A lot of people are unaware, but the alpha version of the set included a land that tapped for green and said "this doesn't count as your land drop for the turn". Most people glance over it till I mention Uncounterable Mox. I'll reach out to Keith to see of he can remind me of the name.
@ColMcWillis2 жыл бұрын
I confirmed with Keith (the one that contacted Barry and found the set) and he confirmed it was called Wild Forest and never made it out of the alpha design of the set (probably for being OP)

While obviously completely broken, with the intention of the "very rare" rarity, it sounds cool. Once in a lifetime you just come across this card and are just blown away by its power.

they could create it by adding a "When it enters the battlefield, tap it and your opponents draw a card. if you don't, sacrifice it". it may be balanced this way

I can imagine how the Staff of Odin came to be. "Hey Barry, after those Atlas and Lifegeyser cards, I was wondering." "Hm?" "Just how long will a game take? Like, how are you ending those games when you have a billion lands and life?" "Yeah... there should be like, a stopping point right? Game too long, let's go home kinda thing" "Yeah, like, pffft, imagine playing to turn 30, gone through half your deck and stuff" "...Having 30 mana you mean..."
@barath4545 Жыл бұрын
Some notes: - Staff of Odin being Poly makes a TON of sense. Tapping your opponents stuff with Icy was HUGE back then and a useless 20-CC artifact was no good, but if you could feed it just 10 colorless (Remember the Tron lands from AQ, Sol Ring, Mana Vault and so on), then it could always be fired off. Also, in Alpha there was a little card called Animate Artifact which would make it 20/20 and then only Swords and Desert Twister could take it out, or an X spell as Terror cannot touch artifacts! Staff of Odin is better than it seems. - Geyser of life being blue/green makes thematical sense - Green for life and Blue for "geyser" (water) - And the 8 CC makes sense since it kills any red deck and the damage based black decks from that time (Drain Life, Frozen Shade, Nightmare). - Huge creatures (LB proof) with no drawbacks back then were RARE - Pretty much just Shivan, Serra, Juzam - Island Fish Jas, Lord of the Pit, Force, Personal Inc, were all horseshit. So the Archangel being held back to Visions makes a lot of sense as Spirit of the Night and Crimson Hellkite was the first big creatures with no drawbacks in Mirage, after a while. - Plasma Balls invented Kicker but in a way Fireball already had that with the intense math you had to do after paying the first Red. - Atlas still makes sense at 6G. Back then colorless was cheaper and not restricted to artifact casting - except for the Workshop - Sol Ring, Tron lands, Mana Vault, Basalt Monolith and offcolor Moxes could EASY hit those 6 before you even had 3 lands down. Would not make a big difference initially, but it's green and enemy colors black had Sinkhole and blue had Statis. And Atlas has no drawbacks and is still 5/5 and EASY to fit into a multicolor deck with artifacts and get down on turn 3/4. - Blessed Land is what Consecrate Land from Alpha should have been! White was weak enough back then already, since a lot of players despised the Circles/Wards and anti-color stuff cards, so usually White was handicapped when players boycutted the Circles/Wards from play and Wild Growth was weaker but it was also just Common, so would have made sense. - High Treason is to be compared to Eye For an Eye and Reverse Damage from AN and Alpha - But I feel the nearest time they made it was Reflect Damage in Mirage. The card would have made a ton of sense and it's regretable it was not made in period. - Manipulation is weak, but move around Auras back then was big as there was a LOT of Auras around, both good and bad ones. In a stalemate late game that one spell could shake up the entire stalemate and weaken one main threat severely. Would make sense in "93/94 format" for sure. - Caterpillar reminds me of Rukh Egg, 0/3, kill it with a block or better, Wrath of God and it converts to a 4/4 flying dragon. The cards might seem weird to newer players but makes a ton of sense to me, who played from Revised to Tempest but mostly with 93/94 cards.

