I can’t stand dvd/Blu-ray cases with sleeve/slip covers where you have to pull the disc out. The last thing I want to do is handle the disc in a way where I smudge it with my fingers or risk damaging it. Have you seen the Back to the Future trilogy Blu-ray set where the disc were held in in such a way that they actually included instructions on how to remove theme
@MrCoat4 жыл бұрын
lol, I have that same Ninja Turtles set. Great list! One DVD packaging that has long bothered me is the one for WALL-E. Instead of a standard case, Disney decided to just give it a thin sleeve to hold the discs in. It's so weird having it on the shelf next to normal looking DVDs.
@CinephileStudios4 жыл бұрын
I remember that, their “Eco-Friendly” set, just as Disney was still releasing every other movie they ever made in plastic sets (including Wall-E on Blu-Ray). I don’t even understand that. Isn’t the issue with plastic that it can be wasteful for one time use? DVD cases should be used forever in theory, so I wouldn’t think that plastic would be nearly as destructive to the planet as, say, water bottles.

@@CinephileStudios The first season of the Battlestar Galatica reboot had godawful packaging that made the discs a pain in the ass to remove without accidentally damaging them. Great video! Thank you for mentioning the Warner Bros snap cases. My dad used to have quite a few of those and I always thought that that was how everyone did early DVDs back in the day, but I guess not!
@LuckyPunkProd4 жыл бұрын
Those snap cases that WB and New Line used made the films stick out on the shelf, and the snapper sometimes snags the film next to it as you take it off. Never was a fan of those cases, even back then. On another note, another bad case to mention is the 25th anniversary Back to the Future trilogy set where they put in instructions on how to take out each disc, since the button they used to hold the discs in place was more difficult to deal with.

My copy of the Spider-Man trilogy comes in a fold-out thing with the discs in sleeves. I’ve also noticed how studios are using larger cases that can fit up to 20 discs, but at the cost of said discs overlapping. I recently bought a reissue of the Rocky and Bullwinkle complete series with that packaging, and while I’ve not experienced any issues with the discs, getting to them isn’t easy; the overlapping issue also threatens the season two discs (four flipper discs). FWIW, Paramount did recently rerelease both Ten Commandments films in a simpler, more effective digibook.

While editing this I found that they released it again with the same features 🙄 but in hindsight, I still paid less for my current set than the Amazon listed price for the 2020 set. THAT’S how cheap that set is. Nobody wanted to keep it.

The most annoying packaging for a set of multiple movies that I ever bought was the very first Blu-ray collection of all 4 Hunger Games titles. The discs were housed in a fold-out plastic tray that would slide out from a thick cardboard casing. This system looked great and seemed very protective. HOWEVER, the fold-out tray was designed to slide out from the bottom of the cardboard casing and not the side, and there was NOTHING holding the tray up in the casing. This caused the tray to fall out from under the outer shell every single time it was in a vertical position and not sitting on a shelf. This meant that I always had to either hold it awkwardly from the bottom or use two hands whenever moving/holding it. Terrible design flaw I'm baffled made it through the manufacturing process.

The whole time I was watching this I kept thinking of my Ten Commandments box set, thinking "He probably won't have that one." Surprise! No surprise, however, that it was your most hated one. I bought mine used and, while it hasn't fallen apart as much as yours has, the prongs are kind of soft and get mashed or broken and don't want to hold the discs. To make matters worse the Blu-ray discs containing the '56 version were defective. I saw no signs of scratches but the discs lock in various places, including the parting of the Red Sea (or, rather, the sea swallowing the Egyptian charioteers)! Thankfully the bonus disc with the '23 version was fine, really kind of the whole reason to get this set. Of course now there is a new set with both films in more standard packaging, finally. I recently bought the '56 version in a stand-alone set. The disc faces don't match the ones in the box set, though.

The Guillermo Del Toro set reminds me a lot of a Hellraiser Box set with four discs that opened up just like that. But instead of having the discs go into the side of the cardboard they where put on top of it. Very cool and convenient packaging. The worst Box I've ever bought is Justice League TAS on DVD. Everything was so floppy and the holder didn't really hold the discs but were just there for them to rest. Which meant that everything was lose as soon as you opened the case.

Surprised you didn't mention the box sets that have glossy cardboard pouches for the discs - Stargate SG-1 set in the 10 season box was the worst - folding out pouches with glossy inserts that scratched the discs and you have to manhandle the discs (put finger prints all over them) to get them out. I ended up putting the 50 discs on to a spindle so they didn't get scratched whenever I watched them. The same with the more recent Alfred Hitchcock 4K classics collection. Glossy pouches made like the page of a book and the ONLY wat to get them out was to put your fingers all over the discs. Craziness.

Omg I just got one of the WB dvds like that brand new dvd but during shipping the disc clip got completely destroyed. And removing the tape slightly damaged the cover :( luckily I have a 3d printer and was able to break off the old clip completely and mouth a new printed clip and save the case. The stuff I dislike is when company’s put a very cheap feeling outer box for box sets like the 5 movie Blu-ray version of the resident evil movies, it’s not even worth saving the outer box at that point. Then you got the Mr robot complete series Blu-ray set which is probably the worst idea I’ve ever seen. I believe the new saw 10 movie Blu-ray set is the same too

Yeah, I get around shoddy packaging by searching for earlier releases with normal blu-ray cases and transferring the disks from newer releases into the older, yet better packaging. It's great for making combo packs. I once had the first ten star trek movies in separate blu-ray and dvd collections, then I carefully bought each separate blu ray release and used extra cases to turn the entire collection into a combo set. I've done the same thing for my Halloween, Friday the 13th, Star Wars, Spider Man Trilogy, X-Men, Alien, and Child's Play collections. Though to be fair, the X-Men and Star Wars sets already had good packaging, it was just nicer to have each film from those collections in individual cases. I also got the re-release of the Ten Commandments 6 Disk set, bought the smaller normal sized two disk release and used a six disk case to include all the disks, and FYI the re-release did not come with a separate case

Mill Creek is a blessing and curse. One one hand they release a lot of obscure stuff (especially westeran animation from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s) that might not see release otherwise for really cheap. On the other the actual quality of their packaging is complete shit because they basically target straight-to-bargain-bin pricing with their products. I'm also surprised you'd did list any of CBSs horrendous series sets of old shows that are just stacks and stacks of discs inside an oversized clamshell on here.
