When they took away my BAR I found myself in Tanks. We had brush fires often, caused by our pyrotechnics - same as you guys. We would swat the burning brush with our e-tools or larger shovels which worked well, but usually we just rolled over the burning brush with our tank tracks. Worked great every time.

I carried a BAR when they were still an item of issue. I get why you don’t have the bipod - every ounce counts when it’s on your back - (the weapon weighed 19.8 lbs, and after carrying it the first 20 miles we would drop the decimal point LOL - but I digress). However, the flash hider and the carry handle (on the barrel) would be necessities. The flash hider to help keep dust down and add to your concealment, and the handle would be indispensable when you have to get up and run quickly - like grabbing a suitcase - especially if it’s up on the bipod - not to mention looping the sling through it for walking forward with it in the assault position. IMHO, I would still have the bipod mounted to maintain an interpretation of historical accuracy - so people would be able to see what it would have looked like by regulation.

Good job kids… My dad and all my uncles be so proud the fact that you actually work so hard to reenact combat in Europe in 1944. In a way, it’s not much different than reenacting Civil War battles…… I had the privilege to do that when I was a young man All of this is very lifelike, except for the fact that in real life, men all around, you are being wounded and killed! That is the thing none of my uncles would ever talk about… war is a form of hell! Thankfully, I received Christ as a young man. I can only imagine the loneliness and horror these young men experienced without the hope of a savior!

So where the hell were your entrenching tools? I did WWII living history in Central Calif for almost 20 years. Every leg and Para carried an M1910 T handle or M43 folding shovel. We had a night battle at Fort Hunter Liggett and someone fired off a star shell that started a fire. Everyone had entrenching tools and put out the fire. Be prepared.

especially on the eastern front in the summer it was pretty common for dry grassy battlefield to just kinda...be on fire while there was fighting going on. When the ground is tinder like that everything from incendiary artillery, burning chemicals in smoke grenades, sparks & fuel from tanks getting knocked out, even to just tracer rounds from machineguns could and did light things up pretty quickly.

3 months ago I was at a ww2 re-enactment, and near the end a grenade was thrown and a guy was limping. Of course I thought he was simulating being hit by shrapnel and pretending to limp so I thought nothing of it. Wasn’t until the end of the battle that a scary realizations hit: the guy wasnt pretending to limp, he was limping cause he either broke or rolled over his ankle/foot and at the end of the fight a paramedic had to come and take him off the field. Thankfully he didn’t look majorly injured but I wonder if he’ll still be able to be in re-enactments after that

Just found your channel not too long ago. Very interesting. I have a relative who is on the German side. He said he meet you. In the early 1990's (I think) me and some friends went to Ft. Knox to watch a re enactment. It was awesome. They had an American airplane (Can't remember what kind) make a few passes over the battle. The Americans also had a quad 50 mounted on a half track up on a hill. They fired tons and tons of blanks. After the battle we could go up there and collect the 50 cal rounds.

Does the USA have localized 'burn bans' like up here in Canada? That's alot of dead grass and recipe for disaster, especially this late in season when everything is drying out and dying. BEAUTIFULLY handled by the way! Should be extinguishers in each trench. And then other precautions like fire department wetting the ground beforehand where stuff could potentially light up.

in all seriousness though, I think one way to prevent fires like this would be to have a truck come through a few minutes before the battle and spray the area down with water to reduce the likelihood of a fire breaking out. Obviously such an operation wouldn't be cheap, but considering what can happen if one of these gets out of control, I think it'd be worth it in the end, especially if it's a dry day like that one was.
