them are. I love this set up mate I gotta say and I’ll be taking this camping with me this summer and it will be my grab and go and play radio funtenna 👍👍🍻

Don't forget winter! Multi-band antennas, like random wires are super convenient for me when I operate portable in the cold. I can switch bands without having to leave the car or shelter.

Hey David, good morning to ya buddy. How many counterpoises do you use? I love the Cat5 Ethernet cable as you get 8 wires! I love 8ft 9 inches counterpoise length mate, it works and I can make it resonant with a vertical radiating element for 10-40 meters, and with the addition of a tuner, 80 meters as well. @@thehamjazz hi Simon. After watching your video I have shorten and have added additional counterpoise. I’m going to start with 4 and check for improvement. The radio tunes well on 40 meters and I can get a tune on 20 and 10. I sometimes find it very hard to get a tune during the day for some reason. Still learning so I’m just taking it slow and writing notes on all changes so I can reflect on changes. The inverted Vee will go up in the weekend. I think living in Nowra, well Bomaderry on a gully has a little to do with some of my issues. All good fun. Thanks again, be safe. David VK2AAW

Hey there John, sorry about not showing clicking the dials. I did click the dials around mate.... infact, once I found out where the highest band was resonant, I was able to fine tune adjust for the next adjacent band etc. It is definitely a 'click this button and turn this knob and let's see what the SWR does' kind of thing.
