I have due to space restrictions and the way the transformers situation is now.. With all the companies out there, be it official or 3rd party its the same characters been done over and over again that collecting transformers now is "meh"... Sorry but I don't need 50 million variants of optimus prime or bumblebee or starscream etc etc.

Nearly caught up on all your videos now and love them. This one was a bit of an emotional one for me. I have struggled with gambling for the majority of my life. I started collecting potf2 figures in my teens then moved onto vintage in my late teens/early 20s. Gambling destroyed my life and i had to sell everything - gutted 😔 After stuggling with my addiction for the best part of 10 years i finally broke the cycle 5 years ago. I worked hard and built my relationships and trust back up and worked at chipping away at my debt. Debt free i then started saving for my dream of becoming a home owner. I realised this dream last year getting my first mortgage with my wife (who stuck with me throughout). For a long time i have spent no money on myself, purely fed my habit. I decided this Christmas that it was time to start collecting Star wars vintage again! I found your videos straight away and have been watching them since, im hooked! So much advice and great content. Im sticking to a small budget of around 50-100 per month depending on spare income and i have over 10 figures now. This is going to take me several years to complete the full run but im in for the long haul and will save up for the last 17 figures when the time comes. My life feels on track for the first time and im loving following your journey as i take mine - at a somewhat slower pace. But this is my journey and this video has given me more clarity on this. Thankyou for making this video it touched me and i look forward to the next.

First off Dan, thanks for sharing your story and being strong to realize you had weaknesses, getting help and getting to a place to get yourself into the life you want. That’s amazing my friend and truly inspiring. I know I went deep on this issue, but I it’s been something that we all have to deal with and something I just wanted people to be aware of. Now let’s collect the way that we want to collect, have fun, and have our loved ones be a part of our journey :). Have a great Sunday Dan and thank YOU!

Joey, you’re an absolute joy and asset to the hobby, thanks great discussion around these challenges. Sorry I missed your poll, if I were to add one of my biggest obstacles personally is location. Location location location. Living in the middle of seemingly nowhere, no real local shops to hunt, and with shipping costs being VERY prohibitive, it has become real hard to justify many purchases. The fact that many sellers refuse to ship international also pose a real challenge. Cheers!

That’s a good one. I have a lot of people from Australia and such saying that it’s hard to collect the vintage line or even some modern figures thst don’t make it over there. Dude! Best video so far about the collecting journey. Nostalgia as a coping mechanism is well known to only be healthy when it’s not hyper fixation. Being self aware enough of our own motivations for collecting our memories. Slowing down and having patience keeps this hobby where it should be in your lives - as only one of the many things that brings us joy. More power to your elbow J! May the force be with you always!

Definitely a deep dive video. I wasn't expecting the range of topics or how real & open it was going to get. I ended up watching it twice because I wanted to really take in what you were saying & contemplate those aspects vs my experiences & feelings. It's always good to have a balanced and focused approach on your collecting hobby. Keeping in mind your priorities & loved ones is paramount to a healthy "addiction" for sure. I think all of the subjects you discussed can resonate with virtually all your community on some level, as most are ones we will all see on our journeys. I personally have had cycles of unfocused collecting which has been both costly & taxing, but is now literally taking space away from displaying the items I can about most now (vintage). I'd love to part ways with much of it but am faced with a bit of an overwhelming feeling of where to even start. And more so, how much time will it take out of my already crazy busy weekly schedule. It's easier just to not do it. But at some point, I'm really going to have to clean house. I wish I had shops local to me where I could sell or trade as you do in Cali. I really appreciated this episode and hopefully it will cause others to reflect on their own collecting hobbies. And closing with a weapon pick up for your OG Ackbar was the perfect soft close after the hefty episode too. Great balance Joey. I applaud the forethought & consideration. You never cease to amaze me, even after 72 episodes. So happy to have you in the community & always look forward to what you'll find next & the range of topics you discuss. MTFBWY Always!

