Back in the summer of 1969, I saw a freight train come up along side us where the tracks were about 100 ft from the interstate and my dad had to accelerate to 85mph to match it’s speed. And this freighter was so damned long, we couldn’t see the end of it looking out the rear window. That thing was MOVING. There were 9 engines in the front and God only knows how many more were further back toward the middle and rear. What a sight that was. Never forgot it.

Greetings from an African resident in Europe. I appreciate your efforts to shoot these images to train lovers in US and world viewers. I am some how familiar with North America Geography, Topography, Végétation, Rivers and Lajes. Because, during my collège time in Nigeria, our regional Education Board made it Madatory for each collège in my State, should introduce the geography and history of another continent Outside Africa, for finalement nous Year students. So we studied North American geo. and hist. Secondly, your colorful shirt outdor In winter gives thé impression that you confounded Bahamas, Namibia and Jamaica with cold season in United States or Canada. Great Job !

oh, yeah. half of us refuse to get winterized because the nature of the jet stream east of the rockies is such that it oscillates, vacillating from polar to gulf/caribean or how its spelled. 17 degrees today, 70 degrees in a few more. gets you just sick enough to keep your immune system in order.

That first train looks a lot like a WWOT train - they always travel at speed! Second train had a bunch of coil steel cars - haven't seen that many in some time :) Coal power plants are interesting. An operating plant has a massive coal pile (brought in by trains and dumped) and they have to constantly estimate how much coal they have so that they can maintain 100% power generation. If you have ever seen them unload a train - it is very cool! I am beginning to believe that JT is not affected by the cold at all. He says he's cold and yet he has a short sleeve hawaiian shirt and an open lined jacket. He didn't even wear his Yooper hat in this video :)

Yes, high-speed freight trains make plenty of wind. The fastest freight trains we once had in Germany ran at 160 km/h. However, the German Bahn discontinued these trains in 1996 due to alleged lack of demand. The fastest freight trains currently running run at only 120 km/h. In France, mail is transported at night with TGV ́s. These TGVs are then considered freight trains in France. These TGVs are travelling at a speed of 200 km/h between Paris and Lyon. Nice catch. Greetings from Berlin/ Germany. Sven

Back in the late 70s - early 80s, there was a coal fired power plant in Eastlake, Ohio serviced by Conrail. The railroad maintained a wye coming off their mainline (specifically, the "north control track" - so called because the switches were controlled by the dispatcher) There was a local job called the Willoughby Turn, and the crew for this job had three GP38 locomotives (occasionally one or another would be a GE dash-7) They would go out on the main line toward Cleveland, get the 100 car coal trains parked on a south siding a few miles away, and then bring the train back to the wye, where they would clear the eastern points and then back the coal cars down to the power plant, which was on the shores of Lake Erie. The conductor used his own vehicle to race ahead of the back end and flag crossings in the area. They would break the train into sections at the direction of the plant management, and put the sections into holding tracks in the power plant's yard. They would pull empties out and return them to the Collinwood yards in downtown Cleveland. I became friendly with the crew, and learned much by talking with them. They are long since retired, and Conrail is gone, so I may safely say that they gave me a few cab rides during that period. Your power plant images reminded me of all this. Thanks for sharing.

I lived on Campbell Road in Willoughby in the early to mid 70's and can remember Penn Central running F7's to power coal trains into that power plant before Conrail came into existence! I never got any photo's during that period though. I could kick myself for not realizing what was happening when Conrail came to be. Lots of colorful lashups for sure!

I’m guessing those trains were doing about sixty, probably set for 59. I think it is pretty rare to run GM trains faster than that. I have seen the UP run double stacks up to 79 across parts of Nebraska, which I always thought was odd since there is a max speed sticker in many locomotives that says 75. I’ve ridden freights on both the UP and BNSF that went as fast as 71 MPH. It’s loud;) Thanks for cool, literally, video!

