I'd agree that Walkden should have got more gam-jeoms, but most of the penalties for Zheng are quite valid. For example on 13:02, you can see that Walkden is pushing to create space for a kick, and Zheng has her arm looped over holding onto Walkden's arms. When Walden is pushing Zheng out of the ring, he is not penalising for going out of the ring (a hand flip motion). He is penalising for avoiding fighting (two fists coming together motion). In these instances, Zheng has her knee up jammed up against Walkden and not intending to fight her way out. Had Zheng thrown a kick, and Walkden pushed her out the ring as a counter, this would have been a penalty for Walkden. If you have your leg jammed up against someone, and you're leaning back, on balance, you are the one more likely to be holding on to avoid falling over, or gettting pushed to a distance where you could get kicked. You are penalised by using your leg to impede an opponent's potential kicking movements. The 13:18 one you refer to, she is throwing body shots, and gam-geom is given to Zheng as he was pushed out while Walden was throwing kicks. They were not on target, but they weren't 'leg' kicks. They were borderline at waist level.

Having completed USATKD’s A level referee training, I came back to this video to see it with fresh eyes. Definitely a lot of mistakes by the ref in my opinion. Several missed Gamjeoms on Walkden for grabbing the opponent. Not sure what the rules were 2 years ago, but in 2021 you cannot push an opponent out of the ring. I’d also argue that many of the Gamejeoms for not fighting were uncalled for and they’re called so quickly after a Kalyeo. Walkden’s fighting aside, the scoring of punches is completely subjective and scored by the corner judges if at least 2 judges confirm the point. Not sure what these judges were seeing with some of these punches completely missing target and being scored. At the end of the day, the policy for refs and judges alike is never to discuss what happens in the ring unless an official appeal is made. We may never know exactly why these calls were made. If any other refs out there would like chime in, please do.

Can someone explain to me why Walkden won and not Zheng? (I train Taekwondo, but I don't really know the rules in fighting) Personally, Zheng deserved to win, she did not win 20 points out of 11 for Walkden to take the victory, I think because of the 10 pushes off the field, and I found it a bit sad that Walkden "forced" Zheng to get up even when she asked him to. will leave it on the ground :( I don't like this kind of Taekwondo, the Atenas 2004 have not comparation... The rules state that if you receive 10 total penalty points, you are disqualified. Although Zheng was scoring more points and should have won if points was the only way to win the bout, she could also lose it by conceding too many penalty points. A pretty terrible way to lose a fight, and with the penalties that she got, they were not obvious penalties, like low kicks and punches to the face. Instead they the less serious ones, like stepping out the ring, using your knee to avoid getting kicked, grabbing. Walkden changed her game plan, as it was going to be difficult for her to make up the difference in landing kicks, but aimed to pressure Zheng into making mistakes. Zheng had 9 penalty points with 1 left before disqualification with 50 seconds of the fight left. There is practically nothing she could have done to win the fight at that stage. She can't avoid fighting, as she would get penalised for that. If she slipped and fell over, she'd get a penalty. If she stepped out of the ring, disqualified. Walken would have pushed and kicked her for the remaining 50 seconds with the express aim to get Zheng disqualified. Not the most honourable way to win, but you shouldn't be conceding that many penalties.

I wanted to review a few points. First, we needed to know if pushing your opponent out of the ring are legit moves. If yes, she won having the best strategy. I think the Chinese player was unable to hold onto pressure to do a counter strategy. Maybe she is younger. The couch also should have time out. At the last 2 points with like a minute left, the Chinese player should just dodge and power kick push her back. She did steal the medal, but through strategy, experience and calmness. On the other hand the chinese player even though better was not planned well for the match. I heard she won a later match after this.
