In this video I'll discuss a rider with almost no skills, yet, he managed to pass a beginner course and get a motorcycle license. And I'll explain why he has no skills and how to correct this problem.

Coaches preached FRICTION ZONE for two days straight at the MSF course I took this past summer in Maine. Great course in which I learned a lot and continued to practice everything I learned afterwards. Jerry is a badass period and I will always stay tuned into his life saving teaching. I learned to ride a 250cc and made my way up the cc ladder until I was ready for the Harley. By that time, I was pretty darn good, not bragging or anything.

"Go big or go home" is not a good rule of thumb for a newly minted rider buying their first motorcycle. A mistake too many new riders make and I see a lot where I am. That guy who came from up north will lose everything he's learned and any inkling of progress if he doesn't go home and practice. He needs to find a "Ride Like a Pro" course where he lives or something like that. I'm a police motor trained rider and have been riding 26 years and I still practice the stuff Jerry shows and more advanced stuff too. Master the basics and maintain them, IMPORTANT.

I was in this class on the Blu on White ultra, I gained about 80 percent confidence but in the last week, I told Jerry that my biggest fear is loss of traction and he explained to me that I will NOT lose traction, since then, I believe so much in what Jerry teaches that I went out knowing I will NOT lose traction and my confidence level went up about another 15% and I'm scraping my floor boards now and loving the way his techniques are working for me. I'll be taking a refresher course. Thank you so much Jerry Palladino.

Why would you sell a big motorcycle if the customer has no experience? I’m glad our dealership don’t do that. I tried to buy a ultra too but they talked me into buying a street bob and I’m so glad they did. Now I ride a street glide special but I keep practicing my slow speed ever time I go out.

Some dealers see dollar signs and or the sales guy needs that commission to make ends meet. They don't care you don't know how to handle a 900lbs bike. A good salesman will ask all the right questions to get you on a bike that will fit you for now and maybe later when you can ride after gaining some above riding skills you can purchase a heavy touring bike.

Unfortunately, I see an awful lot of "Old Guys" who have ZERO concept of how to ride. It's absolutely terrifying to think that these guys are acutally out on the road with these big touring bikes, thinking that they know what the hell they are doing... I'm 70, been riding for 60 Plus years and I can tell anyone willing to listen that I learned so much from the RIDE LIKE A PRO course (book, DVD's etc) than I would have imagined. I was happy that I was doing a lot right, and I was able to correct some bad habits that I had developed over the years. I ride ALL YEAR LONG (Here in New York) and believe me, the $85.00 is a small price to pay to keep you sharp (with continual practice) and keep you alive.. DON'T BE A DOOFUS! Get the damn course and impress the folks at the old age home... (Or the young bucks who think they know something.)...

I have been riding now for 16 years and watch every video from Jerry! I ride a Goldwing and practice in parking lots as often as I can. I have yet to get down to 18 feet on the Wing but I know it's the fear factor. I took the class offered out of Houston (Sugarland) and that helped! Thank you Jerry for the training videos! I have them all with exception to the new one recently released. I also have 26 MSF cones I use to help practice.

You might expect a naive kid to get a monster hog or a turbo zipsplat as a first bike, but not a grown man. He knows better than to do that. Whoever you are, man, I hope you'll park that Ultra until you've spent some quality time with a much smaller bike. There's nothing nerdy about sharpening your skills with a small bike, but crashing an Ultra will never be cool.

I dont understand people like this. I started riding at 7 yrs old. I can say I had an awesome friend that explained things to me. I am now 56. I have a 1998 FLSTS I bought new. Traded my ultra for it. This springer fits me like a glove. Love it.

When I went through the MSF, I'm sure they explained the friction zone, but I didn't fully understand it. We all learn differently.

Oh they explain the friction zone alright. But the problem is since they use such small bikes. a rider cam go thru all the exercises with the clutch fully engaged. That means the student never masters using the friction properly. Then they buy a middle weight or heavy weight, and they then, better know how to use that friction zone.

