A wild fact is that enemy AI is calculated by a GBA emulator on the disc. You are playing a gamecube game while the enemies are playing a GBA game. It was supposedly a temporary solution that became the permanent solution due to time constraints.

Honestly, the whole "tying your enemy down to keep them down" thing can work if done properly. Because Ultimate Spider-Man handled combat that way. Enemies wouldn't stay down, but when you take away a set amount of health, they'll collapse for about 5-10 seconds, at which point you have to tie them down with webs. If you don't, they'll get back up and keep attacking. But that didn't require a long animation. It just required Spidey shooting webs at them for about half a second. I didn't really like that game, but that was more because I didn't like the dodge mechanic more than the way you keep enemies down.

All the god of war games before 2018, and most of the Devil May Cry games, had fixed camera angles, without tank controls. So no, it’s not the only way it works. This is just a horrible example of it.

Man... I don't know if I could really call ET for the 2600 "lazy." The single guy who made it only had like six weeks to design and make the damn thing, for contrast the previous two games he made combined took a year. He tried to do it for a challenge, but it didn't pan out. Blame Atari for wanting the game out by that Christmas and needing months to make something like 4 million carts (even though there weren't that many systems sold)
