The art of Stasis is controversial for being so different and abstract. People often say Richard did his aunt a favour and included one of her paintings in his game, but that is not the real story!

I don't think it's "dogged on" as such. There's a world of nuances between dogging on something, and just not being able to appreciate the art in question. I think this relates to a wider trend when it comes to art in general: There are two main ways of doing art, which splits the art appreciator world into two groups. One is for the avid/pretentious art consumer, depending on who you ask. Lots of self-appointed "modern art" fits into this category. It's intentionally difficult to parse and is often intentionally done with a markedly lower visual fidelity (Picasso, for instance, could produce stunningly photo-realistic renderings, but chose not to), in part to feed into that special/pretentious sentiment that is so valued with the patrons of this type of art, and usually requires a small novel's worth of text to contextualise the artwork. The other type is rather straight-forward: Aiming towards as technically proficient a presentation as possible and avoiding open-ended ambiguities in the visual language. This spans the gamut from high-quality comic books, to animation, to game illustration of all kinds, and so on. This is the type that a plurality of art patrons appreciate, in part because it clearly shows off the artist's technical ability and in part because it's easy to take in and relate to, due to the low degree of ambiguity. As such, it's the preferred style of most economic ventures. For obvious reasons, the first type is not the art of the average art consumer, because at best it takes a lot of time to develop an appreciation of, as it is designed to not be appreciated or even appreciable at face value. As for Stasis: Even among the very disparate art styles in early magic cards, it still manages to stands out quite a bit, and the visual fidelity of it is markedly lower than with other artwork from that time, let alone compared to the average level of art quality and direction these days. As such, it gets a bad rap. It's like doing a Death Metal set at a Country festival: It's the wrong type of art for the audience. Those are my two cents, at least.

I love the art of newer magic cards,but...it is often very literal nowadays and very much look like scenes from the set they come from a little too often. I love looking back at older cards where the art style could be a little more abstract and standalone. Makes me think and feel far more for the card as a whole personally. I miss a lot of the old art, because even most of the "bad" art still had character because it felt different and weird and memorable. Yeah, the Stasis art might be "bad" art for a TCG but people still talk about it and recognize it. We've got "bad" art today, too, but most of the art just feels the same. Most modern Magic art is photorealistic and polished to a sheen. But the rough edges we lost were what made a lot of the art special. Now, weird and experimental stuff is pushed to Secret Lairs. And, like, I'm happy we have that rather than nothing but it would be cool if we could give a bit more power for individual artists in main sets to do their own thing. Sure, we'll probably get bad art if we do that but you can't do anything great without some risk.

I showed this card to a friend of mine who took arts as his major and he interpreted it as the two in the balance are the combatants (players). The one who has a blindfold is the opponent who was forced under the stasis, the palette puts the perspective of the stopping of time. Amazingly, my friend was able to explain the card to its entirety even though for us the art did not make sense so this means the art is not weird at all.

Yes, not knowing the backstory until today, i always liked it and it has those "fine art"-vibes unlike any other card. Now i learned, this actually is museum-quality fine art, quite amazing. It just does not fit the fantasy theme, but if you like art in general and have some knowledge from going to museums or from studying it, it makes sense. A bit sad that this is a path not taken, they went with the fantasy style instead of including more fine art.

Stasis has always been one of my favorite arts in the game. It's very mysterious and abstract. I remember when I was starting to paint, I tried replicating Stasis and showed it to my mom. She asked me if it was about slavery. Whether or not that has any relevance to the original art or anything else, it's such an abstract and confusing piece that I think it's reasonable for different people to find those kinds of deep connections in the art. I remember there was a point in maybe ~2012(?) where Wizards had partnered with what I guess could be called a Streetwear brand. They had sneakers (and I believe shirts, etc) with iconic MTG art on them. Most of them were your boring Jayces and so on, but one of the only "OG" pieces they had was Stasis. I was very tempted to buy a pair and regret not doing so. How I presented myself at the time just didn't matter enough to justify the $70+? price tag. Too bad. I think Stasis is an excellent representation of grassroots Magic.

@@CardmarketMagic I tried looking a bit in wayback machine. I couldn't find any references to the Stasis sneakers, or the collection I *swear* existed, but there were design contests around 2009 which most of the images from seem to be lost. None of them resemble what I remember. There is a 2020 K-Swiss collab that vaguely resembles the Jayce-themed shoe I remember, but definitely isn't the same collection. I believe they had one for each mana symbol, the Jayce one, a few other staples, and then friggin Stasis which I'll never not regret missing out on.

The original artwork in the early days actually was always something that I loved. The uniformity of later cards is probably an improvement for the game, as it helps if everything tie in together, but some originality and iconicness was certainly lost with it. This was very interesting, Carl, loved seeing all of the classic art too. I legit had never seen stasis before, while it is different, I don't think it's bad, I could sorta tell from the get go that it was a very abstract take on the concept, a balance of sorts between different parties and I guess when you look at the mechanics of the card, that does work. It's art that represents a stalemate (a better name for the card maybe), rather than everything being frozen through some sci-fi or fantasy means.