That's the problem, starting out on an Ultra when you should spend a lot of time on a light 250/ 400/500 cc bike and spend time in a large parking lot off hours on a Sunday circling left,right & figure 8 ing around. Don't know if they do it anymore but I had to do this for my NYS road test on a Honda 200cc bike. Need to experience the light bikes before you ride the big heavy ones.

our roads are so narrow it dont matter if he learned on a grom and then got on an ultra, you dont need to do u turns on a two lane, just stop and slowly turn around.He is doing just fine,after few years he will get used to it and if he doesnt he doesnt, he can still ride,just gotta be careful on maneuvers

That is 100% why I took the course at Harley because you get to learn on a 500cc instead of a 250 or smaller. Granted, I'm still very much a beginner with so much to learn, but it gave me the confidence to buy a 1200 for my first bike. I can't imagine thinking I could ride a bagger straight away! My sportster 72 was intimidating enough! lol. Best of luck to that guy though, for real. Stay safe out there ya'll!

I bought my 2018 iron 883 in 2018 new at 64 years old never rode a bike with a motor on it. I got it in Chicago Harley Davidson when they used to be in Glenview and I had him throw in the motorcycle class four days. Bikes they supplied were the Harley Davidson 500 that ugly bike. But I’ve been watching your courses I’ve been watching other motorcycle shows guy from Texas it’s in his garage it’s good too. I never ride on the expressway, during rush hour rain or at night and I never have an adult cocktail before I go ride my bike my car too. I put 8500 miles on it so far but I tell you those little sportsters do beat the hell I have an old body like mine I’m 68 now. I just drive local anything over two hours beats the tar out of a button on a sportster.

I bought my first ever bike after msf class, it is a low rider s, I was worried but I was careful with lots of parking lot practice and now I am pretty comfortable with it. I also test rode street glide recently and not much problem. lots of youtube and practice!!

If the MSF had this standard, no one would ever get their endorsement. 90+% of new riders are much better than this example. Most new riders understand they are safe enough for their endorsement, but need more work before they ride in regular traffic.

Your website indicates that your class will not earn a rider their endorsement and that the rider should have 1,500 miles under their belt before taking your class. Maybe in addition to a lack of riding skills, they also have a lack of reading skills.

BTW, a friend of mine is just getting back on a bike after a few years in cages. He stopped in this area for a couple of weeks on his way to snowbird in Arizona, so we're doing some riding together, and I notice that his major issue is being rusty and working on remembering what he used to know. He doesn't want to take a course because of his pride, and because he needs brush-up and practice, not initial instruction. I wonder if there would be demand for a "Welcome Back" course for riders who don't want to embarrass themselves in front of younger folks (might be perfect for your guy in the Land of AZ), and if there is anything different to spend the time on than in a normal course.

Here's the truth. If a rider has never had any training, they are riding on instinct. And when it comes to riding skillfully, it's the opposite of your instincts. So, your friend never had technique before, and now he's just trying to get back to being the unskilled rider he was before. He needs the RLAP course, not some special course for people who knew nothing before and want to get back to being the unskilled rider he was before. They may sound harsh, but it's the facts. If pride is keeping him from going to my course, ask him to make a simple u-turn on a side street. When he fails at that, ask him what he's going to do when a car violates his right of way at 50 mph.

I want to do the police basic course by me but I need the fuckin endorsement and I’ve been riding dirty since my 20s. Now I actually want that license but ride a big ass road king and the dmv course is as difficult to do on bikes like ours as those advanced rider courses. They hand out endorsements to any Tom Jane or dick on a 250 at the MSF but my 22’ u turn and 12’ cone weave on a 840lb bike just isn’t gonna cut it to get a licsene. Gonna prob just do what everyone does and borrow a 250 rebel frlm someone to take the test which is designed either for motormen or scooters

I've had it since 2014.. but I've been riding my whole life on crotch rockets ... then I sold them before I killed myself back in the day and got my first harley, 1998 Dyna convertible. Had 5 of those then got the bagger. Its a whole different machine than those little bikes as tou know. I just kept practicing and finally got the feel of it. Just curious, motorman ever strongly advise some folks - “Do not ride any motorcycles on the public roadways because your a safety concern to yourself and the public”? You want to ride and that’s fine, but your going to need a lot of training. If you do not yield to my advise - you’ve greatly increase your chances of killing yourself or someone else. Trailer that bike to a training facility till you have “X” amount of hours in that seat. I know if I was serious about learning a new skill, I don’t make excuses of “why” I can’t. This individual isn’t putting out 150% effort. This riders best bet, is to absolutely forget everything he’s learned up to this point and completely retain from the beginning. This gentleman may need training wheels, but his ego is going to get the best of him. The male ego can be very dangerous to oneself.

