Well. Never thought I'd see Andre have an existential crisis. In all honesty, I'm going through the same thing. The discourse over The Last Jedi has ruined my ability to enjoy any other Star Wars movie. I absolutely adored what I read of the Transformers comics that ended in November, and I can't help but notice all the people that do nothing but talk about their failings. And even outside geek culture, my dad works for the government, and their is the question hanging in the air if we can stay afloat with the shutdown. Just remember the stuff that makes you happy. I can't help but smile whenever I hear the music from any Star Wars movie. I can't help but smile thinking about Bumblebee and Spider-Verse. If we can focus on those things, we'll be just fine and have something to help us through the rainy days.
@jarosbodytko64625 жыл бұрын
True. I'm one of the people who actually enjoyed The Last Jedi a lot, despite certain odd scenes in the movie. But even so, since then I can't bring myself to watch Star Wars anymore, not even the original trilogy. Nor read the current comics (which really are great to be honest), or even collect figures and model kits anymore. It's like that movie took out all of my enthusiasm from the franchise. Which is weird because, as I said, I really enjoyed it. Maybe it's all the negativity from the fan community that broke me instead of the movie itself. Whatever reason it is, I haven't seen Solo yet and I'm not that excited to see Episode IX really. Geekdom has just become a very toxic environment, which is completely opposite of what it should be.
@PickyPeeves5 жыл бұрын
@@jarosbodytko6462 Absolutely. I did see Solo with my family and enjoyed it, and I remember coming out of TLJ saying "I'd hate to be the one that has to write Episode IX to top this." But anymore? I'm kind of dreading it. Not because I don't think it'll be good, but because if the... strange discourse. I mean, that weird lie going around about how Lucasfilm is insulting fans, when the examples they've shown are being misinterpreted and taken out of context? I mean, after nine or ten years since last seeing them, I thought about revisiting the prequels, well before TLJ came out, and I went through I and II, and I will admit I've softened on them. (I kinda think people are blowing the politics in them out of proportion, and the only real problem I have is the wooden acting and the repetitive cinematography for the podracing scene.) But whenever I sit down to watch III? I just end up feeling... kinda depressed. I mean, I still like Star Wars, and Empire's one of my favorite movies of all time, but I honestly couldn't be bothered to go back and watch any of them unless I'm forced to by my family.
@MmMm-sf7pe5 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about Lost Light (the TF comic)? Because I HEAR YOU. I can't believe how many people do nothing but nitpick them. Personally I thought they were amazing. I'm blown away when I think about how far IDW has come. It wasn't too long ago when their storylines were as unnuanced as: "We're the Decepticons and we're helping North Korea! Because we're both EEEEVIL!" (Oof.) Very sorry to hear you're getting hit by the shutdown. D: I hope it's resolved soon!
@PickyPeeves5 жыл бұрын
@@MmMm-sf7pe EXACTLY. It might be me being biased, as I started reading them when I got into high school and they were some of the main things that got me through it, and the penultimate issue came out when I was in kind of the worst spot I could be in. I've always had problems with self-esteem, so Rodimus' speech about how everyone is important to each other was kind of the slap in the face I needed. I also was going through an ugly breakup, and I admittedly saw Nautica getting together with Skids, but the single panel of her and Brainstorm holding hands... it helped. But when I saw the thread on TFW and saw people complaining about how the series jumped the shark after Dark Cybertron, I just... can't agree with it, as that's when they could bring in Megatron, who was far and away the best part of season 2. "Oh, but the series had so much potential, and Roberts went with the worst possible option!" So, what would've been a better option than exploring the psychology of the leader of a violent group, while delivering a theme of how everyone has worth, even the people who most people see as nothing more than extras? There isn't much to worry about with the shutdown, by the way. My dad works for Defense, so he's getting paid.

Jaros Bodytko Picky Peeves For what it’s worth, I really really liked Solo. For me it felt like a return to the basics. I like Last Jedi a lot too but Solo tops it for me. It had the more down to Earth feel that Force Awakens, Rogue One, and the original trilogy had. I agree on the backlash and unrest in the community; it’s soured me on the franchise a fair amount, which weirdly makes me appreciate Solo and Rogue One more because they’re not tied to the toxicity at all. It’s a sad time when people can’t even talk about freaking Star Wars without a war breaking out 😔. So maybe Solo will reinvigorate your waning interest a bit. Hopefully it does, but I’d understand if you still didn’t want to see it.

