Absolutely. you get that stuff out at the rehearsal before tech week. if (Big if) you have a particularly strong cast you can do one during a brush up (assuming your show is infrequent enough to need one), but that's a case by case call.

During a middle school play I was in, one of the 8th graders was notorious for switching off the mic during dress/mic rehearsals and cracking jokes onstage to try and get the other kids to break form (since nobody could hear him while the mic was off). On one of the _actual performance days_ he tried to do that to me after my line "Who's that masked man riding over the next ridge?" but forgot to switch his mic off, so the _entire middle school student body_ just heard the other actor onstage say "Your mom" at full volume he didn't land any lead roles when we got to high school drama club

My theater teacher and director was the anti Medusa. Everyone got a fair shot at every part. I spent time on stage (sometimes in multiple roles) and backstage (from stagecrew, to makeup and wardrobe, to lights and sound). And I can tell you with utmost confidence, if ANYONE had pulled a prank in the middle of a performance they would have never set foot in that theater again. RIP Mr. G. You are missed.

As a former choir kid, the fact that the good boy managed to keep his part going without much issue wasn't a surprise. Part of a good choir performance is remembering what your part is and where it goes in the song, no matter how off-timed and out of key the singing itself had become. This is especially true for smaller choirs. The best performances must adapt as it was better for the whole group to sink together, rather than one try to course-correct and stand out like a sore thumb. To add to this, dick pics means nothing when the choir's stage can literally be anywhere and the surrounding elements can be absolutely overpowering. Nothing like singing long-winded Christmas carols underneath both lights and black lights and seeing the slowly increasing number of wasps gather right above my head.

@VixinMcCloud

Okay, judging by the responses, maybe I should set the stage, so to speak. I live in Australia, so summer Christmas. At the end of each year, the choir would go the local historical village (think of an old-looking town designed to teach kids history, aka no window coverings nor air control of any kind) and have an hour to two hour concert running through every Christmas song we learned, both in the current year and in previous years. Think of it as a final concert for the choir more than anything. The performance itself was set up in the town hall, on top of an elevated stage. There, the owners rigged up mics close to the front row and multiple coloured stage lights right above our heads (they weren't normally part of the building), including black lights which boggles the mind to this day. The last thing to note about this place is that the historical village isn't connected to the actual town I came from. It was sitting all by itself, surrounded by untouched bush and wildlife. By now, I hope you can see where this is going. Not five minutes after the stage lights were on, the bugs started coming in, attracted to the light. There were moths, flies and wasps. If you said boo, the mic would pick you up and everyone in the audience would hear it (including the choir conductor and mine was like Medusa, only less obvious and wrapped up in a "good church girl" kind of package, but more vindictive since she didn't have a school to answer to), so all you could do was pray none of the bugs landed on you. After that point, all the other bugs would slowly be chased away as more wasps would turn up, and more, and more, and more, until there was a swarm covering the stage lights. I was in that particular choir for four years and this happened every year without fail. No one was ever stung thankfully, but many of us choir members would have collective horror stories about how close the wasps got afterwards. It's a bizarre experience having your mouth wide open, trying to hold notes for as long as possible before breathing, all the while your face becomes the perfect lubricated cave for bugs to start exploring, should they choose.

@@thomasfoster7387they were either in on it or had absolutely no idea, got most of the blame from the professor or medusa, and then reprimanded the crew, reported it to the director(s) then the crew got reprimanded. This is something that would happen in my school bc all the theatre and choir kids are friends or the same people so if some pranks were pulled they would either be in on it or have LITERALLY no idea. I was the little assistant stage manager who was classmates but not really a friend so no one would have told me and me and my sm were very no nonsense so we would have hated to have been blamed for something idiotic like this. Not even three weeks ago, my school was doing their second performance of our play, and I was a stage manager. The 6-7th graders in the audience were THE WORST that most teachers said they've ever seen. They were constantly laughing at the actors, tripping them in the aisles, and **taking photos of them to post online to make fun of them.** It got to the point that our second act had to be pushed back by several minutes because of the actors crying, and the rest of the play being miserable. Our school even had to try and investigate in order to find out who the children were. Luckily, on our next (and last) show, we pulled things together and had a great time, but it just goes to show who underappreciative some people can be. Being able to shake it off and continue is a skill that a lot of people have to learn to move forward.

I was a part of a choir in high school where the teacher absolutely had favorites. I'm not saying I was the most talented amongst the entire group, but she would completely ban other kids from auditioning for certain parts because she would reserve them for her favorites, which I found to be incredibly unfair. Making my life a total hell, I will say that the pettiness and the favoritism within the art departments, seems to be widespread, and I really think that they should be ashamed of how they treated the kids who finally got leads in this show.

Once during my school's plays, there was a scene where all the lead roles are herded up by the bad guys. I was one of these bad guys and everything went fine until the final show night when I kept hearing the main character (played by a senior and was a 7 year veteran) struggling to get through his lines as he kept chuckling and laughing during the scene. When I slightly peeked over to find out what was so funny, I saw one of the other seniors who played one of the bad guys holding and speaking his lines through a dinosaur puppet that he had on his hand instead of having his weapon in front of the whole audience. He knew what he was doing and surprisingly, the director didn't chew him out for it. Good times!

As a proud member of my theater club’s costume crew, pulling a prank on the cast members is a terrifying thought. But if that were to happen I would have full faith in the cast members to keep going, as I’ve seen firsthand that there amazing improvisers. And as Lead of my costume crew I would make sure that a prank like that Would never happen, not on my watch.🙂 and have a nice day/night.

I would love to hear more pirate/theatre stories! While I wasn’t in a theatre group at school or outside of it, I have sisters who were. The stories they told me about favourites, the backstage drama and of course, bullying disguised as ‘pranks’, did put me off auditioning for anything. But when I graduated, I was happier helping backstage at a local theatre group my sisters went to and thankfully, most of these ‘pranks’ were off stage. Mostly it was an unwritten rule that if you pulled a prank during performances, your head would end up on a stake.

Love how a Gilbert and Sullivan parody has an interesting story behind it! As a former theater kid, I get the struggle of trying to cut it in a musical. I tried out for two musicals and failed both times. I was able to make it into a play my junior year, though, and it was one of my fondest high school memories. Also no, the tech crew didn't pull any pranks on us. Since it was a big cast, most of us played tech crew while offstage, and there was only one non-cast tech person and she was really friendly. There was a time we were doing improv games as practice and the main girl got me to leave the stage in one sentence playing "Bus Stop" by saying she was on her period. XD

This one hits so close to home, so close. Being both choir and theater kid, me and a few others were targets for pranks on the stage (mainly rehearsals) but this prank happened opening night. Luckily our production was "A Funny thing happened on the way to the Forum" which has plenty of Forth-Wall breaks, so... ultimately, opening night, a pranked happened and we rolled with it, and decided to include it for the remaining nights cause the audience loved it so much. I.E; Happened during "Everybody ought to have a Maid" song were a prop was thrown from back stage to being off stage at the feet of the crowd (with the intention to being broken). Those of us preforming the song needed the prop to pass along among ourselves, so, to get the prop, we turned the first to rows of the audience into a conga line that went from them back to the stage and a different cast member leading the audience back to their seats as the song was nearing the end.

I hope the holidays are treating you well and that 2024 will be a golden year for your channel.
