Worst 4k Release? Jaws 3 4k Review | Maybe it is Better Than You Think!

WOW! If I could get everyone to watch 1 of my videos it would be the one explaining WHY MOST 4k REVIEWS ARE WRONG! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWGoaIupa86Ansk BECAUSE wow wow wow... 4k restoration DOES NOT MEAN MAGICAL PERFECTION lol!! for JAWS 3, Id be shocked if this whole movie was AI restored... I dont see that when I watch it...understand, to only AI resotre it, theyd have just taken some existing digital copy of the film and just AI upscaled it and the actual film would have never been touched - if that was the case, youd likely see waaaaaay more AI issues than some fleeting seconds in the distant background of the the movie that you have to pause it and walk up to your tv to see....I think a lot of people have a wrong idea about what is happening with restorations, how they work, and why things can come out they way they do... having something restored to 4k does not mean PERFECTION for a myriad of reasons BUT it will probably still mean that it is the best it can ever get! there will be exceptions to that, but 99% of the time, no....

I think honestly this is the best jaws 3 has looked honestly. The outdoor scenes looked great. The 3D didn’t look great but it’s never going to. Honestly not sure what people expected. I am happy with this release great looking steelbook too. What cracks me up is people canceling orders without even seeing this themselves. The only injustice I see is the fact there is no slipcover for this release! lol bummer or for jaws 4.

@@AVAPopCulture last year I cancelled True Lies and also Once Upon time-in West because .....really whats the point 🤔 . I just rather stick to the DVD 📀 and Bluray. One exception that would make me reconsider is if say they added an amazing Atmos mix utilising height speaker channels. Otherwise film grain, doesn't bother me too much.

"take what you can get" is crazy when youre paying potentially 30-35 bucks for one movie. the whole point of 4k is that it will be the best it will ever look. for it to look less than great betrays the entire premise. if we were all just taking what we could get we'd just be buying everything on on dvd. and tbh regardless of how good this release looks im unfortunately going to have to pass because supporting ai in film restoration is the last thing i want to do. it is not something that should be acceptable

usually what i see people complain about the 80s 3d movies being converted to 4k : since the filmstrip has both angles printed onto the same frame they're given less space to scan/blow up leading to less flexibility when upscaling

Correct! What’s left is just as much resolution as 16mm so there’s very limited detail to work with for a clean 4K restoration.

Not a fan of ai but people seem to forget how bad some early Blu-ray’s look on a 4k tv take what you can get these constant complainers will cause more knee jerk reactions from restorers. Great video very informative

Just another GREAT analysis my brother - I’ll be watching this one for some of the things you’re talking about…but I’m also probably going to watch in 3D as it was originally released. I do still have a separate 3D capable projector with active glasses so I’m actually probably more excited to watch it at home in 3D even more so than 4k - but I’ll watch both ways 😉

I'm sure Universal didn't go to the lengths they did with Jaws restoration, but the process they used to restore it. Is fascinating and it's a great look on what they did to clean up the damaged negative and made a new print as well a copy of the restored version. Maybe some of the same process was used for Jaws 3 . I have a very good copy i downloaded years ago I'll stick with that. We're in a era where they are nearly ruining films with AI 4k copies.

JAWS 3 is such a guilty pleasure that I love to watch.😃 It brings back such fun childhood memories from when it was released in theaters. As an adult watching it, yeah, I totally get the criticism. It really was a brilliant idea that’s different from parts 1 & 2 but then they dropped the ball. Could you imagine if this had the same tones as the first two films? Studio interference always ruins things. Anyway, the only thing I’m not happy about with this release is that artwork. Why would they put an image on the cover that’s not from the movie?

Have not seen this 4k yet, but on the look of the movie the 3D process has two main effects: - To capture both right/left image on a single strip of film Arrivision addopts a lens/mirrors system to make these side by side images being captured on the up/down half part of a 35 mil. film strip. That naturally causes distortion specially on the edges of the image. That's why in some scenes of the previous editions you can see some blue/yellow ghosting on the objects and lack of focus on the sides of the images. AI can possibly help here reducing this ghosting. - By using half of the 35 mil. film strip for each image you have a lower resolution/larger grain structure. When the movie is released in 2D you have to select one of the images (the left or the right eye image) and it will have lower resolution (half) than a full 35 mil. image. That's why it will never look great on 4K, but a fresh 4K scan should be done as a starting point (so the original source will look as good as possible), then some AI to reduce the edge ghosting could be good (if done carefully). The doubt here is if Universal did a new 4k scan or if they simply upscaled with AI a lower resolution scan.

