But I would play this game every time Grandma came over, because I didn’t want her to think that I wasn’t thankful for her gifts. Turns out she got this game as a joke because she knew I hated “girly” things. Damnit grandma.

Having played this myself not too long ago I was shocked to see this pinnacle of equestrian based digital entertainment included on your list of terrible games. I know I'm not the only one who eagerly awaits the inevitable remaster (on PS5) plus MANY additional DLC packs (demerara sugar lumps, sparkly blinkers, propeller-topped riding hats, Star Wars speeder-bike reskins, etc). This was one of my introductions to the PS, as a child, along with the god-awful Dukes of Hazzard game. I didn't have a memory card so I never made it to the secret level. Cute and harmless, but even tiny me found the slow down/speed up mechanic weird. My dad thought the game was broken for months cus the frame rate was so slow. Occassionally, I have nightmares of Barbie's monotone valley girl voice congratulating me and telling me "look over there". xD

I'm sure there was an incredibly similar game to this on PC that I played a lot. Not to say it was good or anything, but I'm fond of it. But as with most games, the graphics have not aged well. Also the fact they call it a prequel to Barbie Horse Adventures, my favourite childhood game disgusts me

Even though a bunch of this game was seen as crap, there are some ok parts as long as the context is taken into account so you do not have too high an expectation. Although yes the First-Person-view racing section is bad. The "profile view" racing is reasonable as a horizontal racer even though it is basic. This is because, this is what the GameWave Console might have been able to achieve or at least if only it had a slightly better CPU as an expansion. The Commodore Amiga game "North and South" had a sideways horse "racing" section to the game and this Barbie game could so closely have been that. It is not perfect but is has something going for it. There is a 2005 film (movie) called "Racing Stripes" about a Zebra/ (then Zorse) and the DVD has a game extra sort of like that. It was worse than this Psone title but I couldn't stop playing it because it had a strange curiosity to it in terms of what it could have been if only the hardware had been a bit different. If only this barbie racer game section were there instead, it would have been cool. Java programming on a BluRay would do it. You must remember that the psone continued in popularity even when the ps2 was out. This barbie game was late 1999 and thereby basically year 2000. I also like the rabbit whack-a-mole game section. The tree level looks alright, sort of like arkanoid crossed with space invaders. They made an effort with the 2D graphics, even though some parts do look a bit like a flash browser game. That is kind of cool because 3D on the psone got a bit overdone sometimes in other games. The first person racing section is bad though. A lot of detail in that mane though.
