As a yank stationed at RAF Upper Heyford from 1980 - 1983 and only BBC & ITV channels to watch, and I not being a soccer or cricket fan, I started watching Snooker. Steve Davis was the player that had me hooked. Jimmy White, Alex Higgins and many other great players allowed me to really appreciate the game. Being American where most billiard tables are 1/4 size of snooker tables, I was extremely impressed with the precision at which Steve Davis played. I've been a fan for some 40 years.

People were happy he won his first title but they started to hate him after winning
@johntcashdown13632 жыл бұрын
Yeah I remember the era well, it was sad really, that feeling towards him. But the next generation of pros didn’t see it that way and all copied him to quite an extent. Not so much Ronnie o Sullivan but he always makes it clear Davis was his hero.

You see him as a bit of a comic figure when he's on the telly now, but what a ballsy performance by young Steve.

See that first red! He doesn’t even get behind it to check the angle, just straight down and pots it! Class! Players these days would at least go to the top of the table for a look

First time I saw steve was in Toronto CNE 1978, automotive building, mezzanine floor, just getting his feet wet, he thrived in the 80's, has had a great career.

Barry's Barrel Barge and then his Barry's wife gives Steve a warm hug. It's like watching surrogate parents being over the moon for their "son" who they've invested so much in. I did like Doug's surprised "I've got friends" remark. A lovely gentleman and a cracking snooker player in his time.

Wow, never seen this before. Steve Davis at 23 very emotional at the end, but earned his title. I think the gray haired man who congratulated Steve is his dad Bill RIP. Doug Mountjoy such a great sportsman, gracious in defeat. There are so many missed voices in this video, such as David Vine RIP who sadly Passed away in 2009, I think also Ted Lowe RIP who commentated in the final, I think it is also the voice of John Pulman RIP. Thank you for sharing.

I love that snooker hasn't changed anything. In pool you have smaller pockets you have diffrent rules, you have diffrent cloths material and colors blue, gray, the classic green is gone, you have other cues, some rules vary, there's diffrent games, theres diffrent tables that run totally diffrently. But snooker is exactly the same as 100 years ago, maybe they added 1 or 2 new rules but thats it.
@truthseeker69232 ай бұрын
Good comment , Yes I think it's great that snooker hasn't changed in 100 years apart from the miss rule. The rules don't need changing as they are perfect as they are. Forget football - Snooker is the real beautiful game in my opinion
@hbgstorm2 ай бұрын
@@truthseeker6923 also when a sport never changes, it's easier to compare older players from back in the days against today players, more fun and accurate comparisons, as suppose to now when someone mentioning Earl ran 11 racks won a million $ , people go, oh the break was easier and the pockets were bigger. Same with formula 1, the cars were slower some argue they were easier to drive some say they were more difficult.
