The fact is that most people don't know opera and don't understand what a powerful medium it is in and of itself. When they hear one of the more evocative pieces, such as Nessun Dorma, for the first time, it quite naturally blows them away. It's not just the voice; the medium itself has quite a bit to do with it. Opera communicates visceral emotion far more effectively than the swill regurgitated by the pop music industry.

Being an "opera sensation" IMHO means you are able to sing a WHOLE opera - without a mic, of course. And sing it 3 times a week for a whole season. All those youngsters in the talent shows have wonderful voices, yes, but I believe it's like with every other art: "5%talent, 95% training and self discipline and hard work".

For any of you who cannot see this talented young man for what he is, well I am sorry for you. Music is not just what comes out of someones throat, it is more the huge amount of emotion, passion and love he puts into his music. I for one think he is one of the best talents I have heard in well...... ever. Plus I belive since this audition he has sold millions of albums, so I would say he has done alright. I would like to add one additional comment, if I may. Mark does something which only the best seem to be able to do: When he starts to sing, he does not build up anything, from the FIRST note there is a magnificent voice; and he maintains full power and only adds more as goes through the Aria. Just mind-boggling. If somebody has the time and knowhow, may he/she would favor as with giving as the details of Mark's musical education.

These talent-based shows are easy to produce, because just about everyone can sing, or learn to sing, well. However, the ability to sing is only one small part of the career of a singer or musician. I would imagine, out of 100 people who have the ability to sing like a professional, only maybe one or two could actually handle the demands of the career, and the fame that could potentially be associated with it. Singing like an opera singer is one thing, succeeding at it professionally, is another.

The great Jussi Bjorling started his career as a baritone but was encouraged to train to be a tenor. Mark's voice is still young and developing. With proper training and practice he should manage the high notes in time.

More a high baritone, right now. It would be interesting to hear his lower register. As he is only 15 his voice will grow lower as it matures. Lauritz Melchior began as a good baritone and went up to a dramatic Wagner tenor. That too is an alternative. A good coach is necessary. Sing easier things with more middle register, Mark.

There are many classical composers who wrote songs or song cycles, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler, Hugo Wolf, Villa-Lobos. These are rightly called songs but when it comes from an opera it is called an aria, always has, always will be. People show their ignorance when they call an opera aria like NESSUN DORMA, a song.

I shared this video with my voice teacher, and he said this guy lowered the key of the aria which is a big Opera "No! No!". Opera singers know this! You don't change the key of the aria! If you can't sing it in the key the composer wrote it, then don't sing it! Paul Potts also changed the keys of Tenor arias on his CD, and then sang them in ENGLISH!!! Seriously, what the hell?

Some tenors are lyric tenors like Pavarotti. They sing higher voiced roles by Rossini and Donizetti. Other tenors are dramatic tenors, heldentenors like Vickers. They sing lower voiced roles like Wagner. And some tenors can sing both. But they are all tenors. This young man has a good voice, and with training he could become a professional opera singer.

As a voice teacher, I must say I would love to work with this voice! Although he has many technical difficulties, the fact that he can still produce sound while practically choking on his tongue tells me that with some moderate tweaking he could be a great baritone ... sadly not a tenor as the piece implies.

He very much has the potential of a tenor voice, since he can sing the high notes virtually without training. The majority of fully trained operatic baritones would find this aria almost insurmountable. He is simply a boy whose voice hasn't fully settled yet. His head register still requires development, as you would expect at only 15. His chest register also needs more work, but his voice must be allowed to settle in its own good time first. Teachers who didn't know what they were talking about have pronounced me everything from a baritone with bottom C of the bass, to a tenore robusto, - until I met a bel canto teacher who properly understood register development & enabled me to sing full voice F's above tenor high C. Only once the registers have reached full development & have been correctly blended will the voice signify its own placement & tessitura. To attempt to categorise it while it lies in an immature undeveloped state is imposing upon the voice rather than instilling functional freedom so that the voice can find its own fach. Both Caruso & Richard Tauber were both told by teachers that they had no voice & should give up any attempt at a singing career. The rest, as they say, is history.

Well he IS 15. When I was 21 I sounded like total shit. Really. Super weak voice and I couldn't understand why every other 15-25 year old had their voices so developed. I still have recordings of me from then. Then I turned 28 and started to study opera and now I'm closer to Renato Bruson/dramatic type of voice. Who knows wtf happened but I'm convinced that everyone is born different with talents that don't come out until surprising times of your life. Who knows maybe this kid can develop greater technique as he nears his late 20's. Sounds like a tenor that, at 15, can't sing above a G correctly. That's probably why he dropped the key on this so low. Who knows! Maybe he'll hit vocal puberty @ 25 or so. Gotta relax that tongue and jaw, though.

oxy occi So basically you're sorta chastising me for making an accurate assessment of his voice, then taking the same criticisms, and making them your own. I really don't particularly have a *problem* with that, considering I wrote the comment four months ago, but a group of reality show audience members going crazy for a crappy, undertrained voice and the talent trolls coming out of the woodwork? Well that's nothing new. I certainly never stated he couldn't get better, but if someone doesn't take a hold of this dude's training soon, he'll do irreparable damage that no amount of training will fix. I am a clasically trained vocalist who makes a weekly paycheck performing in musicals, which I've done professionally since 1996. I have performed in 48 states and three countries. I think I'm qualified to mention when I hear someone with some potential putting himself on the wrong track. Vocal technique is FAR less about miracles happening in surprising times of your life, and far more about having good tools from early on, and learning how to maintain your instrument.

Tenor. Those who think otherwise have not heard enough of his singing. He has quite a range and definitely goes very high. What is exciting is a tenor voice that is so very masculine and all this age 15.

Lewis, in this video the young man is singing the aria 1 whole step lower than written making the high note an A natural instead of B nat. I'm an opera purist hence it bothers me, however, the young man has the tools to go further in opera, how much I don't know. He does love this realm of music and I wish him the best.
