I'd say "Basic" goes in "Midly Annoying", because of what you said. They usually show signs of snobism, if they don't then they are just "Nerds" or "Casuals", but what makes them "Basics" is the fact they showcase their infinite knowledge of film while only watching popular movies.

My brother is such a film snob that he criticizes everyone else's film tastes and gets super defensive/offended if you don't like the same things he does. His favorite film is "Whiplash", so I sent him the Adam Neely video about it, thinking he'd find it interesting. He got so pissed off by it he actually dm'd Adam about how "wrong" he was, then he scream-ranted at me in person for daring to send that video to him. Maybe calling him a "snob" is too kind.

His taste is too basic to be a film snob, he's probably transitioning from the basic category to the snob, which is probably worst because at least snobs have their own personal taste, Whiplash as a favorite screams "i just started watching movies seriously but i still have to figure out what i like". That said i love Chazelle

I think "casual" should be in the "Mixed Bag" category. Yeah, there are some that are chill, but many are insufferable. There are many who are willing to detract from a movie just because everything's not spoon-fed to them or it has subtitles. There's also a sub-category of "tag-a-longs" who is only watching a movie because someone else they want to be around is watching it (Usually a love interest). They also detract by drawing focus on the person they want to hang out with.

It's fine and has nothing to do with intelligence. It's more about focus and how involved one can get into the story. Some people see a rat running through a city for 10 minutes and their imaginations get going as to what will happen or why the director did this. Others are sensible enough to just think "Is there a movie here, or am I going to be watching an f-ing rat all day." For the record, I'm the first type.

Nit pickers often don't say what they really mean, nit picking is a classic sign of impatience & boredom (this is why if say there is a gardener in an out door scene, they pay THEM more attention than the fore ground actors) but they don't SAY they were bored after 5 minutes watching, (knowing the critisism they will get) always expecting a fast paced easily understood film.

If I'm being honest with myself, I feel like I fall into the camp of half basic half over analyzer. I don't go out of my way to watch that many movies as I'm more of a video game and music guy. I'll definitely watch a movie that isn't as well known if it's of interest to me, and I'm trying to do a better job of broadening my horizons, but I can't say my film taste is the most unique in the world. I also do fall into the trap of trying to pick apart things in films that really don't need to be picked apart, and I think part of that is out of fear of being biased and blinded from problems, though this used to be way worse a few years ago.

Here are my thoughts: Film Snob: Definitely insufferable. I think a work of art can come from anywhere (even children's movies, even cheesy sci-fi and/or action movies, etc), and I'm someone who thinks that sometimes a true masterpiece will avoid acting or selling itself as one as much as possible (basically displaying humility as opposed to pride), so these people gatekeeping certain films and acting like you're a dumb person for not liking an arthouse movie (or even liking but just not quite getting it enough to call it a masterpiece) are annoying. Movie Nerd I would agree is generally chill. They'll like talking about anything and will probably have seen enough movies from different eras and genres to have a fun conversation. Easily Offended I'd say depends on which side they are on. If they are part of the anti-woke crowd I'd say Insufferable. But those that argue things like "The Dark Knight is fascist propaganda" or "Forrest Gump is do as you're told conservative boomer propaganda" are Mildly Annoying. I think there's discussion to be made about how someone's political views are likely going to be found in the film they make, as well as how people who don't think much about what a movie's trying to say (and merely watch it for entertainment) could end up developing some bad morals because of it, so I think there can be a solid discussion in that regard, but at the same time whenever I see one of these people criticize a popular movie citing political views and nothing else I do question if they were going in with an open mind. I think you have a point that a lot of truly toxic fanboys/fangirls can be found in one of the other categories, but I'd put them closer to Mixed Bag depending on the fanbase. The best or worst character traits of an individual person will be at their most apparent when they discuss the movies they are superfans of, but I think the one thing that separates someone who should be called a fan like a badge of honor and one who should be called a fan as a means of disgrace is how self-aware they are. Nitpickers are definitely Mixed Bag, mainly because they don't seem to have an off switch. Casual is chill. Basic I think depends on who you meet, when you meet them, and how you feel about the movies they love. I think if you agree with them they are Mostly Chill, but if you disagree with them then they are Mildly Annoying (especially if the signs of snobbery can be found). That said, I do think that if you disagree with them that you will be the insufferable one half the time. I'm pretty confident I am in the over-analyzer category, because so much of my thoughts nowadays include things like what each shot choice, camera movement, edit, etc might mean (as well as what the movie itself might be trying to communicate in the script). I would agree that over-analyzers would be Mostly Chill for the reasons you mentioned, but I do think if said person's takes are a lot more contrarion (which my takes most definitely are) then I'd put them in Mixed Bag. Book Purists annoy me so much. I think there can be fun discussions to be made regarding how changing something as simple as someone's hair color could impact the atmosphere, but when they always instead argue that the book is better or get upset about something being removed, I start to question why they're even there sometimes. Books I think are great when it comes to internal thoughts (because those are hard to properly create in movies), but movies I think work much better with visual stuff, and there are several more factors to it that books don't have (cinematography, editing, music and sound). Plus, I think books can be critiqued just like movies can, and I think having a "the book is better" mindset unintentionally hinders the idea of criticizing the source. I think when the books don't come into conversation they're fine, but once they start comparing with the original source I'd put them in the Insufferable category (they may provide some insight into the topic, but so do film snobs). Cynics I'd also put as Mildly Annoying. Because I have a lot of contrarion takes and identify with the over-analyzer category, I constantly fear people see me as a cynic who hates everything, but I avoid looking down on people who loving something that's popular. Loud in theaters people are Actual Scum. Those who cheer I can understand (even if they annoy me) because they are being emotional about the film and are enjoying the experience, but at the same time those people lack the common sense that most people would have their theater experience ruined a bit by someone cheering super loudly in the theater. But those who use their phone for example make me ask why they're even there as opposed to watching at home. Oldheads I'd say are in between Mostly Chill and Mixed Bag. Many of these people are just stuck in their time period and occasionally sound condescending with the "modern movies suck" attitude, but if you talk with them about movies from their own time period they would probably be Chill. Conformists are Mildly Annoying. It's not even that their ratings are pretty much the same as everyone else, it's that they generally don't express well their reasons. I do wonder though what a conformist's take would be on Star Wars: The Last Jedi though.

