The problem with these channels is they're trying to apply traditional sartorial "rules" to everyday-wear, subsequently forcing everyone to wear the same thing, not encourage people to experiment and find their own style. People strictly following these "rules" are stuck in the 2000s, are clones of each other and not having fun with fashion.

@@JamesLeung i think the other take is that those channels are trying to appeal to as many people as they can and they can't just say "it just depends on your body size and shape so wear what you like." It is much easier and effective to give hard and fast rules to get most of the population up to a baseline and then let the people figure things out for themselves as their own personal style as they go along

These channels have also been around forever and they got comfortable with whatever was the advice of the moment when they started. As much as they might have been helpful back in those days, they failed to evolve and now they just keep spewing the same advice they gave back then. Even their shouting style is bothersome and outdated.

what I hate the most about those channels like Alpha M, and channels alike, is their almost religious-like, dogmatic apporoach to fashion, annnddd their weird messages on masculinity, like, if u don´t wear your pants strictly like THIS, you dress horribly, you don´t have fashion sense, you are not "man enough", or when they say things like, "every man has to have this set of items", when BRUH, fashion is all about originality, experimentation and self expression

Now, I watch your content, Tim Dessaint's, Drew Joiners', and Harry Has'! Even though I don't have the super duper exact fashion as yours (since my wardrobe is still mostly slim fits with slowly incorporating of looser/relaxed fits) I still stay for the tips and advices since you mostly tell your audience to wear what makes ourselves comfortable and at the same time keeps the audience updated with trends.

I can't imagine any of their advice working for me at all. And I'd imagine that to be the case of the majority of men out there. If i want to get ready for a GAP or a Banana Republic lookbook photoshoot, then these advice would be prudent. For everyone else out there, understand this: the only reason they keep pushing our these sort of contents is because A) They are simply using it as a platform to segway into their sponsors contents, and B) controversial and outrageous contents drives views and engagement, satisfying the algorithms and increase earnings. I think the point that's being missed by some is that there can be value in getting comfortable with mid-tier clothing and fits before you level up and branch out. You can look a little cut and paste, or Capsule Wardrobe TM, in this phase, but it does tend to give you a nice base to build a wardrobe around. Although most or all of the items called out in these vids have been effectively styled by people in the know, the sort of people who are likely to be watching these videos are also likely to be abusing these items in their own wardrobe. To me, I think there are good points that have been missed in these vids.

Unfortunately nowadays him and that lady's channel is moreso focused on preying on men's insecurities and giving a vibe that you as a man should solely live to get women's validation so u should dress this way or get this cologne bc women like it, etc. That's NOT the right message for men to become better. Harry Has, Modest Man (Brock McGoff), Tim Dessaint and Courtney Ryan are great alternatives to check out imo, not only do they provide very valuable fashion advice, they also provide great health and wellbeing habits to keep while improving your overall appearance. The key thing is that they're not as 'in your face' and outspoken as Ashley Weston (Men's Fashioner) and Alpha M are. Like I've seen one of Ashley's videos complaining about Gilets (Bodywarmers) and I'm like seriously? If people want to wear them then they should, they're like the perfect thing to wear during Spring and Autumn, not as bulky as coats and jackets can be, but they'll keep your body warm appropriate for the temperature and they have pockets in which you can keep your keys, phone etc. Plus they're very useful to wear while driving as they allow full movement of your arms while steering. Her argument is that they look goofy and uncool but if wear them with a long sleeve shirt, dark wash jeans and boots it puts together a great robust and masculine look, especially with the sleeves rolled up. For a more casual look, they even look great with hoodies.

Gentleman's Gazette and The Chaps Guide are not trying to get you laid like Alpha M (who has a lady btw, but doesn't act like it) but they are geared to the 30-50 year olds not the 17-25 year olds. A channel like RMRS is not trying to get you to dress because you like it as a hobby, but rather tying to dress you for success in the business world.

Courtney Ryan is just a toned down, more friendly version of Ashley. She's way too basic. Dessaint on the other hand is an antithesis of Ryan. He tends to give good advice, but his style is definitely geared towards more progressive folks, thus mentioned isn't isn't practical for everyday use. Brock is also quite basic, but he' s basic done right kind of a guy. He knows what's he's preaching, and everyday, pragmatic, practical approach he upholds will works for most of the folks. The only problem is the fact that he isn't into creating fashion content anymore, so it's kinda a dead end. It's understandable. It doesn't seem that way, but he's kinda an older guy, he has a family, kids and bills--real problems to worry about. Harry would be a way to go. Basic enough to be practical, but creative enough to stand out. Not too much, but not too little either. Perfect balance...he is good.

