A few years back I was the victim of an CRA audit. They were going to take everything away from me that I owned. That was to pay the debt they said I owed. After 9 months I went to their office with all my documents. I had gone there on numerous occasions at my expense. It turned out that they had audited the wrong person. It was all based on my middle initial. Never got an apology or we are sorry. Case closed and I was out the travel expense.

Sorry for that, mate. Of all government departments, the tax one seems to be internationally renowned as the worst, and most stubborn one. Every country should have a system in place to, at the very least, reimburse wronged citizens. There are some great jobs that they can do (it was the IRS that took down Capone after all), but I think many offices are housed by people too stubborn to admit when they're wrong.

@@ldannu5627 I am really beginning to wonder about that one. I was stopped by officers, who after running my license number (I didnt have my license with me when I was stopped), claimed that they were going to arrest me for driving on a suspended license. They claimed that the "system" showed that my license had been revoked almost a year before, for accumulated points. I had renewed my license about 3 months prior to them stopping me, and had had no issues renewing it. What saved me was a ticket I had gotten, about 2 weeks before that, for a tail light being out. I asked them how I could have been driving without a license, for almost a year, when I had one for their colleagues to issue a ticket against, 2 weeks prior to them stopping me. Vietnam itself isn't a mistake, considering we had a treaty with South Vietnam and were obligated to come to their aid as per the treaty. What *was* a mistake was letting politicians (who have zero military experience) dictate how the military was to handle themselves in the war. It's why a lot of people who have studied that war, myself included, firmly believe that if the politicians had stayed *out of it* and let the military do their job, it wouldn't have turned into such a huge disaster. Edit: I goofed up and said south korea rather than south vietnam... ughs -,-

Don't mix things up, us Brits don't love being sticklers for inane and insane laws. British local clerical _clerical officers_ love being sticklers... Believe me, I've worked for a few local governments across the country (in the education depts; mostly, but not only, in libraries. One of the few departments that has the backing of the local citizenry. I miss doing that 😥). The crass stupidity I saw in my first "proper" job (at 17) for my county council had me facepalming _before_ that became "a thing". It's not the elected members who are the worst (they're often bad in their own way, but we can boot them out, after all), but the equivalent of civil servants (local government officers and civil servants did not - and probably still don't - want to be mistaken for each other. However, when it comes to it, they do the same sort of thing). Long-term employees running the actual show while the elected talking heads do just that. Talk. Some of these LGOs & civil servants who've only done this job for years, the "lifers", are the "little Hitlers", as we call them (traffic warden is also a popular job for that sort of person), and you can guarantee that it was one of those who was behind that sign. I don't even have to know the story, I'd actually stake a bet on it, and I abhor gambling! I worked with enough of them...🤦🏻♀️

The Vietnam war story of forced relocation was simply awful. I'm guessing some senator at the time thought fortifying existing villages would only give armed sites to the enemy if they were taken, also US spending money on a place they don't own and can't keep after the war was obviously never going to happen, so army bases were a more practical and effective way to win in their limited comprehension of the situation. If the relocation was voluntary for protection and they had chosen one strategic village instead could have been a better proposal.

And showed the auditor the cancelled check. My wife took his desk phone, push it at him and said, “ I want you to call my office right now and tell our employees they would not be getting paid this week because you have their money”. I was stunned, the auditor was even more stunned, he said he would have to discuss this with his supervisor. Less than 10 minutes later he returned, said the lien would be released, he would just need to make a copy of the cancelled check. Lien released, cancelled check returned we went back to our office, employees were paid on Friday as usual.

According to the Social Security Guidelines, A person under 62 years of age (which this person is) can work just as long as long as it is no more than 25/hours a week & their are making less than $1,184 a month. Last time I checked , $2400 a month (working 6 days a week, at $100 a day) plus $1,400 a month for Veterans benefits (for being in the Air Force for 4 years in Desert Storm & taking 2 shots in the leg which gave him a mild limp.) is WAY more than $1,184. Exactly. I have to use a walker, I have had 11 surgeries since 2017 & fixing to have 2 more by year's end & My case is STILL pending...Tell me how is that fair?