I tell people the way it is. If they suck, they should go back to the beginner course, then buy a 250 cc bike and practice what they learned at that course then come back to me. Or, take some one on one training with me where I start them on a bicycle if need be. Many times I'll do that for free if I see they have determination. Few people ever take that offer or my advice on what they need to do. Either they quit riding or more likely, they continue riding badly until they crash.

@@motorman857 in my own humble opinion, nobody is experts at anything. The only true expert, is god. Now are you able to be a really well student, sure. But any human claiming to be expert, no so much. I observe the same things motorman goes through when training individuals in trucking. I have never experienced an “expert” in trucking. I careless what kind of trucking you’ve done or if your 1 of these individuals whom has driven trucks for the last 100 years. Your going to learn something new everyday. At that point, your still a student and if you think your better then that truck, it’ll hand your your backside very quick like. Slowly, smoothly, gently makes for a humble student operator.

Poor guy. How can you dump a sporty? I get off my Valkyrie Insterstate and my sporty is like a bicycle in weight. 550 lbs is nothing. The sporty is so nimble. Same with my shadow 1100 ace. Maybe he should sell his big Harley.

It depends on your size and experience! I'm 5'2" 95lbs a tiny woman and I ride a sportster. It doesn't feel as giant as it used too. If you are a new rider and/ or little a Sportster isn't a beginner bike. I started on a dirt bike then a Honda Rebel 250 then to my Sportster. I've come a long way but I try to ride everyday and practice. I think men are more prone to buying too big of a first bike because they are over confident or afraid they will look less than if they get a small bike to learn on. 🙄🤷‍♀️ I had a ball learning to ride on my smaller bikes. They are not nearly as intimidating as my Sportster was. I hope to get a softail next year as my Sportster hurts my back. I do adore that bike even if it's uncomfortable.😁

Since nobody ever actually rides a rebel 250 or a grom (which is what the dmv test is clearly designed for unless you’re very skilled at low speed operation .. which all of us are working on daily) But anyway.. do u think MSF courses should introduce riders to real bikes for those that are thinking they’re gonna go from a scooter to a HD ultra or SG or something? U got ppl getting handed they’re endorsement left and right and then go buy a ultra ans can’t even stop on a rea bike

I think they should have at least some middle weight bikes at the class and after the 1st day of training on the small bike, put them on the mid size. If the can't ride the mid size but pass on the small bike, they should be limited to a small bike only, license for a year, then be re-tested on the bigger bike.

@@superdon1chw oh ok, well i got some problems too, i think im just slower than others to process some stuff and on another end im better at stuff then others.1 thing i learned is dont get caught up on what the "smarter" ones command you to do, all these smart people make more mistakes than you but nobody just admits it, if you know you can do it then dont listen to these idiots.Only person i will liaten to is my mom and even she can tell me wrong stuff. I was one of the two in class who almost failed the written test- i did ok on riding test but you know how these written questions can be plain retarted and i told them that these answers dont make any sense, guy just wanted me to tell the right answer and blamed my misunderatanding on my language barrier cause english isnt my firat language. After that the instructors told me that back around 2017-18 they changed the tests to make them harder and since then they been failing much more people every class. Keep riding,slow maneuvers are hard no matter what, i been riding for like 5 years and still hate them but it doesnt matter

@@mike8748 I went for the ERC 4 years after I got my motorcycle license I found a guy similar to motor man and strictly did the exercise day after day until I was ready to get it but wondered if I was missing out so this MSF instructor had a similar experience with 1 guy who kept fixating and vering off course on a roadking and lost his side box earlier in the day at the end he almost t bones me in "the box" I had to go and create a emergency exit and never forgotten it 11 years ago

Here's the good news. I just spoke with him on the phone and though he lives in PA. He's coming back here in December for a one on one lesson and then another 4 hour class. Since he's not a quitter, I believe I can turn him around. Since he's up north, it's too cold to ride up there. I've turned around much much worse than him. Here's an example. @@motorman857 That was a pretty impressive transformation for the woman rider. Gives pause for hope for the guy from PA. If I were you, with him I'd start with teaching him how to stop his motorcycle before moving on to one lane u-eez.