I was thinking the same! It seems like a perfect way to get around the reserved list, guaranteed not to devalue cards. Only I would not just make them legendary, but also make it so you can only play 1 in each deck. But the big issue is that they would of course be mythic rares... If they printed them as rares, I would love it. If they print them as mythic rares, this would be awful for the game.

Lifebringer doesn't have lifelink though. Lifelink doesn't use the stack, while his ability would, and it's only activated when Lifebringer deals damage to an opponent, so you don't gain life when blocking or getting blocked.

yes, it's the [...] mantle ability, I forget the name.

The Lifebringer does not have lifelink, it's a trigger, which can be important, because if it was lifelink, you would have to activate it before damage, in which case you might be blown out.

i feel like manipulation back then could only be good if they had a wall and you put the enchantments on the wall. Now I can see it being used as an anti-voltron, like if you have a creature with a sword of light and shadow, you can move all the white auras/enchantments they have onto that creature to make it fall off and go to the graveyard

After watching this video, I read through the full spoiler for the set and while it definitely has a lot of super weird, very oldschool ideas, cards that were very far off from the color pie (even as it was vaguely obeyed in the early days) and most creatures have really bad rates, it has some genuinely cool ideas and cards that seem quite printable / playable nowadays. One example was I think a Werewolf for WB that is a 4/1 on your turn and a 1/4 on your opponents turns. I'm sure there's been actual cards similar to that printed in the mean time but it's a simple idea, the cost isn't outlandish by any means, and it's got a good bit of flavor tying the whole thing together. Really quite a forward thinking set in a lot of ways, and I feel like Magic as a game was done a disservice by this set not having been printed directly in some form.

I still have the formal response from Wizards somewhere from when I submitted my own art and card designs. They sent them back with a formal submission form, saying they could only accept whole sets, and gave me an example form for Ice Age. And my art and cards wsn't very good, anyway

@chrayez2 жыл бұрын
I think Staff of Odin would have been more interesting if the casting cost and activation cost were swapped. As it is now, if you’re able to cast it (even if some Rituals or fast mana were involved), you’ll almost definitely have enough mana to activate the ability once you untap, giving exactly one turn for your opponent to respond. If you could play it for 10 but had to wait for 20 to activate it, there would have been more “strategy” or mind games involved. Do you wait to play it until you know you’ll have 20 mana on untap, or do you play it earlier to bluff fast-mana? 🤷🏼♂️

Making a lot of comments for this one, how the Staff of Odin specifically stated it didn't need to be tapped to be used, going into old school rules of the game where tapped artifacts were "shut off". Never played with the rules myself, but curious what and old rules game would be like.
@auberry86132 жыл бұрын
That was for continuous artifacts, not all artifacts. Why? Cause screw you for trying to understand how artifacts work or something. The other 2 artifact types being mono and poly and discussed in this video, mono artifacts and poly artifacts looked the same for their text box, but you'd just have to know that mono artifacts tap to activate unlike poly artifacts.

The way Blessed Land is worded, could I cast multiple Blessed Land on the same land?
@tyrusdalet2 жыл бұрын
I would say no. When a card refers to itself by name, it means “this object”. So when you enchant the land, it becomes unaffected by (and unenchantable by) all other enchantments OTHER than the one specific Blessed Land enchanting it. New ones couldn’t target it.
@arcuscotangens2 жыл бұрын
@@tyrusdalet Clearly that is how it is intended, but I don't think the text makes this absolutely clear. I could easily imagine this slipping past quality control until some judge has to rule on it.
@tyrusdalet2 жыл бұрын
@@arcuscotangens text means nothing when the way cards work is spelled out clearly. Rules as written, the only way that you would be able to enchant it with multiple copies with how it’s worded it would need to specify that “cards called Blessed Land can target this land”. Hell, the way that it’s worded as is, even flickering the enchant for a free re-attach wouldn’t work, as it can’t be ENCHANTED by other enchants, not that it can’t be the target of other enchantments.