I explained the whole filming process in the video...and I don't believe they just used AI to upscale some existing digital version of the film - there'd likely be a whole lot more issues than a few fleeting seconds in distant background shots if they did...maybe I'm wrong but there is too much in the film that looks filmic rather than digital AI

It is just that being shot in 3D per se does not explain some of the pop out appearance of some shots like the one you pointed with Kay and Mike talking during the repairs scene (as the 2D version only uses one of the "eyes" image - a standard, if lower quality, 2D image) - there, I believe, could indicate some AI contrast/edge enhancement may have been used for the hole picture . As Universal is not clear on the source I'm not so sure they did a new UHD scan or if the sharpness is pure AI enhancement /upscaling. Hope one day Shout Factory or Arrow will be able to rerelease these sequels and we'll have better information on the source they might use.

@@danbeck5051 but being shot in 3d and then having the film restored to 4k does account for that type of 3d pop... if you watch the 4k review I did on Ghostbusters, it explains partially why that is...the shot I went over, the two actors were way in the foreground and in hard focus (while still using the dual lens method of 3d filming) and the background was soft focus...those things, combined with the increase in resolution, cause a harder and more defined outline of the actors... I point to the shot before where they are less in the foreground hard focus and you dont see the 3d pop as bad...I dont think Universal will give over their titles like Jaws to Arrow etc and what would be SF or Arrow's benfit? Most people seem to only want to watch 4ks to see if they can pause them and find something to be unhappy about lol

@@AVAPopCulture Not sure Arrow or SF would be able to do better with Jaws 3-D, but a fresh 4k scan with more careful cleaning/AI would be a good start (and have the HD 3-D version newly restored with a better scan and proper alignment). But I’m sure they’d do much better with Jaws The Revenge releasing the film with the theatrical ending as most people have been wanting and without the audio issues/changes of the Atmos remaster.

I think the reason that Ai was used for this particular 4K restoration is that they tried to fix what issues were in the OCN. The OCN almost looked kind of bad on Blu-ray because it was the first movie to utilize 3D technology which was new at the time. I’m no cinematography expert but what I think they had done was use 2 separate cameras (left and right) and put each separate film to the left camera and the right camera running on film at the same time and merged with the final negative. Whether or not that’s how they filmed it, I’m not entirely sure. Correct me if I’m wrong. The OCN itself looked rough and that they tried to use Ai upscaling to try to make it look better than previously.

Yeah, I was kind of hoping how some people on KZbin do stuff better than the actual films. Like the person who made the Irishman looked a thousand times better than the actual movie. They need to hire that guy. I just saw recently. I think it was the first Jaws. They recut it with actual footage of giant. @gameoverwehaveeverypixelco1258 you have to understand how 4k restoration works...no, 4k does not mean archival quality...there are whole separate categories for archival quality and it is called a Digital Cinema Distribution Master or DCDM and it is purely for archiving in the highest quality and not for play on any media... AI cannot restore a film from the print...it has to be scanned in and restored to 4k...simple upscaling is only going to work if it is already digital...this film looks as those it was restored properly from the print and then once it was delivered to digital, someone authorized AI to try to gain detail in some of the out of focus background shots...you will never know this if you don't pause the movie and get up next to your screen and look for it...

DPX files retain as much density and luma values as close to the original camera RAW files or color negatives. DCPs or DCDM are just made for distribution and have lower bitrates than their Digital Intermediate counterparts limited to a smaller color space than HDR but larger than Rec709. Films Archive Masters can vary in resolution depending on their film scanning or mastering. Just my two cents, cool Steelbook btw.

@murdlok you may be confusing encoding/exporting format DCDM means "Digital Cinema Distribution Master" and references the delivery of the whole film, whereas DPX is the format you may encode/export the film in for a DCDM though DPX is often used more for digital intermediates...below is the portion from my contract kn "deliverables" Digital Cinema Distribution Master or DCDM An uncompressed source format for future remastering or localization of the film. It usually stores media data in uncompressed and unencrypted form. DCDM consists of a sequence of 16bit TIFF files for every frame, together with 5.1 sound files and PNG sequence for the subtitles. USAGE: It’s an archiving master format, which is not build to play the media, it is purely made for archiving purposes only. With DCDM master you will have the possibility to create the best quality masters even after many years and using the technologies of the future. It is our recommendation that you would put it in your budget to have a DCDM. Better safe than sorry. SOUND: 5.1 (+ separate tracks (dialog, Music & Effects, dubbing), if there are any) SIZE: DCDM can range anywhere between 2 TB and 15 TB, depending on the original footage resolution.

