@@EragorEaglor yes and no, it shows that you can build an perfect new system from the ground up but not retrofitting an existing line. Caltrain will show that tho. It will be an example for others to do the same.

Great episode. The tragedy of Coaster selling their brand new engines is a prime example as to why federal and state owned railroads are by no means perfect, since lacl of funding, proper knowledge and foresight can lead to damaging decisions such as these.

The private companies that do exist certainly aren't perfect either, but at least they tend to be run by more people who do understand trains better than those by federal and local agencies, and are able to determine some smarter decisions since they (the private companies) aren't really run by government officials or stockholders.

NCTD is now doing all MOW work in house, the coaches have been planned for over a year now. The new locos were part of trying to get service to every 15 mins (with 1 of those being a surfliner). They want to start moving towards zero emissions equipment so pushing off 15 min service for 5-6 years isn't a big deal. They also still have 2 F59PHIs they could use if operational funding can be funding

@@harrisonofcolorado8886 Yeah, instead they are run by people only out for financial profit, which - as has been shown - most passenger services don‘t generate. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t worth keeping though. Whoever is in charge of operations needs to understand that what they are running should first of all be a reliable and usable transportation service.

The infuriating thing is that the coaster upgrades were part of the larger North Coast Corridor (NCC) project for rail, trail, and highway improvements, and just a couple of weeks earlier, they just opened new carpool lanes on the I-5. Allegedly sales tax funding shortfalls led to NCTD getting the short end of the stick (though the poor ridership recovery on the Coaster definitely has not helped matters, so far like less than 50% has returned to coaster)

@@adianchowdhury9016 Lack of ridership didn't help their case in trying to win funding over spending it on freeways. They keep getting state and fed money for rail improvements at least so the lines coming close to fully double tracked

As a Floridian, I am happy to hear that our commuter railroads are getting better by the day. Tri-Rail is going to MiamiCentral Station, and Brightline completed its construction when it was delayed in 2018. (BTW that's a lot of Golden Spikes)

To add to Brightline Orlando service: September 1st is the latest start date. From the sound of their communications, I'm guessing they'll start service earlier than that.

Nice update. I am liking the simplicity of the CPKC engines. I know to some it is bland, but at least, in my opinion, it is tasteful and combines the colors of both roads. It could have been a lot worse.

I hope that Metrolink can scoop up the Charger’s being sold, but at the same time, I think the 2 charger locomotives would probably replace the classic F59PHR’s still on a few lines. Great video

I’d say they’d replace a couple of MP36s, from what I’ve been told they are the most unreliable locomotives on the Metrolink roster.

The Coaster surplus units are better off as parts donors to Amtrak or another Charger operator. Siemens can’t even keep the units they’ve already sold to other operators in working order, and Metrolink will need extra attention from them for training, as they’re a new operator with no prior familiarity.

@@nigelrichardson4327Yeah, most unreliable before the Charger shows up at Taylor Yard. Not after. If the litany of problems Amtrak is having with the SC-44 and ALC-42 aren’t enough to clue you in that the Charger is a thoroughly mediocre locomotive, then consider that Coaster chose to keep their two F59PHIs. Considering the two SC-44s they’re selling are the ones they originally bought to replace those F59s, that should speak volumes about how unhappy they are with Siemens.

I just watched this video on August 16, and I found it informative! For one thing, it's strange that the _Coaster_ in my home state has already decided to sell two new SC-44s. On the other hand, Caltrain testing its EMU and Skyline beginning service are definitely positives! Also, CPKC's plan to run CP 2816 from Calgary to Mexico City (and to add Canadian, American, and Mexican flags to their paint scheme) is a perfectly symbolic way to emphasize their innovation: it's the first railroad to span Canada, the USA, and Mexico! Also, I like the outro music, as well. Thanks for making this!

They aren’t very reliable and 5-6 of the 15 are broken beyond repair, very disliked units in their fleet and the engineers/maintenance will be the first to tell you their horror stories with those engines

1:20 Here's some information on the stalled frieght. Symbol weight and tonnage. MCHNP 2 leading AC4400CW and an ES44C4 Trailing 2nd unit shut down due to a mechanical problem 9,505 Trailing tons 10,000 ft in length Stalled on Blair Hill due to being underpowered and tracks being wet from rain that morning (Severe Weather occurred that morning in Omaha) You Math Geniuses can probably get the amount of cars with the info I gave

I’m all for any kind of electric commuter and HSR yet I have to give credit to CalTrain for somehow making it further along than the statewide project. Most certainly up for taking Cal if I plan vacation in SF. Also if Coaster doesn’t want its Chargers then rural NY could really benefit from them. ;)

I could be wrong but I believe that the Norfolk Southern maintenance of way locomotives are rebuilt but still DC. We will soon see the CPKC paint scheme on 60 new ET 44 AC locomotives.

I think it would be best for Caltrans to acquire the two chargers and use them to replace CDTX locos 2051 and 2052 (originally built in 1991 as AMTK 501 and 502 which are nearing the end of their service life anyways). Metrolink would have to retrain their employees on new locomotive and prime mover (the chargers use Cummins prime movers while Metrolink locos use EMD)

Metrolink already services 3 prime movers, the EMD 645, 710 and Caterpillar C175-20, so I don’t think training crews to work on a pair of QSK95s would be too difficult. The case for Caltrain is strong too though,I can’t recall the last time I saw anything about 2051,52 being used at all in the last 5 years. Those 2 SC44s could supplement them or replace the F59s quicker.

I hate those CSX heritage units. They should have done the whole locomotive instead of fading from the current CSX scheme. It reminds me of a few years ago when the Jacksonville Jaguars had those ridiculous helmets that were part black and part gold.

I still can't believe Coaster is selling brand new units. The coaches I can understand, but two chargers that aren't even a few months old? Seriously?! C'mon Coaster, get it together. Oh well, it happens. If Metrolink gets them, that'd be kinda cool I guess, but that'd also probably sideline a couple of their remaining F59PHRs. Guess we'll see what happens!

They’re selling them because the Charger sucks. Their default response to any problem, even a minor one, is to give up and go into limp mode, and like all European hardware it’s a shop queen that needs more preventative maintenance and was designed with shorter time between overhaul than American locomotives. Siemens’ response has been to try and just update the software to band-aid over their weak hardware, except they can’t even do that right and break something else every time they fix a problem in their spaghetti code. The fact Coaster chose to keep their two F59PHIs instead should speak volumes about how disappointed they are with Siemens.

Because Chargers are unreliable shitboxes, and Siemens provides terrible services and support to boot. Ask any Amtrak engineer that’s had the misfortune of operating an SC-44, ALC-42, or even ACS-64. Siemens won the North American market because GE and EMD decided not to compete, not because they make good product.

Capitol Corridor can't have Mp36ph-3cs and bombardier bi levels from caltrain. Capitol Corridor and Pacific Surfliner can't order Alstom Coradia Multilevels that Metra is ordering.

The CPKC Paint scheme that was chosen beats option 4 by a landslide!! Option 4 was the WORST of the 5 options.

I don't agree. Option 4 was a nice tribute to the Deramus era red and black paint scheme on the KCS. Option 1 was my least favorite. The black angled paint doesn't work at all. Also, the CPKC lettering needs to be bigger on the long hood for all options. Frankly, I would have rather they just merged everything into CP and kept the current CP paint scheme.

@@glenbard657 Bullshit!! Option 4 didn't contribute to Anything and only had one color!! I'm glad they didn't keep the CP Scheme! Since it goes to Mexico now CANADIAN Pacific doesn't make sense to be called that anymore!! Option 1 is creative by comparison!
