So, I'm in a screenwriting class, and the professor used to write freelance for star trek, and he says that if you compare your idea to something else, a producer is more likely to pick it up, but you have to specify what makes it different from the original show, too. So what I'm getting at is "American idol, but they're in costumes the whole time" is actually something a producer would eat up.

@@ongakira In South Korea, kpop group members cannot be said to be "singers", they are idols who sing. In the past, for the majority of South Korean people, an idol singer was not a real singer, idol vocal abilities were questioned, and not a few thought idols could not sing. If there are idols who have good vocal skills they understand it's all because of the needs of the group, they know there are at least one or two people who can sing well, and the rest are just beautiful people dancing. That's why Masked Singers are very important for idols back then, even in the early episodes many underestimate idols, if someone has a good voice they will guess that the person is an actor or comedian and not an idol. Solji EXID's victory in masked singer was like a hard blow to South Korean viewers because they didn't expect that she's an idol in a group with sexy concept. Unless they are soloist idols, then their singing skills are not in question.

Just hearing “Spectrum” sent me into fight or flight mode. They are the only internet provider in my rural area and they know it. They charge insane amounts for WiFi and randomly send mystery charges to my card and overdraw my bank account, which then causes the bank to charge me massive overdraft fees. When I call to contest charges I’m on hold a few hours and get transferred an average of 4 times. No one ever knows what’s going on when you call. They deactivated my WiFi for no reason on accident and I spent 4 hours on the phone until 2am and got transferred 6 times and nobody could figure it out. When I finally got to the last person they figured out that the person three transfers ago put the issue into the computer wrong and listed it as an issue a tech would need to come to my house to fix. Unfortunately only she could fix it and their department closed while I was winding through the next few transfers. I had to call the next day and do the whole thing over again. They promised they wouldn’t charge me for this mistake. They charged me $150 dollars the next day and overdrew my bank account for the millionth time. EDIT: THEY DID IT AGAIN TODAY. WHAT ARE YOU CHARGING ME FOR I HAVE DONE NOTHING AHHHHHH

The whole genre of crime shows actually caused a mega problem for forensics. When shows like NCIS and Law and Order became super popular, people were being called up for Jury Duty and legitimately using what they had watched on TV as reasons for deciding whether or not someone was guilty. It's super interesting! Like, collecting DNA and examining it can be super long process but because the shows made it look like such a quick turn around, the juridical system had a mega problem with people demanding particular types of evidence...because they'd seen it on tv.

This video is really making it clear to me why my dad got rid of our cable when I was in preschool and never got it back since. Who in their right mind would pay that much money to watch an episode of a show broken up by obnoxious ads every five minutes making the action of watching one episode a (at least) hour process.
@cameronwilsey93346 ай бұрын
Pretty sure the standard is about 20 minutes of content with 10 minutes of ads, hence the 30 minute time slots. That said I haven't watched cable in at least a decade so maybe it has actually gotten that bad
@blobfish71096 ай бұрын
I remember our family recording every single episode we wanted to watch, and then watching them like an hour later so we could skip all the ads. My sister and I also used to just pause at every commercial, wait until when we thought they were over, and fast forward back to the show. Despite being too young to understand what advertisements even were, we would still rather stare at a paused screen for ten minutes than watch the ads.
@Dodgers5643 ай бұрын
Because it sounds like a lot to learn. I've never had streaming, so it sounds like I'll have to learn which service has which shows. So, I'm always opening and closing apps to change programs? And older people with cable dont even know what a smart TV is, or how a TV connects to the Internet. I have an XBOX hooked up to watch MLB games, but that is the most useless, user hating controller imaginable. Plus, my cable company is also my internet provider. So to get streaming, I have to cancel cable, sign up for new internet, and sign up for and learn to use 3 different streaming services. It sounds so overwhelming and inconvenient that I just keep paying the extra money.

I am aware that it’s licensed so not technically a “rip off”, however I think everyone who’s seen the original from Korea can agree that its a lot better than whatever the hell America did to it 2. Idk why people see “Korean” and immediately think kpop, but a lot of the people on the show aren’t idols at all! But our cable options are all predatory companies (and we're unable to put up the satellite dish for direct TV due to not having a backyard in the apartment complex. Our wifi is at a set price every month, same with the streaming services. It really makes a difference. Having been working for a cable company, we lose money on TV services. It costs us more to provide TV to customers than we can recoup in advertising over 3 years. Typically the pricing is at cost and the only way to get any profit is to tag on the additional fees or get you to add internet. Then we cross our fingers and hope you don't call for a truck roll to your house since statistically you're likely to have a truck rolled to your house within the 2nd year of service (hence the 1 year contract rate)

"Maybe they're not all that bad..." Sky sued (and won against) Microsoft for its usage of the word "Sky" in its cloud service SkyDrive, now renamed OneDrive. The cable company also tried to sue Hello Games out of using "No Man's Sky" as the name of their game. Fun fact: both these shows that drew talked about are American versions (or copies) of two Korean shows: "King of Masked Singer" and "I can see your voice". In King of Masked Singer, the singer is masked and they have to figure out who the singer is. In I can see your voice, there are a group of people with various backstories (some fake, some real), and the judges have to find out which are the good singers. These concepts all work way better because of the whole kpop idol culture in South Korea. Like you would have actual kpop idols come onto Masked Singer to show their skill on live TV, whereas in America you have youtubers singing
@From305toSH2 жыл бұрын
I was going to say, I lived in Korea and saw those tv shows among the multitudes of other variety/competition/reality shows and they "worked" because they exist in an ecosystem where they have their own tropes and styles embedded within them. I wasn't a huge fan of Korean TV but I understood its context after getting to know it better. There was a reason why a former kpop star would get on stage wearing a mask to sing a schmaltzy trot song, while a panel discuss and give commentary about the performance, whereas the whole idea of Masked Singer seems to be "it's wacky and should be different enough to garner buzz"

C Bo55 - Do it. We’ve had it since around February and I haven’t had a single issue. And you can get an extra discount if you or someone in your household has an active ATT account. We got the unlimited plan for $60/month compared to the $90 advertised price.
@nora__4 жыл бұрын
cohen anderson Ugh! I’m sorry man. I hope that they lay down some fiber near you sooner than later.
@ca56114 жыл бұрын
@@nora__ thing is that I worked for directv who was bought out by AT&T (who came in and made us hourly instead of piece rate costing me about 20/hr but that's another story) so I switched to the internet side to make a little more. The state of their internet here is abysmal. Only fiber I ever got to run was over 100 miles away in Atlanta. Around my area you were lucky if you could get 6 to 8 mbps. When I left there it was maxed out at 25mbps. Everything still relied on old phone lines. What makes it worse is that we have only 1 choice for cable internet because the owner was a member of city council and they voted to block all competitors. So for $120 a month I'm supposed to get a "lightning fast" 50mbps but it maxes out at about 25 during peak times and around 30 all other times. What's funny is right across the river in GA, about a mile away, they have Wow, Spectrum, Comcast, and AT&T and you can get 100mbps for about $40. So in other words ass backwards.