Great video Joey and you raise something very important that non collectors don’t understand because in a lot of cases as collectors we can have difficulty explaining what and why we what we do. But that is the same with any passion or sport it’s very easy to get lost in the moment and before you know it it’s a problem that from the inside you don’t see !

Thanks for your insight Ashley! Yes this topic was on my mind for a while and I’m glad that so many people can relate and understand the plight that some of us go through. Not just the topical problems like “no room”. Which is still a huge problem but not as mental as “no emotional support”. But as long as we communicate and are real with ourselves, I think that we will be having fun and collecting forever :). Thanks my friend

Good video topic. I think if you are feeling overwhelmed, by collecting, then a break may be necessary. I am personally on break due to so many pre-orders. But, it also feels good to take the time and enjoy what I have. Many times I buy stuff and forget to enjoy my collections I have dispalyed or even put away. i find, that if I can aquire something, I just go back and look at the toys I havent visited for awhile. Kinda fills that gap and puts my brain back at zero. Thanks for the excellent topic.

Probably the most important video made in this series. Been there done that ever since EP1, I went into massive credit card debt from action figure purchases. In reality it was a blessing in disguise. After I learned how to budget, how banks work, and learned what APR was. I was in 15k in credit card debt, and it took 5 years to pay off. I've also been in therapy, and i learn that there's honestly nothing wrong with me, this is a healthy hobby for me because I'm passionate about it, and I should continue to collect until I have a reason to stop. My advice is the following: Use credit cards responsibly, pay them off every month, never make a late payment. If you aren't making full payments per month, you need to stop collecting until the card is paid off. If you're in massive credit card debt, you need to stop buying, and see a therapist.

Great episode. Example of patience my blue snag from my childhood got smashed back in 2000. I did not want to pay a crazy price for it. 22 years later i finally scored a mint one when buying a lot from another collector i barely paid $200 for the blue snag and sold the rest for a profit. It took a very long time and i finally got lucky in the wild. Plus all you said about your family supporting you or not, that is always hard i am going through that negativity it’s real. Always impressed by your content. It’s becoming more than a collection channel. I have gone through many stages of hobbies throughout the years and have a strong focus on one then migrate to another. Eventually I circle back. I have a buddy that shares most of my collecting interests so that makes it fun. Nephews are into card collecting now so it’s a bond to share a passion and also connect with them. I truly understand what you’re saying about the support system and the mental health side of any hobby. Where some social media can be detrimental, you’ve created a community of support, acceptance and encouragement. A simple reassuring comment goes a long way. Keep up the great work. Everyone would understand if you needed time for you. This is a marathon not a sprint. Don’t feel obligated to post. Provide content that is meaningful when you have something of substance to say. As always best wishes. Until the next adventure….

@zarnistastudios

All excellent points. Collecting should be fun and not having a budget or proper space for the collection you want is tough. Can’t do much about prices, they are what they are. And if you use space to your advantage, you can trade up as needed or wanted. For instance, get a lower quality figure cheaply to fill the gap, then when budget allows trade up and sell the lower quality figure for a higher end one. And you may make a little on the sale. We all as collectors should be buyers and sellers to have the healthiest collections. Just my 2 cents

Just found your channel and definitely subbed to it. I have always said my bills come first, have to keep the lights and heat on not to mention my car and a roof over my head. Second, I pay myself. Yes. A 401k and similar investments are inportant so we can enjoy our lives in our golden years whether you still collect then or interests change. Last is my "fun" money. Do I want a pizza on a saturday night or maybe go to a bar for a couple beers or buy tickets to a ballgame...or maybe I want this new figure. But its my choice and I have to live with the repercussions of that choice. Always have a savings, investments and bills paid before making any fun purchase. I stick to that and only deal in cash. If I dont have the cash i refuse to put any item on my credit card if I cannot immediately pay for it. My words of wisdom from the bottom of the glass. Good luck with everyones collection and stay true to yourself.

