I agree that Rhoda & Timin are uninspired, but of all the things Rhoda could do going Voltron isn't the worst. Tapping down opponents creatures enables the aggro gameplan in colors that don't normally go Voltron. This is exactly what an Azorios Voltron commander deck should be.

Strefan's ability is good. This isn't a 'cheat Necropolis Regent into play card', this is a 'play a vampire every turn for 0 mana' card. It's got great efficiency.

@@noahz42 Not necessarily. It’s more that non-once per turn effects have an unhealthy habit of breaking the game in half and fueling tons of OTKs and FTKs, so it’s just not worth the risk. I’m glad that MTG is picking up on the fact that infinite loops are generally very unpleasant to play against, but it’s arguably too late for that considering their unwillingness to ban all of the many, MANY cards that have fueled those loops over the years. Oh well, that’s what house rules are for I guess.

The main issue with Strefan is, that there is just this one rediculously strong vampire tribal commander that will always outshine him in every way. More colours, better effect, broken eminence ability. Vampire tribal at this point is Edgar and nothing below if you wanna build it strong.

Original Olivia is still pretty strong if you want to go with a two-color Vampire deck, but yea eminence Edgar will just forever outshine any other Legendary Vampire.

@@XCodes Well the main problem is, that Edgars Eminence ability can not be countered (except for a few stifles but no one would use them there) and hes basically providing his whole deck a super strong tempo upgrade, hes fast rebuilding if he has the resources and you dont need a lot of synergie in your tribal, you can use the general support like Door of Destiny, Vanquishers Banner and what not, there is enough for a go pretty wide strategy. Normaly when you sit at a table, you wait and see which player gets ahead and who you need to answear or control. With Edgar you always know he will be a problem because his strategy is agressive and he will out tempo even other agressive decks, so its answearing a lot or die.

I find it particularly hilarious that Odric is white-red. At least with the new Katilda and Dorothea, you could make the argument that they're not made to be commanders of their own, but rather support for Millicent. But Odric, with his white-red color identity, can't even *go* into the decks that would help him use the Blood tokens he creates, like the aforementioned Strefan and Anje. What the actual fuck are you even supposed to do with him? If Strefan and Odric partnered with each other, maybe we could've been onto something.

Odric should have said when he ETBs or attacks spawn a blood token. Sac a blood token creatures you control gain one of those abilities he cares about. Then he'd be a strong, but not broken, commander who would work kind of like his other cards, and gives you another blood token pay off.

Easy answer to the why use Strefan when theres Edgar EDGAR COSTS 100$ that’s about all anyone needs to hear to settle for Rakdos vampire(or orzohv) plus with new Olivia and strefan you can make a deck around cheating out large cost vampires(tho honestly Olivia>strefan any day in that kind of deck) obvi unless you actually played and picked up Edgar before he went up in price

@@mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299 Sadly won't work as well for me because i already have two other decks that focus on life gain and don't want a third(i'm stretching my cards thin as it is), and i rather have a commander that cares about the tribe be the commander of a tribal then just someone who just happens to be of t he same tribe but doesn't care as much of the tribal. Is that restricting me a lot? Absolutely, would it be easier to make a liccia then just build three vampire tribals with edgar orzohv tokens, olivia recursion and anje blood madness? I like collecting the precons, but I can't get the older ones because I don't want to sell my kidneys just to afford some of them. It's ridiculous.

It almost feels like Anje and Strefan were designed with Partner, then they decided to remove Partner for some reason. I mean, their effects work well together. Strefan gives a blood token for each player that took damage, she sacrifices blood tokens to deal damage to everyone. And with wording, you're prevented from going infinite. At the same time, when Strefan attacks, you can sacrifice two blood tokens to cheat in a vampire... Which would trigger Anje's effect to get you a blood token. Just as an added way of getting more tokens for the previous ability. So yeah, its almost like they were designed as Partner creatures, but they changed their mind at some point and didn't fix them. Or that they had a great combo effect and a good combo effect, but for some reason decided to split them up between two different creatures. Either way, they would work pretty well together.

Odric is clearly a card that was designed after the story for the character was written. Yes, it's cool that he's a Vampire now, but the design process was literally "Current vampire mechanic we're pushing + Odric's keyword soup" without any thought for how or if the card would function.

I get the whole thing about Edgar Markov being the popular commander, but he's also quite a chunk of change for just him. Just feels weird having him brought up each time when in comparison to players building a new deck.

It’s literally just because he’s the only viable mardu commander for vamps. Any other commander is inferior simply by virtue of them not being able to have either white or red vampires in their decks. They should have thrown partner on this sets Olivia and Edgar cards and they’d have been infinitely better.