Now those of us who used to be quietly invested, can more openly express our love for it. But, that ferocity gets out of hand and destructive when we constantly dictate how others should experience & enjoy what we’ve loved on our own for years. I've seen this build up for a long time now, Andre. Your frustration with the nerd community. I feel like a lot of what you make, you do it because you have to, not that you're really passionate. Is there something missing in your life? Besides like a good algorithm and happy community. I've been watching since before the Xbox One was released (watched your videos on PS4 and Xbox One E3 back in the day) and have seen you grow and change throughout the years. The biggest thing I've noticed is that it's not "Black Nerd Comedy" or anything like the past where you kinda joked about most things and your rants were funny more than from the heart/real. Thing is, I think the best thing to help just live a happier life would be to go live a "normal" life. Take a break from KZbin or Twitch and be Andre. Go out, date, relax, enjoy things without feeling like it's a job for once. When was the last time you played a game or watched a movie without thinking "this will be good for a video, whats the script going to be?" I am so proud of you for doing this video. You’re right. You’re absolutely right. It’s been rough but we’ve been more verbally abusive to each other about what we like or dislike, what we’ve enjoyed or what we’ve hated in the past couple of years than we should’ve been. Life is hard enough as it is & games, movies & comics were our escape but with everyone putting everything down instead of uniting as one, we’ve torn each other apart & drained ourselves with all this negativity & ugliness rather than appreciating the Beauty of Geekdom. We’ve made being fans into something political & one of the great things about being a Geek is that we were able to avoid all the politics but now we’re smack-dab in the middle of it anytime we say something. Hell, someone’s probably gonna write some hate speech about what I’m saying! There used to be a freedom in being a Geek, it’s why it was the perfect escape but now it’s claustrophobic & everyone’s a critic on the things we grew up loving. I’m not saying that people shouldn’t have an opinion but it has gotten incredibly out of control. Fans have blasted things so hard that the Actors the true fans loved for the shows/movies are quitting. We’re over-stressing ourselves over who they’ll cast, if they’ll be the right color or the right gender or who they’ll be attached to instead of being excited that they’re even being shown on the big screen in the first place. It’s sad but there’s a silver lining in this shitstorm: THANOS IS COMING AGAIN 💜 💙 ❤️ 🧡 💚 💛 I know that may not sound like a solution but it is for me. It’s easy & it’s so simple that it puts a smile on my face & that’s what we need to go back to: the simplicity of being fans. The whole reason we were excited about everything is because the stuff that we loved when we were young were finally getting the recognition they deserved. So, for me, the easiest thing to be happy about is that the Mad Titan snapped his fingers & Hollywood showed it on the silver screen. I got to sit with an audience that was just as excited as I was, surrounded by friends & family as one of my favorite moments in comic book history played out on the big screen. It was beautiful; perfect, even. And it’s a moment that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. Some might find that juvenile but that’s okay. It’s a Geek Thang, not everyone needs to understand it. I do.

I don’t really ever comment though and I am sorry I haven’t been there to help combat the negative comments. I really appreciate this video. Hey Andre, thanks a lot for existing. I watched your best of the year video thinking I really like hearing from this person with their energy and analysis on things. And I was therefore thinking oh no the worst of will be not fun because it'll be all negative. But no, you again really had awesome analysis and input. I agree with what you're thinking of not having to build yourself out of others opinions. I definitely support you in figuring out your direction in life. Whether it's making internet videos or anything else it's your essence that you bring to it that I think is what makes it so good. Thanks again and please continue to exist as best you can!

Geek culture can be so exhausting in the internet age. A while back I had to take a break from fandom and re-evaluate my relationship with the Stuff I Like. I'm actually currently catching up on, like, 3 years of Marvel movies that I missed. Up till recently, Guardians 2 and Black Panther were literally the only two Marvel movies I'd seen since the FIRST Guardians. I only just saw The Last Jedi yesterday. And I gave up a few shows altogether because I realized that I didn't even like them anymore (if I ever did in the first place). My relationship with fandom/geek stuff got to a point where it felt like a chore that had consumed my whole life. And all the negativity online didn't help. Now I just focus on the fun. They're movies, they're games, they're comic books. We don't need to take everything so seriously. This is supposed to be fun. So I no longer care what the consensus is on this stuff. I only care about whether or not it brings me joy.
@MmMm-sf7pe5 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said, and I also want to say that personally I've always found "geek subculture" in general to be kind of exhausting. Like this expectation that if I like a couple "geeky" franchises, I MUST like all of them. Every anime, every 80s toyline, and of course . . . I gotta be into Funko Pops. I never asked to be part of a subculture, I just want to like the things I like.
@jinkiesjess5 жыл бұрын
@@MmMm-sf7pe Yes! People act like you have to be into everything! I stopped watching Game of Thrones because I realized that I didn't care and wasn't enjoying it. I only started in the first place because I felt like I had to. It was homework.

