I call BS. The first rule of surfing is not to drop in on someone. The second rule is if you do (say it looks like surfer is too deep, is about to fall, or just isn't capable of riding the wave), then ride the damn wave. Kelly dropped in, and rode the wave. Medina dropped in and turned into Slater. In a comp or in a free surf, that's crap. Period. It goes against what you learn surfing Swami's, Trestles, Sunset, Pipe, Todos Santos, or J-Bay. Medina has talent, but he needs to learn to surf. If you surf or have surfed, you'll understand my point.

According to the rule book (which I copy and pasted for reading pleasure) what Medina just did should be classified as “Unsportman like Use of Priority” and considering its Pipeline, one of the most dangerous waves in the world, I’d say this also falls into the “Serious Unsportsmanlike Interference” category (which I also copy and pasted below) Unsportsmanlike Conduct during a Heat 171.10 Using Priority In the opinion of the Priority or Head Judge, if a Surfer utilises their priority in an unsportsmanlike manner to intentionally block another surfer with lower or no Priority outside of the Primary Take-off zone an interference will be called against them. For the avoidance of doubt, a violation of this Article does not mean an automatic violation of Article 171.11. 171.11 Serious Unsportsmanlike Interference If the Discipline Director and Commissioner’s Office determine that an interference during an Event was intentional, unsportsmanlike and of a serious nature, notwithstanding any penalty available under Article 188 (which may include suspension from Events or an entire Tour), a Surfer will lose the benefit of counting their best Event result when calculating their Ranking on the relevant Tour (e.g. if this Article is violated at a QS Event, their QS Ranking will be effected). Notwithstanding any resulting discipline being imposed by the Discipline Director, the heat in question can be re-surfed if determined by the Head Judge that the result was affected by the Surfer’s conduct referred to within this Article.

medina dropping in on kelly was not what surfing is all about..definitely the type of move a competitive jock would make. i've always seen surfing as much more of an art than a sport. I dont care if he had priority...one of the first things my dad taught me in the lineup is dont drop in on people and even worse than that is never never shoulder hop. medina is an amazing surfer but that move was pathetic.

This wasn't an attempt to take the wave this was an attempt to divert his course away from the surfable wave and make physical contact with another surfer and benefit from it.