@@planetfucksquad I would agree on his power and that the idea of Olivia and Edgar having partner would be fantastic, for me my comment comes from the idea that "Sure they aren't the most competitive, but they aren't unplayable or bad for starting". Edgar is super powerful and the best vampire commander ever, but I don't think that means that you just *have* to play him. Anje and Strefan have their merits the same way that the Olivia cards do.

I just think the fault lies with wotc for why Edgar is always brought up when talking about vampire commanders. He’s the only one that isn’t sacrificing utility when you play him. They know that and they could have fixed it this set. Shit they could have made Odric RW with activated B or something and made a lot of people very happy. They didn’t so the Edgar train will keep rolling. It isn’t fair, but *should* be easily fixable

Yeah...but they could have also reprinted the original Markov, instead of making a downshifted version. The secret for the original Markov is that "Vampire Tribal" on it's own is only kinda good...and he brings so much value to a Vampire Tribal deck that you almost don't need to cast him at all in order to win. (it's the "emminence" ability that makes him broken....the rest of the card is fine) These new commanders are not a good "Budget" or "Fixed" options- they don't have access to all 3 tribe colors, and they have so much built in nerf attached to them they wont even make the 99 of my other Vampire decks....they are genuinely that bad. I feel like these new cards even just ruin the image for some of the characters they portray, for as much as I care about the backstory- in a lot of the artwork their expressions cry out "I know, I'm sorry...this card is awful, somebody please just shoot me.". I'm not the least bit surprised to see them dominating this episode of the Golden Toilet.

I guess the main reason it's weird to me is that no other commander was brought up for any of the other entries. None were brought up for Azorius or Boros or even mono white. It felt odd to have only one better option shown

Just finished my Odric Boros Reanimator deck yesterday. The blood can be used to quickly draw and get things into the yard, and your win cons are either big creatures, combining off with Krark Clan + Displacer + Odric (Infinite mana, draw your deck, comet storm). It's really fun, and won a few games so far!

what i don't like is that they didn't give the new Edgar nor Olivia eminence. This new Edgar could literally give a blood token whenever you cast a vampire spell and then Olivia could be Eminence your vampire spells cost one less to cast. Or i don't know, whenever you sacrifice a blood token put a +1/+1 counter on a vampire you control.

Despite WoTC's shift towards supporting Commander more, not every legendary creature is designed to be a commander. Odric especially is an example of that, he was never designed to be a Commander but rather to fulfil the needs of the set for limited/constructed.

Better and more thematic Odric: Every time an opponent’s creature dies, make a blood token. Sacrifice two blood tokens: put a keyword counter on a creature you control from among these keywords: [list of Odric keywords]. You can only choose a keyword from among those that haven’t been chosen. Hunts down vampires while using their blood to boost himself and his allies. Admittedly this would probably cause his cost to go up but still far less disappointing. Oh and would also force him into a precon as keyword counters was an Ikoria mechanic and one time use block mechanics can only really seem to be in supplemental products. But again, still far less disappointing

I don't understand why new Odric is Hated so much. It's actually a pretty powerful commander. When Volo, Guide to monsters came out, Nobody called a deck built around him "Miscellaneous creature type tribal", But a deck built around Odric is "Miscellaneous Keyword tribal"? An Odric deck can get an absurd amount of value, enough that I think it's in the same league as Osigr. Here's a list of cards that synergize with Odric, Alhammarret's Archive, Blinkmoth urn, Inspiring statuary, Krark-clan Ironworks, Sword of vengeance, Conjurer's closet, Anointed procession, Outlaw's merriment, Teleportation circle, Iroas, God of Victory, Jor kadeen, The prevailer, Reckless fireweaver, Surly badgersaur, Hellkite tyrant, Hellkite igniter, Aurelia, exemplar of justice, Anger, Conspiracy theorist, and Akroma, angel of Ixidor. Odric, Blood cursed, isn't a bad design in my opinion, I don't know why I'm the only one who likes this card.

I'm actually building a Rhoda/Timin deck, and one of the best cards in it is Willbreaker, because each combat I get to essentially take somebody's creature. Also, two other great cards are Cowardice and Dismiss into dream

I actually like the new Anje quite a bit. No, she isn't very powerful, but the mechanics that Vampires have been most known for are draining your opponent's life, aristocrats, getting effects from opponents losing life, madness and recently blood tokens. Anje supports all of these themes, giving you great flexibility in building a mechanically flavorful vampire deck. I'm currently putting together a group slug deck where her second ability is used to break parity.

I guess the one thing to the new Edgar is that you don't have to pay the commander costs unless it gets exiled so it's a bit easier to do more with your commander and maybe using board wipes more often. knowing you'd have a board state next turn.