The general public are ruining everything with their fighting and opinions nowadays, and it has noticeably affected you. After all the joy you have brought, you deserve to be happy. Andre, probably aren’t gonna see this but ever since I saw one of your videos I’ve loved how energetic and excited you are about anything nerd related whether it’d be Mario, sonic, a new system or black panther, it always made me happy to see you happy cause i can tell you really love it and you’re right. Geek and nerd cultured has evolved from being passionate about something to bitching and hate, nerds have gone from being bullied to being the bullies themselves, and it really makes it hard to be apart of something that feels like it sparks negativity rather than positivity. Not saying that we can’t not like something but it makes it hard to be honest anymore. This black nerd rant was well needed, and lastly keep being you no matter what you do cause it’s that why I’ve always been subscribed 👍🏼

I relate to you so much in this, Andre. Its so hard to see the possitive in geek culture when everyone around you is so fucking negative about everything. Ive stopped trying to make "geeky" friends because of this, and have just enjoyed the things I enjoy for myself, not because I am worried about appeasing peoples opinions about everything. This is why enjoy watching you, you are an extremely rare person that can find the good in almost anything and I live for your energy. You are one of the only people on youtube that I watch very single video of ;even if I'm not interested in the subject; and its absolutely CRIMINAL that you haven't hit 1mil yet. I felt every bit of this video Andre and it's not just based upon your area of things you love. It's just society in general period. There fact that approval is needed from a huge consensus before we can approved things ourselves is overwhelmingly unauthentic and unfair. Yes content needs to be created to speak out and appeal to the masses, but hell you can't appease everyone. This year, and beyond, do what makes Andre happy and excited! We will see it unfold or we won't. Either way, those who have been with you from the beginning will still ride with you. Yeah the algorithm is some shit too. I agree! 😕

Thanks Andre. I needed to hear something like this today. I know it's tough with geek culture. Lately it has been overwhelming. Especially with all the negativity. I've been umfollowing a lot of stuff lately because everything seems to be getting massively negative, pollarized and politicized. I think one of the main problems is over saturation and the escape failing to be an escape anymore. And KZbin with no alternative to youtube makes it tough on everyone. This year especially has seemed like Google was trying to kill KZbin. But, I guess the best thing you can do is diversify your distribution and reach. And also do what you love. But, keep your chin up Andre. You've always seemed like a good dude. I might not agree with everything you say and like, but that's what makes us all unique our differences and the fact that we can still enjoy someone else's work. Sorry for the long rambling comment, but thanks for the years of great content, you're not alone in your frustration. I hope you're ok.

Damn, Andre! So much "yes" to everything you said in this video. You are one of only two nerds that I follow on KZbin. For me, you represent everything geek culture should be about: finding what you like and sharing that joy with others. I am old enough to remember when "geek" was an insult because geek culture was far from mainstream. 10,000 attendees was the size of a "huge" convention, and geeks used to get super excited about the newest fantasy, scifi, or superhero anything because those movies, tv shows, etc. were a rare treat. It's sad to see some people failing to appreciate that we are living in a geek utopia right now, where the big complaints are "why are they are making a movie of THAT Star Wars character" or people complaining that there are too many superhero films. You have the right idea. Like what you like, and don't feel the need to apologize for it. That's the way it should be. Please don't let the toxicity of KZbin comments sections and other social media get you down. Negative people don't deserve to win. :-)

You're always so real, Andre, I appreciate you not sugarcoating it. I think a lot of people in general are tired of all the toxicity in geek and pop culture. We thought we were having fun bitching about the media we enjoyed when most of us were teens or in college, but tribalism came along and turned fun geek banter into constant arguments that go too far. I hope 2019 will bring us together more and bring back enjoyment into geek culture.

I'm not super involved in geek culture, but I really love geek stuff. I feel like that's the best place to be. I know the haters are out there, but they're just don't factor in to my life. Sometimes my wife and I roll our eyes at them or bemoan their existence, but they don't take up more than 5 minutes of our day. I guess it's a new twist on the old adage of cutting out the people in your life that bring you down. Won't work for everyone, I suppose it especially won't work for anyone who makes their living off talking about this stuff. Just seems like a weird problem to have. I like debating the relative merits of various pieces on entertainment with my friends.