From my experience i would bring the "Book purist" down a tier. Yes you can learn more about the original source material through conversation with them (if you did not read the material as well), but the purists will always be putting the film adaptations down, so trying to talk to them about an adaptation you enjoyed is insufferable. Harry Potter fans are some of the worst i've come across where about 95% of criticisms are simply "this was different from the book" or "this part from the book was left out of the movie".

How do we feel about Superman? Wouldn't it be upsetting if, in this case, they gave Superman blond hair. Let's go ahead and add a man-bun and a snarky attitude? Now imagine a movie being made where a generation of people will only ever see that as THE Superman. And what if they made Lex Luthor a Kryptonian? And cast Jack Black as Green Lantern? Both things of which came very close to happening. I thank God for book purists being vocal enough to stop those from happening. Can they be pedantic? Sure. But they also are fulfilling a purpose.

I've gotten a lot of hate in the past for having valid critisms for movies like Halloween 1978, and Carrie 1976. If you tell me I don't understand cinema just because i don't like a movie, you are a snob. As for myself, I'm a mix between a fanboy and book purist. I do love talking about the differeneces between the book and movie, and they're not always for the better. But if I see a movie that either honors the book with slight changes, or does good as its own thing, I will give it the credit it deserves.

Ok, hate to out myself as a snob, but the Basic level is so frustrating. Five directors exist in their universe (Spielberg, Scorsese, Tarantino, Nolan, and Villeneuve), and "It's A Wonderful Life" represents almost their entire experience with black and white movies, and they spin vast castles out of this. They are actually the same people as conformists, and are often snobby about not being snobs for movies from the past they haven't seen. If more movies from the 1970s (for example) were seen by these same people I'm convinced Tarantino's popularity would crumble like a cookie---after you see enough films by William Friedkin, Martin Ritt, Peter Yates, Werner Herzog, John Frankenheimer, John Sturges, Mike Hodges, Sidney Lumet, Sam Peckinpah, Francis Ford Coppola, and yes early Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg...now you can say Taxi Driver is exceptional, but it's no longer exceptional in a vacuum or because you were told it was. Now you've seen Get Carter and The French Connection and Sorcerer and Duel and The Friends of Eddie Coyle and Dog Day Afternoon, Black Sunday, Dirty Harry, The Taking of Pelham 123...and suddenly you have not just a context for Taxi Driver, but for why Star Wars became so popular in the middle of this incredibly cynical decade. You think you hate stuffy 1950s movies? I can make a list of 25 movies from the 1950s (with no best picture winners and no musicals) that will turn you into the ultimate classic cinema fan. It's not really about hating basic moviewatchers for how little they've seen, it's frustration that their universe is so small and wanting to open some doors for them. Not asking anyone to see any director's entire filmography, just to do yourself a favor and see more movies from the past. ESPECIALLY because it's so easy to do--far easier than it's ever been. And for the record, there are snobs for snobs. Like, all the movies I listed are way too mainstream for them and we should be watching lost films that aren't recoverable.
