It could have been great if they took the approach Dodge/Chrysler did with the Mercedes platforms. Take the basic platform and redo the exterior, interior, and add an in+house drivetrain and sell the car for a fraction of the cost of the original platform. I’m not even considering a Hornet over a Trax if I were looking for a small domestic hatch, the Hornet just isn’t worth the asking price.

The reason it didn't make this list is, that for everything the Nissan Leaf Isn't, it IS reliable! The big problem with the Leaf, (at least, the older ones) is the CHAdeMO charge port. It's difficult to find DC fast charging for the Leaf. If you charge exclusively at home, it doesn't matter what charge port you have, because all EVSE cables plug into standard household outlets. Replacement batteries for the Nissan Leaf is now open sourced, making replacements easier to come by, and, less expensive.

He's mostly right when you look at these vehicle for purchase at MSRP however, some of this comes down to value for money. The Mercedes EVs are actually quite nice and some have good specs, they just aren't worth the full price for what you are getting especially when you look at depreciation. There are also some good lease deals out there where you can have an EV from anywhere like 18 months to 3 years. The Blazer would have been a bad purchase when it came out, but now after the stop sale and the lower price it might be okay. If it turns out that they fixed the problems, it could be a very nice car. Seems like most people came here to have their preconceptions validated, that's fine, I do that sometimes as well, but I think a lot of these vehicles are worth a look at a certain price. The loss in resale value of EVs seems to primarily be seen as a negative, but the silver lining goes to those who are willing to buy one that is a year or two old.

I agree with you about most of these cars. Mercedes and BMW either don't get it or don't care, either of which is surprising for such landmark nameplates who pride themselves on innovation and are not cheap to say the least. The Blazer and Cadillac Lyriq are built on the same platform and GM has a somewhat unique approach to EVs which will either be hugely successful or bankrupt the company altogether in the long term. I am betting on the former. I don't know what happened with the Blazer but GM is determined and did halt production in order to avoid massive recalls. Volkswagen by contrast had a terrible launch of ID4 but went forward full steam anyway so the buyers of the early cars really got stuck with a terrible product, which has only recently improved. The other models are from manufacturers I would avoid altogether.

I agree with most of this. I'm not sure Lucid should be lumped in with VinFast or Fisker. Their reliability needs to improve, but their actual sole offering at this point is otherwise brilliant. As for the Blazer EV, the initial launch was disastrous, but of all the EVs I've driven recently, it's the one that stands out, and actually feels like a screaming deal in base 2LT eAWD form. The content and drive were very impressive, but I'm waiting a year for reliability data and the NACS charge port.

In this day and age, I would buy a Toyota hybrid over anything else (other hybrids and all EVs). EV depreciation factor is just too high, overall ownership cost outweights the money you save on fuel, even you keep it 5-6 yrs while the battery is still under warranty. If you have business tax credit towards your ride, I would also say Model Y&3 if the insurance cost is not crazy: nearly sports car performance and cheaper than the ICE sports cars. That is why there are so many of them on the road.

I wonder how fuel consumption (MPG) data for hybrids is measured. I used to know one woman who had a Honday Pilot hybrid. She complained that on a highway her hybrid car had lower fuel efficiency than a regular Honda Pllot. MPG of a hybrid can't be better than of a regular gas model with the same gas engine that goes on a highway without breaking, because the idea of a hybrid is to recover part of energy during breaking. That is Physics 101. If that is true, then most MPG data for large hybrids is false.

fuel consumption on highways is always worse for hybrids. My Fusion Energi loved sitting in traffic and driving up to ~50 mph. Anything higher and the mileage started to suffer since it relied more on the underpowered ICE.
@Inkling777
@Inkling777 Ай бұрын
The mpg advantage of hybrids is in stop-go city traffic. Rather than heating the brakes, energy from stopping at a red light is stored in the battery to be used when the car starts out again. Since there's little stop-go driving on a highway that savings goes away. The mpg may even be worse due to the need to haul those batteries around. Driven carefully, limiting braking and rapid accelerations, and an ICE can get mileage not that different from a hybrid. That is why my 2000 Toyota Echo gets 42 mpg around town, not that much less than a hybrid Prius.

I have to disagree with the assessment on the Blazer EV and Model X. The Blazer had a horrible launch because GM rushed it out the door much like Fisker with poor hardware/software union tuning. With updated firmware and software updates most of the problems were resolved. I have never owned a GM vehicle but I do find the Blazer looks and rides very well. If you're a GM buyer it will probably be much more reliable at the 10 year mark than any Acadia/Traverse ICE that they currently sell. Sure it's going to lose a lot in depreciation but it will still start every day unlike the ICE counterparts. Same with the Model X. I've had one for 6 years and other than 2 sets of tires, the brake fluid flush and wiper blades it hasn't had a lick of repair maintenance. I am luckier than some with those Falcon doors but there's no better highway cruiser on the market with that much space that moves so economically. It has a high up front cost but the significantly lower chance of rollover compared to minivans/SUVs made the decision for me to switch off my Honda Odyssey. The Kia EV9 is a good budget option but will probably have more mechanical issues. The Rivian R1S is a better off-roader but again has more mechanical issues. Unless you're taking more than 2 long haul trips a week with a large family I would easily choose a Blazer EV or Model X over similar ICE counterparts for safety and long term reliability.