I completely agree with all the points here. I've collected since the 1970's and love action figures. I want to continue finding new figures but the freaking cost has made me stop so many lines I wanted to add to my collection. I cannot fathom how a JoyToy figure costs $50-$70 for a 3.75 inch figure. Holy crap. Acid Rain is the same with nice looking figures but holy cow there's no way, beyond fabulous wealth or trust fund, that I can see getting these figures. My scale is great for vehicles and characters but now one 3.75 inch Star Wars figure costs the same as a Black Series figure. Yeah, I know, first world problems, but I find most figures now are getting beyond what anyone can afford to pay and I just don't get why that is. Don't toy companies want to sell toys?

@@thepadawancollectorofficial A lot of the Joy Toy collection is super-articulated and amazing including the Warhammer 40K line. But, again, some of these figures are now selling for $75 + US new. Great stuff Joey, you touched on some really tough topics here that a lot of collectors might or have faced. I'll admit my wife isn't the most enthusiastic person when it comes to my collection, but she does understand why I love it so much and she's ok with it. My biggest fear is tat after I'm gone, she sells my collection for what she thinks I paid for it! 😁 Of course, as I'm packing up my collection to prep our house for sale....I'm wondering if perhaps I have a slight problem here! 😁 Not trying to keep up with other collectors is another big one. I love the guys on Collection Wars, but there's no way I could have that many high end props and studio scale models in my collection! My collection is pretty eclectic having a mix of vintage and modern toys as well as props replicas, helmets and costumes as well as just oddball stuff like film trailers! I might not be able to match what some of my friends over there have, but the theme of my channel is that we all collect differently and that is something to be celebrated! Love the Ackbar! I received mine from that very mail-a-way promotion back in the day and he's still in great shape and complete!

@@thepadawancollectorofficial I do still have my mail-away figures. Boba Fett, Bossk, 4-L0M, Ackbar, The Emperor and even an accessory pack are still in my collection and were all mail-away promotions. It was fun as a kid to get the proofs of purchase and sending away for them and the day that little white mailer box showed up it was like Christmas morning! There are such great memories from my childhood attached to my vintage Star Wars figures and it's so great that I still have them. Today, I chuckle a little everytime I see someone going after a 20 back carded Boba Fett because, as far as I'm concerned, Boba Fett did not come on a card! 😁 Great video Joey....keep up the great work!

