I was so confused as a teenager when my 14-year-old cousin told me all these stories about "hooking up" with guys, because where I'm from "hooking up" is 100% slang for "having sex" and nothing else. "Hooking up" never means anything but straight-up sex. My most embarrassing rejection was when my FRIENDS (this was in highschool- sophomore year) they decided to ask this boy out for me. He was decent looking and was part of the popular group. I liked him since eighth grade. He was popular, but rarely dated anyone. He was the most popular guy's friend. We talked, but since I wasn't in his group.. there was a really big gap between us. So, I told one friend this and it started a chain reaction throughout my whole friend group. They told him, and I was there standing shyly from a distance. I tried to beg them not to, because knew what would happen if they did and if I got rejected. They didn't listen.. I was left to the sidelines to see his reaction. When I turned to look, he was staring at me like I was the most disgusting human being that ever lived and that I was mostly likely a cockroach-human hybrid. He was *looking down on me.* I could have never been more mortified when he said this, "That... *thing. HER?"* My friends didn't even do anything, they just stood there. I was trying not to cry. To top it all off it happened after school and near his more popular friends. This rejection spread like wildfire. It was an outrageous backlash against me. After a couple weeks past it was still the biggest talk. When people saw me in the hallway they *laughed.* My friends didn't even apologize to me. Gosh this scarred me so bad back then. It was the worst thing to happen to me in highschool.

My worst rejection story: my friend told my crush that I liked him a few weeks before prom, cause I knew that he didn't have a date and I asked her to kind of check out how he felt before I approached him, cause she was actually friends with him and I'd been pining from afar. She said that he was kind of neutral about it, so I figured I'd take the chance. About a week after that, I went up to him before lunch and asked him to prom, but he said he already had a date. Okay, that's fine, walked away with my head held high and prepared myself to whine to my friends. I get to the lunch table with like six other girls and find out that in the last week, he'd asked all of them to go to prom with him. Knowing that I liked him. End of crush.

Probably one of the biggest cockblocks ever. Coming to my last years of High School I fell for this girl, let's just call her "Ellen" lol and being an awkward teenager I didn't know what to do or say to her so I asked one of my friends to give advice. My friend and I talked about the do's and don'ts and all those sorts of things until I finally gained the courage to tell Ellen I liked her. Me and Ellen spoke quite a bit, a little bit of flirting here and there. I finally drop the "I really like you" bomb on her and she tells me she doesn't feel the same way that I was a "good friend" and that she liked someone else but me, being an awkward teenaged boy and all, replied by saying "haha don't worry about it, it was just a dare". A week goes by and she tells her best friend about me liking her and I go to a party and he shows up. He asks me about what was going on between me and Ellen and I said it was just a dare but he then tells me she actually liked me and told me what she said out of panicking but because I said it was a dare turned her off straight away. I had a teacher who thought he had asked a girl to prom, he said it was pretty clear to him that he asked her to prom but he wasn't as straight forward as he could've been. Fast forward to prom night, he rents a limo, is in his tux, goes to knock on her door for prom and has her corsage and everything, her parents answer the door and then tell him she already went to prom with her date lol. Honestly I think prom's gotten kinda outta hand, I'm mean it's great, it's fun, but goddamn do people really need to make these big to dos and proposals for it? Anyway, I went with my friends to the prom, since I had no date and neither did most of us (one of them did). Great fun, no regrets. As for my worst rejection story, there was this guy in middle school I liked and for the longest time I just pined after him, talking to him, and sending him secret admirer letters (once I even sent him chocolates). I asked him to the school dance, and he said he couldn't go or some lame excuse like that. At the dance I saw him dancing with another girl. At this point I probably should've gotten the hint he didn't like me but I was young and stupid and in denial so I kept pursuing him. Eventually, finally I confessed over text that I was his secret admirer and I liked him and then he... never responded. No response. None whatsoever. Thanks. I guess I don't even warrant a response? Months later I found out he stupidly showed my text to some of his friends and they spread through to the whole school that I liked this guy. Fortunately no one harassed me over it and I didn't even find out until months later when likely everybody had pretty much forgotten about it but still it was really embarrassing and infuriating. I mean I suppose it was partially my fault for not taking the hint but... seriously? Anyway, that's my story.

My worst rejection story:So in 6th grade I had a huge crush on this guy(let's call him Leo). So Leo and I had been really close that year, and i thought he liked me. So I decide to write him a note. It basically said, I'm in love with you, if you want to know who I am, meet me behind the coke machine at the Valentines day dance. Well so he wouldnt know my handwriting, I had my best friend at the time, Zoey write it the day before. Well the other girl who had a crush on me(let's call her Allie) saw Zoey write the note. So the next day I put it in his locker, where he proceeded to find it 20 minutes later in class. He went up and read it out loud to the teacher because someone(me) had broken into his locker. The whole class laughs, while I have a mental breakdown in my head. At the end of the day, Allie, Leo, and me were alone in homeroom together. Allie says, "I know who wrote the note." "Who?" He asks. She whispers something and he walks out of the room. She throws the balled up note at my head and says I'll never get him. A week later, I overheard him saying that he did like me back, but Allie told him no. So, at the dance, my friends and I got her back. She was dancing with her friends, and Zoey came behind her and poured tomato juice all over Allie. Sad to say, that me and Leo never talked again

As I've gotten older I really embraced the "why not?" mentality. It's so much better to say "hey, I like you and would like to take you out sometime." and they decline and I can move on rather than pining from afar and not living my life. That's my advice to young people. Don't waste your time on just dreaming in an aspect of your life. Want to date that person? Ask them out. Want to do that thing? Try it.
