I see patients making the same mistakes with their skin care over and over. Today I decided to pull together a list of the most common skincare mistakes I see from them, covering a wide range of dermatological issues. We discuss things like popping pimples, charcoal masks, skincare trends, hydration, moisturizer, shaving, alcohol based products, sweat, pore health, sunscreen and SPF, exfoliating scrubs, and so much more. Have you made any of these skin care mistakes, or maybe you’ve found a treatment plan that works right for you? Let me know in the comments!
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

I can attest to the hot shower part. Once I started taking more cold showers, I noticed a lot of improvement in my skin. That and not drying my face with anything after washing it.... not a towel, dedicated face cloth etc. I just air dry and my face texture has remained very smooth ever since.

I've had cystic acne along my chin and just under my nose that didn't clear up (almost) completely until menopause. I was looking through some old pictures recently and realized I've had the same exact same zit showing up in the same exact place in various states of inflammation ... FOR YEARS. I think whenever I did squeeze it - I did exercise some restraint over the years- it pushed some of that sebum gunk down deeper into the follicle, and that's what kept resurfacing every few months. Upon this realization, instead of squeezing, I doused it with salicylic acid a couple times a day for 2-3 months until the bump finally receded. Finally it's healed for good. Longest zit ever.
@laurao3274
@laurao3274 Жыл бұрын
I've been trying to convince my husband that he needs to stop messing with his skin. When he was a teenager, his mother taught him how to "care for" his acne prone skin, by lancing or popping the zit, then following up with hydrogen peroxide. Since his mother was the one who taught him this, and because he's been doing it this long, nothing I say will convince him that he's actually harming his skin. I swear, it's like an obsession with him. When I have a zit, he desperately tries to convince me to pop it. It's like it physically pains him to see a zit that is unmaimed. And yes, if you're wondering, he has many acne scars.
@laurao3274
@laurao3274 Жыл бұрын
I had also been trying to get him to stop splashing hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol on everything. We have clean, running water and soap. But I've given up on that one. I figure it isn't ideal, but at least he isn't really harming anything with that.

And the first time I put it on... it BURNED! LIKE HELL!! It just hurt so much that I had to take it off right away. Then I tried again later after a shower and I realised that the moisteriser I got worked better if I put it on damp skin rather than when I was dry and it worked and the redness and soreness reduced. Dermatologist: stay out of the sun and use sunblocker even on cloudy days Other doctors: you have low vitamin d you should go out and expose your skin to the sun more often Psychologist: sun can be a natural mood elevator Me:????
@SirMaddaMMetzo
@SirMaddaMMetzo 2 жыл бұрын
I have looked into this again and again and the advice I am following now is: As someone who is usually very pale, I put sunblocker on when I know I will be outside in the sun for more like 15 minutes. So for example when I only go to work and then back home later, I don't put on sunblocker but instead try to let the sun get on as much skin possible at the same time, so it can produce the vitamin D. If I'm leaving the house for longer, then I either apply sunblocker before I go or I'll take it with me to put it on after 15 minutes and also try to cover a bit more of my skin and also using a hat. You should look up for the place where you live at what hour the sun comes in at a good angle for your skin to produce vitamin D (for my country for example it's said that between 11 am and 5pm is a good time, before and after that the the angle too flat and the part of the light that is needed for the production would be reflected by the atmosphere). Also different skin color needs different exposure time. Someone with darker skin than me needs like 20-30 minutes of sun on their skin without blockers to get the same amount of vitamin D. Also: The lighter your skin is, the shorter you can stay in the sun even with sunscreen. I think I read about a formula to calculate that... Don't remember it, since I don't stay out in the sun very long because I'm not feeling great because of the heat.

@@Susirajantakaa Which means that you should figure out what type of skin you have and then research brands that make products that are designed for your skin texture and needs. Instead of just buying whatever Dr Mike tells you to buy because it works for him. Trying out different products to find one suitable for you is only useful when you do research before hand to know what you need and what brands sell a product with ingredients proven to help with your skin type. Just randomly buying stuff to try it and see if it works will statistically speaking almost never lead to the exact right product for you. Doing your research and being informed on the things you require from a product will give you a higher chance of finding something that works for you.

"keeping a wound covered and allowing it to stay moist is shown to make it heal better" Ha! Take that mom and grandma! I told you that keeping my wounds covered with bandages and band-aids worked better than letting it exposed!! I told you!!! Edit: I don't need sunscreen if I don't get out. Why bother with protecting my skin again sunlight when I can just avoid it altogether.

Unfortunately I have as little noticed in myself why it was better for me to leave my small curs and such not covered. Especially on my hands. My hands sweat a lot, and I could never clean my wounds well enough that they wouldn't get infected if I covered them. But they would never get infected if I left them uncovered. Recently I managed to cut my finger in a way that bothered me while useing my hands and I tried to cover it just so it wouldn't get in my way too much. The bandage literally fell of in 5 minutes because of how much my hands sweat.

@@doraspoljar697 i can attest to it, small cuts on the hands are too much of a hassle to keep bandaged, they're healed in a week anyways so what's the point

I’ve actually never heard the advice that you should get your skin checked regularly if you’ve had many sunburns in the past. I don’t have a single mole on my body and don’t have any family history so I’ve never been too worried about skin cancer, but I have gotten dozens of sunburns in my life (thank you Scandinavian genes). Guess I’ll be keeping an eye out now
