Ive been a roofer 33 years. I always preach quality over speed. Not only does speed sacrifice quality but if you want to be a roofer for years to come, pace yourself men. Im 56 and still getting it done on the roof. My reputation has carried me to the point that i dont even advertise to the general public. I moved into roofing only for realtors. They know what they want and are willing to pay top dollar for quality work. I have videos on yt showing the same issues on roofs i come across. We all have to start out roofing somewhere, but if you dont know what you are doing dont start out contracting roofs, start at the bottom and learn from the old timers. I spent 2 years bucking shingles up a ladder b4 i ever laid my first shingle( which i put on upside down ). I had a patient boss and learned from one of the best. Do quality work men!

Thanks same here! I started Roofing 17 years ago for one of the best roofing companies in town. I learned quality, brand, and reputation are key. Just started this company three years ago. Started with nothing and took three years to get where I am. It was a long road to build up the good reviews. I haven't paid anything on advertising outside of shirts business cards and yard signs. Word of mouth and Google reviews have been my bread and butter. I try not to focus on being the best price. If you focus on that you can only go so low. Building the brand to the point that customers are willing to pay for it, because they know I'll be around if there is ever a problem and more importantly will take care of it! Then you don't need to focus on quantity. Thanks for sharing your story.

The use of cheap untrained sub contractors is rampant in our industry. Roofs like this are the reason roofing continues to lead the way in litigation cases. Great informative video even for a contractor of over 20 years. Good call on not putting your name on a roof of this size, pitch and unfinished problems. Rarely do I bump into jobs like these but they are out there and can cost dearly to homeowners who have no clue. The roof is the only protection a family has to protect themselves from everything else out there. I believe homeowners insurance could or may cover losses like this with a contractor negligence claim. There may be a subjugated claim against the prior contractor if they can prove the loss and reason for a full replacement. Hopefully they will find a way for coverage if not this is a big lesson learned and total loss.

I don’t understand why insurance companies, when they send your home insurance renewal policy to you they don’t put an insert in the envelope saying that if you hire a contractor to do work on your house and they are not insured, and something goes wrong your insurance won’t cover you. It’s so simple. Then homeowners would be asking for a copy of license and insurance. Also if a cash guy with no insurance is working on your property and gets hurt he sues you. People just get blinded by the cheap price.
@metro143
@metro143 2 жыл бұрын
First of all, you may want to reconsider asking insurance companies to do anything. Sometimes they are part of the problem. They also look for the lowest bids to do repairs. My EX-insurance company sent a inspector out to inspect my roof without my knowledge or consent. I installed my own roof twenty two years ago. No problems or leaks. ( I use to be a roofer many years ago) I was anticipating replacing the roof within the next 5 years just due to the age of the shingles. However, the insurance inspector wrote in the report that the roof was in catastrophic condition and needed replacement immediately or they would cancel my insurance policy. The inspector wrote in the report that the shingles were curling and the top shingle caps were coming off. I also had two nail pops that pushed two shingles up. I went up on my roof and nailed the two nail pops back down and applied a small amount of roofing cement to make it look it was repaired. I also had to explain that I had a COBRA roof vent system that made the edge of shingles look like they were sticking up. (The inspector didn't know what the Cobra venting system was). The insurance company actually cancelled my policy and eventually reinstated it after I took photos of the roof cement that I deliberately smeared on the shingle to make it look like something was done. I then replaced my insurance company. Anyway. the roof lasted three more years before I replaced it. There was no curling as the inspector reported. There was minimum granular loss and I believe that the shingles would have lasted another five years. Think about it, if the insurance companies can get you to replace your roof before the life expectancy. They will never have a loss. ( To this day I have never made a homeowners claim ) However, I see that many insurance companies are paying out large sums of money for wind and hail damage to roofs that have already passed the life expectancy of the shingle. I also want to tell you that when my policy was time to renew. I simply replaced it with a different insurance company. The old insurance company reported me to the credit bureau to have me pay for the next years policy because I didn't cancel my old policy after they dropped me two months before. The credit bureau sided with me and said the insurance company had no basis to ask me because I had another insurance policy in place before the old policy expired. Keep thinking that the insurance companies will do the right thing.