BS. A Korean (PHEV) clunker cannot even come close to the champion Toyota Prius (Prime). The battery is covered by a very solid warranty (8-10 years, depending on checking it annually or not) at Toyota. Replacing it would mean that it is out of the warranty period or it was involved in an accident w/o insurance or it has too many miles on it etc. Also, 16k seems like the price for a small BEV battery, not for a PHEV one. But, yes, it is true that this same vlogger uncovered real cases of electric Korean cars' owners being ripped off in Canada with battery prices of above 50k!!! I don't even have a Toyota (I drive a few other Japanese segment champion cars), but I managed fleets of hundreds of cars, including Korean, European, American or Japanese cars, so I have enough know how on all of them, mostly in line with the statistics from Consumer Reports, I See Cars, yourmechanic.com etc. It seems you are just a Korean fanboi, trolling the best Japanese car producers.

@@PamenterDoug, honest maybe, but not logical. And your honesty is questionable because you didn't give ANY detail on that 16k bs about Prime battery, thus I cannot believe it. The battery lasts (usually - and hopefully for you too) more than 10 years. Only when adding the battery replacement cost we can have the real TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for the long term. For Prius hybrid the TCO is known already and it is amazing (thus the taxi fleets' owners choice), but we don't have yet the TCO for the PHEV. What we already have is that the #1 car producer (Toyota/Lexus) is far above the Kia/Hyundai/Genesis conglomerate (despite being helped a lot by the South Korean government, like Samsung and others) in both reliability and low TCO. Thus nobody can argue that the Koreans are better than the Japanese top producers according to hard data/statistics.

I paid less then MSRP, and got it less then what a Ford Escape PHEV ( which at the time had a dealer mark up of $3,500, but still got it cheaper even without the dealer markup ) was going for, and where a RAV4 Prime ( basically the same price ) was ( and still is ) unavailable, and a 2 year old used Prime was selling for $15,000 more then my out the door price. Other then 9 recalls ( 2 for decals that did not have metric or French on them, that I did myself, 3 for checking high voltage connections were tight, no parts needed, 1 to replace a switch, and 3 for software updates, because where I live the vehicle would not update itself ) I have had zero problems with it, everything is operating above my expectations, and I am getting better electrical range and gas mileage then stated on the Vehicle price sheet. It handles great, looks much nicer then its competition ( I compared the Sprint model against the Escape and Prime, where most reviewers, etc., compare the Veloce model that they are given by the dealers against the BMW X1 or Mercedes GLA, etc. which to me is not a fair comparison ). It is not perfect, just like every vehicle in certain aspects, but I love it, love driving it, glad I bought it rather then any of the half dozen or so other PHEVS I test drove, and I would buy it again. And, it fits nicely in my garage. All new vehicles have there problems, and mine did too, but the dealership I bought mine from, bent over backwards to accommodate me with the recalls, offered me a loaner while my vehicle was being serviced, and Alfa has resolved every issue with my vehicle, some well documented. I cannot say I would have gotten the same treatment from any other manufacturer. Maybe I am lucky with my vehicle, but my whole experience, from buying it through to service, driving, etc., could not have been simpler, easier, stress free, and satisfying.

I can't believe that anyone. would buy Alfa Romeo or Dodge Hornet Hybrid. you crazy if ever consider any of these junk companies vehicles. the Hornet AWD system. failed at a review test drive. and that was a brand new Vehicle with AWD system that is failed just after few miles of testing. imagine after 6 years of driving where that Vehivle will be. the same gose for the Jeep brand i heared a lot of storise about how the dealer is like as soon you bought the Vehicle when your'e back with issuse you get tread it bad. EV technology is not ready. in my opinion still needs at least another 10 t0 20 more years to be almost dependable. Tesla is just over priced poring looking Vehicle all is the same. the German brand need to face massive boycott until they fix their reliability and the way they make failure Vehicles that comes at the expense of their customers to keep them running.

You don’t get full EV mode in a standard hybrid because the battery is too small. Plug-ins give you anywhere from 10 to 40 miles on electric power alone. Some people with PHEVs only fill up the gas tank once every 4-6 weeks because so much of the driving is done on battery power alone.

What Stellantis has done to the Wrangler is nauseating to me. I loved my 91 Wrangler Hardtop. Today's Wrangler is but a mere shadow of its former self. It is still beautiful in a Jeep kinda way, but the beauty is skin deep, the "ugly" goes right down into the crankcase.

Please add the Chinese commies' clunkers (the ex-British MG and Polestar, BYD, SAIC, Xiaomi etc.) especially the electric ones, generally ALL BEVs (Tesla included). The best are Toyota/Lexus hybrids. A special mention for Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, a great deal.

As usual your video is terribly biased. The best advice for anyone considering an EV: Stay away from anything from Japan. First of all they are made in China, second they do not perform anyway near their claims. On top they are not better protected against rust than their fossile vehicles. HEV´s and PHEV´s are for city driving only. Outside cities they are costly and stupid vehicles regardless of make. No one really can make any claims about chinese EV´s yet, as they just came about. So no one really knows. Until somebody do, I would stay away from them, incl. Japanese/Chinese disasters. IMO the only ones doing serious business into EV´s are Tesla, VW, BMW and MB. Tesla is the leading star, regardless of all the crap told about them. They use aluminium throughout the chassis, and very well thought out electric technology. Don´t underestimate Tesla. VW has as well as Tesla created a very efficient platform, taken into business by i.e. Ford, who will stop producing ICE in Europe only in 2026, replacing everything with VW EV platforms, which are performing very well. Renault/Nissan is also very competitive, and they are using Google Automotive, which is Andoid on wheels, and is absolute spiffing, leaving the rest of the ricecookers behind. Toyota claims every now and then, that they are almost ready with 800 miles battery capacity, charged from 20 to 80 in 10 minutes. Don´t beleive that crap, Toyota blew their chance long time ago, and the japanese legend of smooth and reliable mechanics was lost with EV´s, needing nothing from the past. Just my five cents