Not every film is meant to be seen in 4k, not every movie is filmed in 4k..99.999% of the time FX heavy movies are filmed in 2k tops. The 4 Star Wars films that were actually filmed on film were 2k and, its done so to help the FX. There are zero native 4k versions of any of the Star Wars films they are all 4k upscale from the 1080p blu-ray image not the 2k negative. Nobody ever seems to mention that maybe, just maybe some of these films were NEVER meant to be seen in 4k. Besides Jaws 3D being shot in 3D I highly doubt it was using the highest quality to begin with. These things that super stick out, highly likely do so because it wasn't meant to ever be a 4k image. Everyone just wants to sadly jump on and cry AI AI, AI not hmmm maybe it isn't meant to be 4k

@@lutherheggs451 you're right about wanting to yell AI or other buzzwords lol...but anything filmed with 35mm film has the resolution capability of 4-6k (that's what 4k restorations are doing, bringing up the resolution of original film -that's also why the ones that can use the original print look better than one that had to use an interpositive or inter-negative or a "film out" - BUT those old films shot on 35mm were delivered to theaters in 2k film out cinema packages and that helped conceal and blend in fx and imprefections etc...when you increase the resolution to the best possible, it can highlight those things that were not supposed to stand out or be seen!!!

Since they released a 3D version and an IMAX version of the original JAWS last year in theaters, I hope a new edition, possibly including the 3D conversion as an option, could be released. On the regular feature I don`t believe many improvements can be done to the image (they already had it restored to 8K, which was used for the 4K release), but on the sound they could try to make a new Dolby Atmos version that is closer to the original sound effects (and from better elements such as the music score that was restored for the soundtrack release of 2015 and sounds much better than previous versions - for example using the right musical take for the "We're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat" sequence which the previous Dolby version had to use a different take due to damaged elements of the track, but that was restored for the 2015 soundtrack release).

Final destination has a pair with the Blu-ray and piranha DD supposed to be but is not. Just put in the Jaws 3 Blu-ray steel and there is an option to play in 3D but tv needs to be capable

The theatrical release of Jaws 3D didn't look all that great from the git go and besides, it's a terrible movie anyway, whether if it has AI or not. Personally, I wouldn't pay a penny for Jaws 3D, lest paying almost $30.00 for it! I don't buy anything just because it's in 4K. I'm very selective of the movies that I buy.

After watching this video, I decided to sit and down and watch Jaws 3 again, simply because I hadn't seen it for a very, very long time. That's 90 minutes of my life I'm never going to get back again. As a completist, I had to have both Jaws 3 and Jaws The Revenge, but the reality is, only the first two are actually worth having. Watching 3 last night I was surprised to see that it's even worse than I remembered it being. It really is a piece of sh*t. It reminds me of a bad tv movie. I'm sorry to say that there's absolutely nothing I like about it. The shark looks even more fake than it ever did, the 'special' effects are anything but, the score is terrible and the cast are boring. Hardly any action. Hardly any gore. Absolutely no suspense. The scene where the captured 'baby' shark is walked around the 'petting' pool before dying is excruciatingly bad and reminds me of a similar scene in Irwin Allen's "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" movie where Peter Lorre does something similar with a Hammerhead shark. The shark looks exactly what it is, a fibreglass and rubber prop. Maybe fibreglass and rubber can die of shame? How did the stereotypical Brit big game hunter end up in the 'mama' sharks mouth? One minute his rope comes loose(?) and the next he's down the sharks throat. Was a scene cut? And don't even get me started on the bendy rubber shark that 's trying to get into the control room. WTF is that?! It looks like a kids toy! Will I get the film in 4K? Absolutely not. It looks sh*t enough in 1080p. Why would I want to see it looking even more sh*t? "Jaws The Revenge" is one hell of a dumb movie, but at least looks pretty decent, and it does have Lorraine Garry and a picture of Roy Scheider (who had the good sense to keep well away from it).