I really enjoyed this Video Joey! OCD I can understand, but not in relation to my own Childhood Vintage Collection, but then? And there is a then for as a child I potently experienced what I call Star Wars Figure or Collector’s Anxiety? Is it the same thing as what the Contemporary Vintage Collector Experiences? I have my childhood Collection and I have my 1995 to present day Collection, but I’m not too bothered in rushing to complete it, as I do not think that it can ever be so? Contemporary Figure’s- Disney/ Hasbro will bring out a multitude variant of the same Figure or produce an exclusive short run to feed the Seagull Frenzy! With the contemporary collection I cottoned on to it’s lack of care insidious exploitative tendencies. For example, how many Darth Vaders dose one need? Or General Grievous or Chewbacca? None of them are consistent, none of them are consistently painted or made well and none of them are of the same height, in particular Chewbacca and Grievous? How many re-released multiple’s of the same character that has been produced professing to be more accurate than the last Figure? I have found that it is easier to settle upon one out of each group that is imbued with the essence of that Character! Simpler, you don’t loose your sanity and it is easier on your pocket! I am content. But other’s may argue that it is fine for me as I still have my Childhood Collection and in that aspect herein I find that contentment and not feel the compulsion to complete? I may have found that out the hard way with my other Love and that’s model building, however? The one thing that you have not mentioned fully Joey and that is the complete Snobbery that has pervaded the Community? But then, I personally feel that this trait is a carry over from some of our childhood’s, the haves and have nots and the Social Exclusion which is derived from that? Also I’ve noticed that within some Communities those Individuals who have secured for themselves a Wild Find are either derided and disbelieved or are called out as Out and Out Liar’s? There are other’s like myself who have been accused of stealing their Collection’s because they are Mint or have recently acquired them? Also there is the price issues? Even Beater Figure’s are creeping up in price and the accessories and vehicles are Pseudo Stratospheric with no ceiling in sight! It seems to be Taboo to make an observation on some of these asking and buying price’s especially when the item is in chronic condition but command’s a set amount because of it’s rarity? Personally I wouldn’t buy a Blue Snaggletooth with his legs half chewed off nor would I buy a brittle plastic smashed up Farm Boy Luke because it’s another rare variant nor would I buy a ripped vinyl caped Jawa? But these are my own personal choices and perspectives that in my view has to give way to a certain amount of practical and well applied common sense! Am I criticising mania as a genre that is galloping away with itself and will I have Hater’s at my Heel’s for making an observation? I remember as a Student just before going away to College, I was working on the dining room table and I happened to have a Storm Trooper Figure on the table when my late Grandmother visited. Upon seeing the Figure She Berated, “Have you still got that Rubbish Around You?” To I replied- “Yes, Grandma, I do. And it’s going to Be Valuable Rubbish Some Day.” She wasn’t impressed. But little how I knew that my words would prove strangely and aptly Prophetic? My Family on the whole loathed Star Wars, they never understood it and most of them resented having to cave in and buy some of us children Star Wars Figures. One late Aunt was very different. She Loved Star Wars and Science Fiction and would indulge us from time to time. I vaguely remember when when she went to see Alien and then rather bizarrely telling us about the Chest Bursting Scene, which I sort of found disgusting as a very young child- I guess that I didn’t understand and God himself couldn’t have prepared me when I saw that scene for the first time, but I digress. I have another Aunt who Staunchly with her husband refused to buy her children anything Star Wars. In fact she rarely bought them toys. So when my cousin’s visited, the first thing they would ask me and our other cousin “Where are your Star Wars Figure’s and what New Ones Have You Got?I felt sorry for them on occasions. My Aunt was a Horrible Tyrant when we were children. She’s oddly different in some ways, but remains as miserly as can be! Sometimes it’s a Generational thing when relatives, friends and loved ones don’t understand. For me I’m rather Fortunate with my Wife as She Love’s Science Fiction and Myth- and I Just thought She was Hot Looking? Kidding- but it was a genuine surprise when I would talk about stuff and She would say, “Oh, you like that do you? I Like that too.” Super Bonus! But not everyone is lucky in that regard and I don’t believe in imposing your hobbies and tastes on your children either. If your children like what you like, fair enough and if they don’t there is no reason to feel estranged? Again as you said Joey it is working hard at your Relationship’s! But there is Aggression out there towards some Collector’s from outside as well as from within the Community as collecting is driven by very real and perhaps primal emotion’s. For me, my Figure’s represent True Happiness, a Feeling of Contentment and Safety within My Own Little World as my reality, unfortunately was so much Darker. So for me, they were and are always that Safe Place that I can retreat to when I’m feeling down, dejected, unwell or that strange sense of loneliness that jumps you once and a while. Each Figure for me encapsulates a time, a moment where that childhood joy is pure, untarnished and undamaged. A Perfect Moment when that Figure and all of the Collection become your Best Buddies, Your True and Only Family. Perhaps these are the Feelings that the Contemporary Collector is endeavouring to recapture? Is it one thing to Chase Lightening and another to Actually Capture it? So many imponderables?

I have Mint on Card vintage items and when I pass away, I want that to go to my family to either sell or keep if they wish. At that moment in time, the collection will be theirs and I hope they can sell it to another collector who will enjoy it, or I hope they can enjoy it themselves. If you want to be burried with your Mint on Card, and that’s what you wish, I think that’s a fine idea :). Whatever makes YOU happy my friend. The main problem I face now is the fact that collecting isn't what it used to be. Gone are the days when stores had rows of pegs full of figures to chose from. The Power Of The Jedi, Saga Collection, Original Trilogy Collection, Legacy Collection were the gold old days when it was a collectors paradise. Now everything is TVC, Haslab preorder and Hasbro Pulse. Figures are made in very limited numbers these days. There's no fun in the hunt anymore. It doesn't look like Hasbro will be making anymore figures outside their TVC line now. They haven't since around 2018 when the yellow logo cards came out with a few figures from Solo and the original trilogy. Hasbro really lost me when as a lifelong collector, I couldn't get Jabba's sail barge despite being willing to fork out the $500 USD price tag all because I live in Australia. Hasbro didn't take orders from Australia for the sail barge. So now I just look out for bargains on eBay and buy vintage or modern figures at decent prices. I'm at a point now were I've amassed a collection that it feels like its almost complete anyway. No regrets whatsoever.

