Wooo hooo Simon! Always a great video my friend! Here's a real world question for you ... given the size of that amp coupled with the IC-705, why not just replace both with an IC-7300 for an easy and consistent 100W on 160-6M? It's a much cheaper and more convenient package (not including the VHF/UHF option). Maybe those operators who mostly do QRP (with their IC-705 in this case), an amp like this gives them a QRO option once and awhile? What do you think since you primarily POTA with an IC-7300 like me 😀73 KJ6ER

Wow, that was great, I saw the upcoming live feed announcement but was going out5 the door to teach a class. I got home a few hours later, saw you were still streaming, and fired up my Xeigu G90. After some tuning around (including hearing two guys discussing medical issue of the old folks - which I'm one of), I heard you. I was glad I was able to make contact. Always a pleasure Simon. Thanks so much mate - I can't rave enough about these torches mate, and I'm getting lots of great comments from hams that have used them for decades, and in sub zero temps outside, just gotta be out of the wind obviously - but yeah mate, you'll love it. Woohooo! Thanks for watching buddy. Cheers!

A bit over a decade ago, I was tired of trying to run extension cord to solder, so I bought a cheap butane soldering iron from Harbor Freight and used it to make all my connections until it eventually disintegrated a few years later. I replaced it with a better one more recently, though I've not had to fire it up yet (though that will be changing soon). Enjoy the vids -- keep up the good work! 73 de N8ESP

I wonder if the soldering iron tip is like the one in the Weller Pyropen. I've had a Pyropen in my toolbox for over 25 years, it's indispensable. Rather than just a flame to heat the tip, there is a small ceramic catalyst that when hot converts the gas stream to even more heat! The actual initial flame goes out and it's just the stream of butane on the honeycomb catalyst that makes the heat.
@thehamjazz7 күн бұрын
Hey Michael, thanks for watching and leaving a comment mate. It sounds exactly the same as mine - there is a honeycomb catalyst inside. I just love this thing, wow what a game changer! Thanks again mate. Cheers!

Love this Simon. I've been using a battery operated small soldering iron. However, you have to keep your hand on two buttons to get it and keep it hot. I always need three hands to do anything, so it is difficult at best to make field repairs. I'm going to invest in one of these. Thanks for the great video. I tried to make a contact with you on your last live stream but I couldn't get through the band conditions. Cheers...73...Hugh...KN6KNB

Good idea and many thanks for sharing. I would advise to use cable other than Ethernet. They are a bit brittle and will break over portable operations - ask me how I know 😢 (not ham related). But the idea you had is great and probably will work the same with other wires. Thanks again for sharing

Have had that amp for a few years now and have always been very happy with it. Use it with my G90 and also my Hermes Lite 2 and it has never given me any issues. It's not a cheap amp but it is fairly indistructable with all of it's built in protections and the tunner is actually really good.

Relatively new to HAM. Doesn't the amplifier defeat the purpose of QRP or is this to serve the purpose of making a non-QRP rig out of a QRP one?
@thehamjazz10 күн бұрын
Hey there - great question. The point of the exercise is to have the ability to take a QRP radio and be able to turn it into a "QRO" 100W radio - which would come in very handy in an emergency situation when the bands are terrible, which they were on the day I recorded this video, and also at the bottom of the sun cycle. I love QRP - in fact I have 2 Icom 705 radios, but having the ability to run the 705 at 100 watts is just a total game changer. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment mate. Cheers!
@the.mr.beacher10 күн бұрын
@@thehamjazz thanks for clarifying. I'm not quite 2 weeks into starting to learn CW. Can't wait to do a POTA hunt sometime hopefully before the end of the year. Love this idea since I will probably not be able to get multiple rigs to start. This can give flexibility