Fair enough for Strefan, I'm just happy that we have another option for Vampire tribal (even if there isn't white). I was so disappointed with Edgar though..mainly because there isn't red. I understand that it wasn't designed for commander..or at least not an alternative for vampire tribal in commander. I believe if he was made for commander, the coffin would've made a vampire token on each upkeep, not only yours.

I’m super excited about Rhoda and Timin. I’m building them as a tapping deck with a side of spirit tribal, which means I get to play loads of cool Innistrad spirits with amazing art. I’m also building Katilda, she seems like a cool take on Voltron but without actually having to re-equip or re-enchant her if she dies. She feels like a mono-white Tuvasa, but with the spirit tribal angle too.

The reason why Strefan over Edgar Markov is because Edgar cost $100+. Definitely not quarter friendly.... Strepfen is a decent commander for vamps, and is sure to be budget friendly. Untill Edgar gets a significant reprint many many folks will be looking at guys like Strefan to helm their vamp tribal decks.

I don't like how they limited Strefan to only being able to utilize Blood tokens with his ability when they had Eloise able to utilize any token in just the last set. It unnecessarily narrows Strefan's versatility and hugely narrows down the card pool that synergizes well with him because who knows when the next time we get Blood token support will be?

Holy crap, I disgree with so much of what you're saying in this video. let me just say that as someone that is currently interrested in building a vampire tribal commander deck, Edgar Markov is probably my last choice for commander. He's a really boring commander. All he does is just sit in the command zone and make you vampire tokens without giving your opponents a chance to prevent it. If I'm gonna build a commander deck, I would so much rather build something special that not everyone are familiar with. There are tons of reasons to build a vampire deck around someone else than Edgar Markov (for starters, he's really really expensive) Although I don't know if I would go with vampire tribal, I would rather build a commander deck around Edgar, Charmed Groom than Edgar Markov. He's nowhere near as powerfull, but he's a LOT more interresting to build around. That goes for a lot of the cards on this list actually. Underwhelming commanders usually create opportunities for really interresting decks

So I really like vampires, and I have an Edgar Markov deck, and it's true he is very very strong. But there are a few reasons why you might want to build around another vampire commander. The price tag, hatred of the eminence ability, want a less powerful commander because you play at a lower level table, there are more cool vampires then their is space for vampires in one deck (reason I'm building another), or maybe you are just tired of seeing Edgar. I also think you are selling Anje a bit short. She is actually kind of cool as a vampire commander because there are a lot of vampires that want your opponents to lose life, a lot that trigger on life gain and quite a few with madness, and it's super neat, imo, that Anje enables all of them.

What kept both innistrad below broken power level is just one sentence - this ability triggers only once each turn. Also, many of those commanders just need Helm of the Host to make some impact. Yeeeeeeah, strong commander with this would be utterly busted, but yeah.

The fact that Odric can be effectively a -1 in card advantage, and that blood tokens effectively do NOTHING on White/Red (because y'know, unlike black or blue your cards only do something on the field, not in every single zone of the game), it makes me wonder: they didn't give him first strike or even haste because the text box was too full?

I wasn’t surprised Odric was bottom, but you didn’t even recommend cards for his deck. 🤣 Also If you allowed that vampire to put any creature in hand on the field, he’d need a cmc cap on what he could get. Dropping a 13/13 emerkal seems a bit much.

I can't help but feel Odric is being slept on so hard. You can get up to 12 artifacts for 3 mana. I'm not sure what more you can ask for in a unique commander, considering boros sacrifice artifacts isn't exactly a common archetype. Boros usually focuses on equipment or beatdown. In my eyes, the thing that you want in the command zone is a combo piece that wins you games, and that's exactly what Odric is. He doesn't need extra abilities or clauses removed. Even if you just have a few of these abilities in play, you can get more blood tokens than most other generators, even for other kinds of artifact tokens. So many players are quick to point out that you get no payoff if you have no boardstate like that isn't true of hundreds of other commanders, including high tier commanders. Odric is essentially just a sorcery on a stick that says it can be your commander, which is another aspect shared by many beloved commanders. He just needs to be built in the right way to get the right payoff.

I think Katilda is a little underrated. I agree that mono white has several disadvantages in deck building and sure, maybe it’s a bit unoriginal. However, white enchantments on its own can be very powerful, and a 3 drop is not too hard to recast once or twice in a commander game. I think it has potential.

Some quick thoughts on making Timin/Rhoda a better pair: make them both cost 1 less, give Rhoda trample (look at that frickin' sword, how in the hell does that thing not have trample), make Timin give Rhoda some sort of protection. I'm still 100% going to build them though.