Another collector said that “location” is another hardship to deal with. He lives in an area where vintage toy shops are non existent and I think everyone, including myself, can’t go to a modern toy shop to find the toys that are even supposed to be currently released. I would love to find an ahsoka tano black series on the shelf, but have never seen her. Instead I have to preorder at a “reasonable” price just so I don’t have to buy it for 4 times the amount on a resellers website or on eBay. So I think I understand where you are coming from, but being a new collector, I am still learning the ins and outs of vintage and modern collecting, so I’m grateful that I can read your comments and learn from you. Thanks for taking the time to watch and also offering your thoughts on the matter my friend

I collect Neca figures. Thundercats Ultimates. Star Wars- both Black & TVC .Marvel Legends and MOTU origins & Revelations currently. I have NO SPACE left to display. I have not had a Vacation in 20 years and go without new clothes home improvements and trips to the theatre/cinema. I never eat in restaurants or get take out and I don't even own a car now. I feel like a slave to the toy companies and I have sacrificed a life for my hobby. My therapist told me I am compensating for an abusive childhood and a childhood of poverty and emotional neglect. I have a house full of collectibles and zero social life. My rent and bills get paid but anything else is all on toys. Saddest part is I am not alone..there are thousands of middle aged men like me in the same fix.

Hey Darren thanks for sharing your story and I am glad that you have a professional to talk to. I hope nothing but the best for you brother. And again, thank you for sharing your story with us. I know that means a lot to me and the toy community.

I have stopped collecting because I need other stuff and I just want to take a brake from it and of course everything is going up as well so that’s the over reason why I stopped collecting it is getting harder to collecting Star Wars figures

Hey Jonathan! It’s healthy to take breaks. I just came back from a toy convention and the prices on some figures made my jaw drop! Thanks for watching my friend!

I would agree with a lot of things you said. I have sold off quite a bit of my slot car collection in order to fund finishing off my loose vintage Kenner Star Wars collection. Unlike yourself, I started collecting when I was 10 years old in 1978 and have been picking stuff up here and there over the last 40 years. I am now down to five pieces. I like to collect loose toys so I can share them with my son, who also is an avid Star Wars toy collector. I have limited myself to just the retro collection that Hasbro has produced. This is for a number of reasons: space, budget, continuity and compatibility. I have even modified/customized modern Hasbro ships with pegs so that way they are compatible with the Vintage Kenner line. Feel free to check out my channel, if you have the interest.

Thanks CVC! I just subbed to your channel and cant wait to binge your content! Any channels that talk about vintage, I am a huge fan of! I am in awe that you started collecting so many years ago. I wish I had been more aware of collecting the Kenner pieces at least back in the 90s. And thats great that you share this with your son. I have barely been getting my little ones into star wars but will let them find it on their own to see how their experience is. Thanks for watching my friend, MYFBWY

Truthfully I don't know how any of you can afford it looking at the prices of stuff it's outrageous I lost everything when I was a kid due to a house fire and my parents couldn't afford to replace the stuff back then and it was much much cheaper there's no way I can be a collector Star Wars vehicles figures and have a merchandise with these prices it's just not possible

Hey Bob! Yes I agree that the prices are high even if trends are seeing some things come down.

Whatever you do, stop collecting. If this were 40 years ago, stop smoking. Live life, let go. Says the man doing his best to quit collecting. It's a waste of life and space!
