In this video, I break down exactly all of the steps I would take when doing this roof if it was my first time ever shingling, but knowing what I know now. In part 1 I broke down the order of operations for gutter apron, ice shield, felt and drip edge. In part 2, I detailed the importance of starter as well as how to put it on, and I showed you guys the extra precautions I would I take when shingling my first roof such as snapping lines every 5th row. in part 3 you get to see it all come together, i highly recommend that you watch parts 1 and 2 in full if you plan on tackling a roofing project of your own. I don't want you guys to miss any important details. Leave your comments below and thank you for watching!!

This is a phenomenal 3 part series and the best roofing how-to I've found. Watched all 3 parts from start to finish multiple times, picking up new things each time. Seeing you align the shingles into place for the correct overlap using the tip of the nail gun was genius. Big thanks to you guys for putting this together. I used a hook blade on my Dewalt oscillator and it made cutting the starter shingles and trimming the edges of the roof a piece of cake. I also cut two pieces of premeasured plywood (8" and 16") so I didn't have to do any thinking and the plywood made an excellent straight edge guide when cutting them with the oscillator. I also ended up snapping lines every 2nd row as I found it easier for a newbie to have more lines to reference and have that "reset" more frequently than every 5 rows.

I did some roofing back in the 70s and 80s, and I am about to re-roof my current house. I have been watching lots of video’s and learned something from most all of the videos I have watched., as the products have changed from the days gone by. I did find yours to be one of the most help full. You point out a lot of little tricks that will come in handy. one that I noticed that you did not pass on was the use of the nail gun to help line up the next shingle before nailing it down I thing that would have been worth mentioning. other wise super informative, thank you.

Thank you, I really needed all 3 parts 🙏🏻 ❤️, I'm 61 and forgot alot, I used to do roofing 35years ago, I'm trying to put solar and they want the singles changed to match the age of the panels, 20 years, my income is fixed and couldn't use credit for a lone(probably a good thing), so I bought the material and I'm waiting for the weather to clear, meanwhile I came across your video researching replacing asphalt roof shingles to freshen up, even mistakes are good to see, I noticed you didn't pull the nail, pulled the tile off and drove the nails down flat, thank you for your service, and thank you for your efforts 😀

Great video! Super informational just how it should be! One little tip that I've seen that is beneficial, is to have a piece of plywood that is a little longer and taller than your shingles, that you can cut on while you're on top of a roof. Just to ensure you don't cut into any shingles or the paper underneath!

I like the shingle cut method for beginners. We always laid them all, chalk lined, and cut them back at the end but that was on a 4-5 guy crew. I gotta admit, my first few cuts were pretty ugly, but you get very accurate over time and it keeps all of the roofing guns running.

One thing we do different on our crew is we cover the ice for our felt. It’s easier to keep it straight, the shingles won’t stick to the ice for later repairs/tear off, and it’s better grip to walk on especially when it’s hot.

Zacks a pro, I’ve learned a lot from him but it’s tough to remember everything off the top of your head. Owens Corning recommends 6 1/2 inches for your stagger step with a minimum of 4 inches and a maximum of 8. The “5 5/8” number he’s talking about is actually the height of a shingles course line (exposed part of shingle after applicators) not being a smart Alec just clearing it up for the newbies

Thank you guys for watching! I would like to add that I do not recommend diy roofs on your home... a garage or a shed is a little different because shingles don't usually leak in the field, they'll leak in the details (pipes, valleys, walls, flashings etc). Oh and i also I get a lot of questions about tools on here so if you're thinking about doing a project on your own or new to the roofing game I went ahead and located some awesome tools to help you guys out and they are all cheaper on amazon than the ones I find in stores. Links are in the description! Hope you find it helpful. Also, be sure to check out parts 1 and 2 if you haven't done so. Very important to this process. Obviously there's much more to roofing than this, so if you need help with valleys, ridge cap, ridge vent, regular vents, pipes, removing and re-installing dish satellites etc. I have all of that and plenty more to watch, here in these 2 playlists! Be sure to check them out! kzbin.info/aero/PL5lfy7rRhJVuCig7gNZ4EdxjDtIePxzRK kzbin.info/aero/PL5lfy7rRhJVu6DTqDxTxgwKlqaRhXgt0A

I appreciate your stair stepping tutorial/method. It helped me understand the process for a quick and efficient way to shingle a roof. I think the holding the knife as a gauge and placing the shingles above for reference for the next cut is genius! Anytime you don’t have to pull out a tape measure and pencil to make a cut is a huge help! Also you make two cuts and get five pieces to start that’s how to do it!! Thank you 🙏

This was facinating to watch. I mean, 56 minutes long and I was captivated all the way to the end. I didn't realize that there were so many cuts done on those shingles to create a good pattern. All those cuts substantiate the need for a good moisture barrier underneath the shingles. Also did not realize that shingles were stair stepped. I am learning a lot valuable information from your videos. Thank you so much for sharing all of your great tips.

I started doing tear offs in the 90s. Learned a lot over the years. This channel is great. One thing that I took in late even though I kind of knew it was a substandard product was OSB. Yeah it feels the same structurally pretty similar. But I was blown away during all the removals of new roofs due to hail storms. I was blown away that OSB could not hold the nails down. They can but not nearly as much. In the early years we would tear off a roof from the top down (usually). But things kind of changed after the hail storms. A lot of different techniques were created. Tearing off from the bottom showed how you could pull up on entire books. News to me. Roof Has to be new enough to do this. But through this it was very eye-opening to see the OSB failures. Sorry if I did not explain that well. Thank you again to this channel to helping other people

yea all i've really known is osb besides tear offs. definitely comes off pretty easy on osb camparitively. still a good product in my opinion and to be honest it's what 90+% of builders are using in my area. i almost never see plywood on new construction
@mischafellner2892
@mischafellner2892 2 жыл бұрын
@@NWIVeteranConstruction. Please know I was not commenting on the use of OSB I still use it today. Nor your use of. You’re a really good roofer and you share a lot and I wanted to point that out. Back when we used to tear of wooden roofs originally we did everything with plywood. Eventually OSB came through and yeah it’s cheaper and very similar. And I always thought it was the same. I think you’re going to get a lot of attention from your videos. They are very good. And I wanted to throw a couple cents in there. I’m not techy enough to make videos( sorry fat hot asphalt fingers). If I had the money I would buy plywood. Keep going you rock.

Roofing keeps people strong and healthy. I was roofing from 1982 as a kid my dad trained me well. I retired at age 50. Roofing has been very good to me. Beautiful vid. Let the homeowners learn and save from paying ridiculous prices nowadays. Roofing is a really simple aspects. Dad said to ," think like a drip , think like your water , where would you go ?? Downhill. Down slope. Think like a drip.