Here's one that happened to me, minor compared to the others, but drives me crazy thinking about it. I'm on Food Stamps because of financial reasons, and part of that is renewing it every year so that I keep getting benefits. So one time when I got it, I filled out the paperwork, even did it a second time online just in case, sent it in and went about my business. A month or two later I get a letter from them saying I did not file it on time. Which is of course total bullcrap, and I called them up to see what was going on. When they got back to me, it turned out that the paperwork had been sitting on the person's desk, unfiled for no good reason. I got my benefits back, but the level of incompetence is staggering.

About the FBI door notes, they may have thought it was the cleaning crew! I work in the kitchen of a nursing home, and we regularly send notes with meals because its the only way to get certain special dish types back without someone forgetting between the kitchen and the rooms. Also, only kitchen staff is allowed in the kitchen. Makes sense right? Can't have people without training contaminating things or getting people food that will kill them. So we are to keep all doors locked. We always have one door unlocked, because several personnel turns ago, all the keys were lost!

In Limburg (north-east Belgium), the building permits were sent via the internet to the capital (Brussels). The computers were down for a scheduled maintenance, this had been communicated several times in advance. Normally, after sending the building plans and permits, they were removed from the local computers. So the recipients in Brussels couldn't receive anything and the senders deleted the mail after sending it. They were also working very hard to punish construction tramplers around this period. More than 2000 permits have been lost that week. Because of people who wanted to do additional work and submitted a building application, the government quickly came across the problem. So government employees had to take to the streets. Searching for possible construction sites, renovations and building modifications where the planning application was lost. The government department then had to draw up the building application itself, because they were at fault. And any building violators could also get a violation in order. If they hadn't been too lazy to read the e-mail from Brussels, they wouldn't have had months of work to get rid of their stupidity.

13:15 - Legislative punch-ups are actually somewhat of a _good_ sign, as they serve to show that [a] legislators aren't afraid to publicly and vocally disagree with each other or the government, and that [b] the legislature has enough power to be _worth_ fighting over. Calm, cordial legislatures are more a feature of totalitarian dictatorships, where expressing any disagreement is likely to get a legislator imprisoned or killed, and where there's no point for fighting for control of a legislature that lacks any actual powers.

One year I received a letter from the IRS saying I owed 16k on an estimated near 6 figure income (not really that close unfortunately for that year). But, as I was bantering back and forth with the agent I heard the perfect trigger phrase: prove you don't owe us that. To which I responded: you are the ones asserting the positive claim, therefor the burden of proof is entirely on you to provide the evidence showing that I made that income and owe that tax. They politely hung up, and the matter was resolved. I filed as normal, late as it was, but never heard back ever again over the issue. Remember it's up to the IRS to prove their claims. If you know they are in the wrong because you know their numbers are based on statistics and not hard evidence, then stick to your guns. (This is not a legal claim. Always seek an accountant and/or attorney when in doubt...gosh hasn't our society become touchy ... sign of the times I guess 🥴🙃🥺😱)

The IRS has actually shut down businesses that DIDN'T owe any taxes. One was a family-owned grocery store. They boarded up the store, shut the power off, and let hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of food just rot. That can put an owner out of business permanently. "Oops, I'm sorry" just doesn't cut it. Prison time is appropriate, but I doubt anybody at the IRS has ever gone to jail for shutting down a mom and pop.