I’m small potatoes, but all the big established “reputable” companies I have to compete with have this level of craftsmanship. They do finish the job of course, but the quality looks the same. They all eat deductibles, they all use subs to install, their sales reps get a one week roofing class at best and go out lying to consumers. This day in age, the way the roofing industry is, I say your SOL as an ordinary consumer to find a good roofer. All I can suggest is the same as you, vet your contractor. Be open to a local small company you’re not familiar with and check them out, they might have a business model like mine that’s about quality over being the lowest bid. Packages get opened a certain way so they don't have to flip and flop shingles around, they distribute them along a pattern so they're not tripping over shingles, or running out of them, they're not wasting trips up and down the ladder, not wasting time fixing things that they could have done right the first time - they plan their work, and work their plan.

It's one thing to have the odd nail raised, but steady streams of them, no tar, reusing old flashing, and then leaving supplies on top of the roof and not properly finishing the edges just shows how lack of a fuck they gave. Worried about getting paid and not their reputation or the quality of life the family would have in that home. A properly installed roof can last 20-30+ years, but not getting 1 out of a fresh install is crazy.

... So, because I'm looking into building my own (small) home on my own (small) piece of property, I've been looking this stuff up for research. I'm not a roofer. I'll never claim to be one. I've 'installed' exactly two very small, extremely uncomplicated rooves in my life, both when I was a kid on the farm. No fancy corners, not even any peak to the roof, shallow pitch, all 'shed style'. My dad laid the first course to show me how and I took over. This was some thirty-odd years ago. Even I, when you pointed the camera at that roof, said "Ho-lee-- that's jacked up!"

Good video. I was a roofer for many years. I learned from my Dad who was a good old time roofer. I never recalled him returning to repair a roof that he installed. ( Not saying he never did. I just never remembering him having to return to a job. ) His philosophy was properly laying out the roof first. He would chalk his lines first. figure out if he needed to start off with a shorter shingle pattern so that when he got to the other end of the roof, he didn't have a short shingle to end with. He took his time. You also need to understand how to properly flash your roof. This was his specialty However it is easy to see how screwed up some so called contractors are. They don't lay out the roof first. They don't know how to properly flash. they don't pay attention to details. I think in this case the contractor was either a salesman with a home improvement license or ether didn't know how to install it and hired inexperience people for cheap labor.

My dad and I were GC's when he was still alive and his favorite thing to tell me was "If you have to do it twice you did it the first time for free." While I know from experience there is more to it then that, it's still a true principle for contractors to follow. That and the chances of repeat business is close to 0%. I learned quickly to ask him questions because when I screwed up, and what teenager doesn't, it came out of my pay. A few times I owed dad money, but I learned several lessons that I still follow to this day. The original "roofing" guy was not a tradesman, he was a KZbin trained scammer. Roofing is one of those few things you can't pay me enough to do anymore. It takes talent and a lot of skill to do a proper job like this one. He had nether.

I realize this is a few years old but to answer your question, if you publish their name they could sue for defamation. For someone to win a defamation case they have to prove you knowingly spread lies about them as a fact, among other things. Good defenses to defamation are truth and opinion. In this specific video you show and discuss the evidence and provide professional opinions, in many states if they tried to sue for defamation over this video you'd probably win and get your attorney fees covered. As a rental property owner, the homeowner should go after the contractor hard. The first stop (insurance or not) would be small claims court with this video as exhibit A. After winning I would place liens on the businesses assets (to prevent them from selling everything off), get a writ of garnishment (go after their bank accounts) and finally a writ of execution (sell their assets).
