Lewis-Skelly's ridiculous straight red card is even more laughable given Gomes not only got away with kicking the ball away while on a yellow card (no different to Rice or Trossard this season..) but then he only gets a 2nd yellow for what should have been a STRAIGHT red card offence and far worse than what Lewis-Skelly did. Everyone knows what’s going on but for some reason we have to ludicrously accept that refs aren’t bias. Michael Oliver was gagging to give Arsenal a red. And VAR backed it. The same ref in the same game only gave a yellow to Gomes for a worse tackle. Hiding behind that it was a 2nd yellow. Last week, Nunez should have been given, worst case, at least a 2nd yellow but he got away with just a foul! I’m sorry but they waste time ruling out goals because the ball inadvertently hits someone’s hand and think they’ve made a great decision.

Arsenal play his other employers man city in the league and then straight after MLS also misses the 2nd leg vs Newcastle which is Olivers team. What I don't understand about the VAR in particular in this situation is: You're actually doing a better job of protecting Michael Oliver if you ask him to take a second look at that because you think it's a harsh red. If the goal is to ensure the correct call on the field is made, then have a spine and tell the ref that he made a dodgy call. If you're afraid to tell Oliver to take a second look because he's a senior official, etc then you should be excused from VAR duty since you're not using it for the intended purpose. Blindly backing him isn't going to make everyone go, "Oh well the VAR confirmed it lads, it's gotta be a red." It just makes everyone go, "Oh okay, so it's just buddies backing up their other buddy because they don't want to say he's wrong." VAR operators should be an independent entity that aren't part of PGMOL and aren't active PL officials. Full stop. The technology can't do what it's supposed to do when it's being used the way it's being used.

Thank goodness you didn't have Abbi Summers in the studio...no doubt she would have somehow justified the red card!! 😂😂 In all seriousness though, two things bothered me with Michael Oliver: 1/ He was so quick to brandish the red card, literally two seconds after the tackle, which was a nailed-on yellow . Plus VAR didn't even send him to the screen!!! 2/ Joao Gomes had been walking a tightrope most of the game, and his tackle on Timber...which was far worse than Lewis-Skelly's by the way...was only deemed worthy of a yellow!! I know all teams have their fair share of poor refereeing decisions, but there seems to be a common thread with Oliver and Arsenal which is very concerning!!

There's really two debates here: the first is whether that foul constituted "serious foul play" as described in the rules of the game, while the second is concerned with whether cynical fouls should be punished more severely. Regarding the first point, my personal opinion is that it does not meet the standard for "serious foul play" & this opinion seems to be shared by the majority of fans, ex-pros & ex-refs (in a roughly 2:1 ratio) but I accept this debate is subjective & if you truly feel that it met the standard to be deemed "serious foul play" then fair enough, you are entitled to your opinion. The second debate however is the more troubling one. Some people seem to think it would be acceptable for the ref to simply alter the rules of the game mid-match without telling anyone, which is obviously insane. Cynical fouls are punished by a yellow card, those are the rules of the game. You're welcome to debate whether they should be punished more harshly but Michael Oliver doesn't just get to decide that halfway through a game.