Regarding pointless signs, another one from the UK is the one which was emailed to a translation office in Wales to be translated into Welsh, since all official signs there are bilingual. The sign writer received back a text, which was dutifully transcribed onto the sign. Unfortunately, it wasn't the translation of the official text at all. It was the translator's out of office email response. (For context, not all areas of Wales have a decent proportion of native Welsh speakers. There are more first-language Welsh speakers in the North of Wales rather than in the South, which saw a lot of migrant workers over the past centuries due to the coal mining. So in some areas, there are fewer people with the requisite skills to catch errors such as this one...) Frustratingly, my parents lived in Wales for a while before I started school. In the North, education is bilingual, meaning that kids learn both English and Welsh but the bulk of school is conducted in Welsh, with a transition year in English to get ready for Welsh instruction if necessary. But because my mum is Irish and my dad is English and we spoke English at home, the Welsh speaking playgroup wouldn't let me in. It would have been one good way to teach me the Welsh I'd need for school when I was young enough to absorb it easily. This was 40 years ago when things were at their most sensitive and tbh I don't blame them for wanting to preserve their own community and language. I'm not sure whether I'd have retained any of it -- my dad was only there a year or two working on a specific engineering project and we may well have moved on. But it's sad that I never learned at least a bit of it -- I've got a good ear for language as an adult and missed out on a chance to add to my repertoire, which is mainly Eastern European languages, a bit of French and a bit of German. I also lived in Ireland with my mum for a year or two when she was working there and it was really cool to get to know my own heritage; I then went out to Poland for a year to study there and 20 years on am still fairly fluent. It's important for children and young people to be exposed to other languages and cultures and enable free association with other nations.

So my wife was receiving social security for her first husband who had passed away. When we got married she informed them, so they could stop the payments. She aslo changed her last name to mine and updated it with SSA. They continued the deposit but we hadn't noticed because it was electronic. Eventually they stopped and sent us a bill. When we fought back they said we had to pay because we are required to report marriage (even though we had) they kept on until we said we would take it to court. They realized that we would win since she had change her name and marital status (which for some reason they chose to ignore) the same day she informed them they needed to stop.

The elephant one makes some SMALL amount of sense. An elephant's feet are so wide and their regular gait so careful they cause almost no vibrations in the terrain. They would still trigger regular or rudimentary pressure-detecting mines, but proximity mines that are triggered by vibrations in the terrain wouldn't explode if they walked nearby...

Building a nuke. Yes, you can buy enough material to build a nuclear bomb in the US. But that means nothing. The people who think it does mean something are simply ignorant. To actually build a nuclear bomb, you must *refine* that material, you need to extract a specific isotope to a ridiculously high purity, and the US government keeps a close eye worldwide on materials needed to accomplish this refinement. It's actually much easier to monitor and police the refining capabilities everywhere than it is to keep track of the raw materials.
@troodon10962 жыл бұрын
To be fair, convincing the military to fund elephant research on the basis that they might be good at detecting bombs, isn't so much weaponizing the research as it is exactly the opposite.

The elephant bomb squad was in reality to study the structure of an elephants nose so that machines can be upgraded to better track bombs in which have been in use for 20 plus years but after the study of elephants the US military made super advancements and have removed dogs nearly 100% from sniffing duties.

They recognised Taiwan from about 1949 until...sometime in the '80s or '90s. They switched their "allegiance" from one to the other as the PRC seemed the better horse to bet on. As Thad Goy says they will let you recognise one at a time but not both. Although the US still stands with Taiwan is matters of defence. When I was sorting mail in the late '70s we had to be careful not to send mail addressed to the embassy of one of those countries to the other. Even more confusing is that Taiwan calls itself "The Republic of China".

I actually have something but it does not entire go towards the government. I'm german and I'm living right next to an Autobahn, as a sonic shield the German Autobahn (Company's name) planted a bunch of trees in addition with a metal shielding. Nothing rare tbh. However in 2013 the trees grew too big started sprouting on our property and endangered it if it fell over. My Grantaunt (72 at the time) who owned that side of the house back then contacted them. She just beat Cancer and wasnt home for a few months, so seeing the tree glooming over her kitchen gave her stress attacks. She called the German Autobahn and asked for them to settle the issue. They said they would adress it internally. After 4 months she got a letter saying that my 72yo Grant Aunt, who had just beaten cancer, should and is allowed to handle the tree herself. In the end, my dad ended up cutting it down, but the audacity they had sending this letter to my grant aunt basically saying "do it yourself" was outrageous.