Hey JT, it looked like a 100 ft gondola car was going by your spot in 1 second. 100 X 60=6000 X 60=360000 feet in an hour. Or 360000 divided by 5280= 68.18 MPH. In that ball park, but 60 is probably their speed limit. Thanks for the great footage! Probably a better guide is to use the CSX AutoRack at 89', 4". Which would have been 60.68 MPH if it passes by in a second........

These freight trains are indeed fast (especially the first one I think). The level track and in a straight line allows it. Filming up close increases the impression of speed. Be careful, however, not to film too closely because of the air movement caused, which could be dangerous! Which doesn't seem to warm our friend behind the camera either!

That's a rather a short time. I counted 9 of those tank units passing in 7 seconds and if I assume they are the longer 60 ft type, that works out at about 53 mph. There will be a bit of a tolerance on that of course, but I doubt it was as much as 60mph.

The maximum speed on freight trains is 60 MPH, Amtrak varies depending on location-power source (Diesel or Northeast Corridor) but since that was a groovy straight away it will move pretty fast. A neat location to watch trains on a straight away is located in Cassandra, PA overlook bridge east of Pittsburgh which is over a mile long and sometimes you can observe a swell 3 meet of Norfolk Southern trains, they also have a Norfolk Southern picnic table. Just google to see for yourself!

One usage for empty railcars is "break car". That is they add their brakes to the system. As an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/moSXY6yubNCcn6c The passenger trains they are hauling where wrecks damaged in the 2021 floods in the Ahrtal and had no working brakes. The engines alone could not brake the train so they added empty cars Sadly 52 6106 was not ready for that haul - having a steam engine haul it would have been a HUGE photo ops

Amazing video Jaw Tooth. I like the CSX trains. The 1st speed is 8 miles per hour, 2nd speed is 8 miles per hour, 3rd speed us 8 miles per hour. I like the coal plant, but I feel sorry about it they are taking it down. I love the animal time and you swinging your arm around. I like that on the Norfolk Southern line where that work train that was coooooooool. Your the man! THANK YOU. Happy Valentines day.

The first train had 2 locomotives and 113 cars by my count. The second train had 3 locos and 157 cars. When I was a kid, a train with more than 100 cars was considered super long and was rare. As for the power plant, seeing the stack come down would be neat. But, I would really like to see them disassemble the steam turbines, generators, and the boilers. I have wonder, what do they do with those? Are they scrapped or sold to other plants? It is such a shame that we are giving away our energy independence and nearly all the new energy and computer management systems are coming from China.

the boilers are usually scrapped. cut up in situ because they are mostly assembled in situ. in prior times the turbines would have been salvaged but the scrap market may get them these days. i would accept one or two too, to fill up a barn. the generators may find a second hand market but they are matched to their loads pretty specifically. without a market where is it going to go? my house or the crusher. the government is closing the cycle to where resale of this kind of equipment is not an option. i couldn't even find a way to buy a few sodium lamp cobra head streetlights and found it cagey obstructionist. big brother wants your old iron.

@@hardrays Thanks. I have seen large companies scrap items that other folks would like to have just because it is simpler to deal with.

CSX 3225 and 3224 must've been serving back-to-back for a long time. It's not common to see consecutively numbered units in a single consist

They are fast but they are definitely not the worlds fastest freight trains, I've seen much faster freight trains outside of the States.

Great sounds with you getting so close to a train going extra fast. In the second hot-rod train, those black and white banded tankers looked like Hamshire hogs zipping by. Now, J.T. you have been consistently brilliant for many years regarding video set-ups and finding interesting railroading operations and telloing the history of certain segments of the railroad network; but, gotta' say, complaining about the cold and wind-chill factor with your coat unzipped over a Hawaiian shirt and no head gear is, frankly, not too bright. You are loosing 60% or more of the body heat you could be retaining by a zipping up the coat and wearing a classy hat. I'm saying this, not because I'm you're long lost Uncle Jeb or Aunt Minnie, but because I'm a big fan of yours and want to see you stay healthy. Get garbed up appropriatly for the weather. Your videos will be just as great, and you'll be a lot more comfortable. Can never get too much of Norfy and Chessie - thanks for including them again.