Odric redesign suggestion to make him at least somewhat flexible without jumping the shark. 3/3 for 1RW First Strike (his classically associated ability), Lifelink (or some other arbitrary ability from the list that pairs well with First Strike in Boros) When Odric enters the battlefield OR attacks (or "deals combat damage" instead of attacks) create X Blood tokens, where X is the greatest number of abilities shared from among Flying, First Strike, Double Strike, Deathtouch, Haste, Hexproof, Indestructible, Lifelink, Menace, Reach, Trample and Vigilance found among creatures you control. Also maybe bump him up to Mythic to justify putting all that on a 3/3 for 3 (otherwise maybe cut back on the second innate ability). He gives you something on his own, he gives you something when he swings or connects and you have the flexibility to go tribal whatever ability from his list you want. Odric always did like having the boys in tow, this is no different in that respect. Still Odric, but with something of an unhealthy affinity for cherry juice. Sidenote: Anybody else find the Deathtouch inclusion a bit odd for a Boros creature? Just my 2 cents to add to the piggy jar. P.S: Still wouldn't play him myself as the go wide and go face types of decks are not really my thing, but at least there are interactions to play around with. The combat damage trigger (if we go with that one) has a positive interaction with Double Strike and multiple combat phases (which is not at all unusual for Boros), some interaction with the white flicker effects, etc. Find a use for all those Blood tokens and you may actually have a deck here.

Two observations: 1. Edgar Markov is banned in Commander. Anyone who plays this commander in casual is a douche and deserves to lose their friends. 2. Just because a creature is legendary that does not mean it was intended to be a Commander.

Strefan isn't completely awful. cheating out big stuff with decent ETB effects early is solid. I was going to compile a list of options but a lot of the best ones are in the pre-con already. also, this is stupid and bad, but Maskwood Nexus would be funny.

I don’t like Blood tokens. My main thing is: why not make Discarding a card part of the Effect, not the Cost. Would it really be that broken if it did that? Then, if you’re hellbent and top-decking, you can pay 1 and sac a Blood token to draw a card. It’s flavorful too: if you have power, you must give up some power to use the blood for strength, but, if you’re desperate, the blood gives you greater strength. The way it is now, you MUST have a card in hand to use them.

Odric was/is, without a doubt, one of the worst commanders that WotC had printed in the last decade. In fact, I almost think I'd rather run some of the vanilla legends from the games earlier years! At least they don't tease you with POTENTIAL that you know they'll never achieve.

the ONLY use i can think of with this new Anje is in the 99 for Olivia where she cares about if you control a LEGENDARY vampire of which Anje is. And then you'd just run both because why not.

for me the problemvis that both Rhoda and Timin are too expensive in terms of mana, if they were cheaper the would be useful especially because the idea of of someone trying to avenge a loved one wille being adied by the gost of that love one is cool New Odric on the other hand is just sad, even if it lock you in mono white I would still recommend running one of his other versions if you really want Odric to be your commander

I've thought up 2 easy fixes to make interesting but not op cards for Edgar and Odric. For Edgar, everytime the front face etbs or is flipped into, steal a creature and make it a vamp for as long as it's face up. For Odric, GIVE your creatures those abilities as you create blood tokens. Not 100% on how to word it, but 1 blood token gives haste, 2 gives first strike, 3 gives reach, etc going through the abilities in worst to best order. Happy to hear everyone's thoughts

So not only did they spit in the face of Edgar Markov players, but they gave us Anje, Too Drunk where what she does doesn't matter, your paying 4 mana for a 4/5 basically..... Meanwhile Anje Falkenwrath is one of the top tier competitive commanders that makes use of a very neat mechanic. All they had to do was slap the keyword "madness" on this new version and it would at least see play.

Unpopular opinion, I love playing Boros decks, my only issue with it is that most of the commanders are oriented around combat and there's just very little variety. But even with that consideration, I would still take another combat oriented Boros commander, rather than what we got for Odric. That is just so disappointing.

I will say, I do feel like Dorothea and New Edgar (while definitely not designed for Commander) could arguably work decently well with "Commander matters" sort of cards, like the Lieutenant cards and such. Particularly Edgar. I don't think it particularly makes them "valid" or whatever, but you could do something cheeky with them, probably.

I agree most of these would be tough to build as individual commanders. And Edgar for sure needs a bigger pay off for dying. I dig the effect, but yea my 4/4 just died...and I get a "thanks for playing t-shirt" for 3 turns. Lol I do like how some of these cards would synergize with Stefan overall though. Just not how sure they all mesh in practice, looking forward to trying it soon!