I love Stasis, I believe I still have an Unlimited copy of it from back in the days together with the IV edition playset. Its art is so unique and surreal, that while at odds with most of MtG artworks (especially modern ones, that with few notable exceptions tend to be a bit too samey for my taste, while exceptionally well executed) it still somewhat captures the sense of immobility and frustration cause by the mechanical effect of this enchantment.

When you show that montage of her art, it makes me wonder if they might've expected her to paint one of her scenes of people in oddly stiff, statue-like poses, representing the concept of being frozen in time. "Nightmare" pre dates magic by well over a decade -- it's an old AD&D 1st edition creature (appearing in the original Monster Manual, 1977), so there was no pun invented there. Ms Benson was probably very well aware as to what it is when she created the art. It's origins go back far farther than that -- the first concepts being from as far back as the 1300s, according to Oxford.

This has always been one of my absolute favorites. Faye Jones is clearly a fan of primitivism, which to me, cuts much more quickly to a sense of awe...which is absolutely crucial to my mind if you want to make magic seem "real." I think that is because something that is suggestive and mysterious rather than obvious and literal is FAR more likely to trigger your imagination, which is how we participate in fantasy and make it meaningful. I love how WOTC has come to embrace many more artisitic aesthetics but sometimes wish they weren't so contained within secret lair sets. I do get pretty bored with how literal the art can tend to be though. In the Comics/Storytelling/Art+Text/Film world, like the most basic basic rule is that you don't show and tell the same thing because that asks nothing of the audience. There is no space for wonder or interpretation...and we become passive consumers arguing about how "accurate" things are.

Semi-related but while I totally understand the reasoning behind the 8th edition card design change (to make the text stand out more and be easier to read) for me it was a huge hit to the "you are two wizards battling it in a fantasy world with spell scrolls and magical artifacts" feel of the game that the original card design aided.

Call me a boomer on this, but I miss Magic's old artworks. Not this hyperrealized trendy stuff, where everything looks too similar ans way to catchy (even Commons get artworks where everything is exploding or bathed in radiation). The surreal, sometimes impressionistic approaches gave Magic cards theire own characteristics and made them way more interesting than just brilliant craftmanship and software supported creations could ever achieve. But that's just me, a fossil not ready to let go. Anyways, thanks for this great video, I'd like to see more of that stuff.

I really do wish more fine art would make its way into Magic. I love when unique styles are presented on cards, and I've always enjoyed the singularly strangeness of Stasis just as much as I've hated playing against it, haha. I'm personally not a fan of the stylisitically uniform look of card art in modern sets (as compared to like Mirage and older). There was a lot of imagination and whimsy in having a diverse set of styles and images across the cards. But as the game became more and more committed to storytelling through sets (which I know many care about, I couldn't care less about Magic's story), it only started making sense to be more homogenous in style, and for me I will always regret what kind of art could have been if it had kept to original aesthetic ideas. Secret Lairs help, at least.

I like Statis's art. I also love the deck. I can think of cards with much worse art such as Reverse Polarity. There are modern cards that I know have terrible 3D art, but I dont recall the names.

I'm just going to say this before reading the comments or watching the video. Stasis has my favorite art of all of magic art and always has.

I gotchu, the art depicts a student, descovering magic far beyond their needs, a destructive magic that while providing power, burns and desteoys everything around you, thats why they have smoke and stuff burning in the background, drawn showing someone both wield their treasure while carelessly wasting it away

Guess I'm too new and used to alt-arts to notice this art is out of the ordinary.

Whart about the black card that is just black with two small white eyes? From Legends I believe... That is clearly the worse artwork...

Word of Command by Jesper Myrfors was in Alpha. Amy Weber also has some duds in Alpha. These came about because a couple of artists didn't turn in their comissions and Myrfors and Weber were on staff at the budgeoning WotC, so when the art didn't show up on time, they basically did illustrations for a few cards on a single day, just to get something to the printers in time for them to deliver the cards for GenCon. Justim Hamptons "Reverse Polarity" from Antiquities is also often named as a piece of bad art - but there I think it was mainly an issue of WotC having to hire any talent they could get and Hampton is an illustrator from Seattle. He did a lot of work for the local music scene (and mid 90s that obviously meant quite a bit of work) and his style wasn't a good fit for MtG. The market for full color fantasy illustrations in the early 90s wasn't that big - maybe 2000 pieces per year. Then MtG comes around and adds something like 600 pieces per year at the start. And of course a lot of other TCGs get created in its wake so by '96 we're looking at 5000 pieces at least. There is a lot of scrambling for talent.

Of course gliding got more support. As if it wasn't broken already, they really thought 7 cupcakes was enough of a cost to keep it in check. Even without it you're probably not even getting to your turn without having 9 bruises.

I think it is ok, considering it is from the very start of the whole thing. I have more issues with newer art not being at the high level MTG is known for, because in those cases there is no "reasoning"

The worst MTG card art of all time is Clint Cearley's Syncopate from Return to Ravnica, this is cool and good. Also the Faithless Looting from Mystical Archives is amazing, I won't hear it uttered.

I've always liked the Stasis art. It made you think and use your imagination. Unlike a lot of the art now that is overly detailed.

I’d rather have every art be Stasis, than the generic high-fantasy digital style that’s plastered all over most modern MTG cards