@@mr.anti-hero4398 Yeah all good points, I get that the likes of Courtney and Brock are quite basic but at least they make things easier for men style wise, it's always great to feel confident in your clothes without having to spend lavishly. Most importantly it's timeless advice as well, they look at fashion through a long term perspective rather than just blindly following the trends. Imo, I'd say it's great to mix things up in your wardrobe, of course have the classic basics but have the more experimental clothes like your summer shirts, Christmas jumpers, graphic t-shirts etc. Graphic t-shirts always look great with jeans during the spring/summer.

I actually really like fanny packs/crossbody bags. if you already store your phone, wallet, and keys in your pants, you have the entire bag for whatever other small items you might carry throughout the day. They're usually quick release buckled, and are compact enough to be easy to store in your car, possibly even in your glove compartment if it's a small enough bag. I think they can be a fun casual accessory that has actual function. Maybe that's just because I think Kintaro Oe from "Golden Boy" is a pretty simple and casual but weirdly stylish character though.

Yeah I had to unsub from mens fashioner. Style is so subjective and everyone is different. I personally like a minimal aesthetic with no logos, classic pieces and slim jeans/pants. Others might want graphic tees, cargo shorts and follow the baggy trend. It all depends on what you like and there’s no right or wrong (most of the times). However I do respect Alpha M as an entrepreneur

"Invest in some well-fitted dark wash jeans to truly show off your individual style".... But what if that's not your individual style?! What she's saying is 'Wear what I, personally, think is stylish'. Tbh I really can't stand this woman's videos. She has ultra conservative and boring/dull taste, in general. Her idea of stylish items for men are 'henley's', button down shirts, boating shoes, 'a nice pair of chinos' etc. The usual suspects. And hey, sandals can look incredibly stylish, either elegant or funky. I think people are slowly waking up now and moving away from these dinosaurs who've been recycling the same outdated info for years.

With all of this in mind, I might have to reconsider my fashion choices. I'm convinced don't have a personal style at all. The problem is I don't know which direction to take to solve this problem. My only options are: a) Continue the AlphaM/TMF/Pinterest way of menswear, but be seen as boring and basic. Nobody likes boring and basic. The StraightTok vs AltTok era made me feel some type of way. b) Find out what is not considered "boring and basic", but then I would feel like a poser since I'm portraying something I'm not - I'm not at all a creative, never involved in any -core/aesthetic communities, etc. And on top of that end up being out of touch. I'm only 23 yet I don't relate with the way GenZ-ers express themselves on social media. c) Get inspiration from my favorite rappers, but get accused of glazing/cultural appropriation/racism. Everyone tells me to "be myself" but I don't know who I am. Is it over for me?

Great video, loved hearing your takes. I think the common thread with these channels is that they're all older millennials who are generally stuck with, what are now, outdated fashion views. To be fair, I'm an older millennial myself, and 10-15 years ago would 100% agree with everything they're saying. Heck, I used to watch these channels when they started and they don't seem to have changed their view whatsoever, which is a bit weird imo for folks who are dealing with something so fluid as fashion 🤷🏻‍♀ Really appreciated your gentle humane takes that clothing should just be something people enjoy vs the message of these channels which is mainly "because otherwise you're childish" or "that's just how it should be". Chef's kisses all the way x

I currently live in South Korea and also follow the first guy showed! The oversized/baggy fit is very popular here, so when you are shopping, many items are “free size”. Basically, one size fits all. Which is why there is only one size offered. Even if you’re a massive individual, it’ll still be hanging off your body in someway. Additionally, we see a lot of the formal trousers as a common base layer here, paired with a simple tee or button down. While super cool looking, depending on where you live, many people dress very similar to one another, which is actually a common thing in Korea. You will see at least 30 people wearing a similar outfit to the guy in the first picture on a day in July🤣

Not all to advice is good though (I also don’t get why she likes espadrilles so much, and they are both too harsh with some Critique). Totally disagree with the Pinterest thing. Pinterest is going to tailor it's recommendations to what you've already shown interest in. They have tons of runway photos, Japanese street style, basically anything you could want. The ads for Pinterest are not representative of what's on there because pins on Pinterest are uploaded by its users. Id recommend building a library and avoiding the homepage after you've done so.

I try to take all these channels as having a certain audience and having a certain design philosophy, so I dont really care what they think or believe when I am not part of that audience. That aside, alpha m is just a husk at this point being a boost for some genuinely awful brands like MVMT watches. I understand the influencer economy is difficult to sustain but so many of these channels are just thinly veiled commercials. The other factor of course is that being deliberately inflammatory drives engagement, and engagement positive or negative is $$$.
