Does property that has plenty of water, benefit from s pecific water hole?

Hi David! I discuss that in many of my waterhole videos but the answer is YES, IF deer are bedding in dry bedding areas and it is dry on the way to their afternoon food. For example, we have water all over in the bottoms, but have LOTS of waterholes up top. It would be out of the way for deer to hit the water below in terms of food and bedding so they are a great fit. This is why folks should never add water to a hunting parcel unless it directly relates to the deer movements they are trying to make.

Hi Tom I wish we could...it's just not something we were able to work out with UPS and Canada. I know Wes and Jen worked very hard at it for several months and it just doesn't work in the end...for the seed anyways. Thanks for asking and we apologize!

I put one in two years ago near a ladder stand. During bow season no real luck. Rifle season I moved 100-125 yards away and like clock work 8:30 poof I’m walked a mature 8 sneaking in for a drink. Watched him look straight at the climber through my scope before I dropped him while he stood calmly at the little spring fed water hole Haha. Ladder stand used to be a hot spot. Need to reevaluate and maybe move it. But he never knew what hit him never suspected any threat that far away plus I was able to get out on a point and let the wind carry all my scent the opposite direction he came from. Ironically my daughter had just sneaked through from his direction 5 minutes earlier on the way to her stand. Lol.

I dug mine into the ground about 25 yards off my 1/3 acre food plot in the woods. Main reason is we have a main deer thoroughfare coming into the food plot from the north, and that’s where we have our water tank at, inside the wood line. It’s a good setup, the deer stop at the water on the way to the food plot, or coming from it. It helps being in a very hilly area where water is 3/4 of a mile away down the hill in the valley.

Also I don’t know how many here also hunt by smell but my father taught me how said it was something he learned in the Korean War? Who knows but it works I knew that buck was coming way before he showed himself.

Did I miss how FAR from a food plot? Is 40 yards far enough? It's also 40 yards from a main travel lane with cover but open for bow shots which is 30 yards away.

As long as you can see mature bucks visiting during the day...40 yards is a good distance...

Hi Nick! I do not... completely unnecessary as they are a part of any natural waterhole. Also I don't like to add the chemical to what the deer drink. If I believed in it...we would sell it 😊

I've read and heard that creating a deer waterhole could also create an EHD risk as the ground around the water hole will eventually be bare dirt. I was wondering if spreading round stones all around the waterhole could reduce this risk? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Hi Kevin! The midge actually needs dry, cracking mud...not just dirt. I recommend a grass mixture that is for high traffic...people and deer. We have a blend in r call our Green Max Traffic Blend designed to hold soil on trails and waterhole edges: www.whswildlifeblends.com/store/green-max-traffic-blend However, without dry cracking mud around a waterhole, you lose the ingredients that the EHD midge n rdd to propagate...whether dirt or not

I put in a 300 gallon water hole at the beginning of May along a travel corridor in the woods. I had to clear a path to get the excavator in to dig the hole. One challenge I encountered is standing water in the hole. I dropped the Rubbermaid tank in along with a concrete block to help hold the critter stick. I noticed it seemed buoyant when I jumped in to remove a big chunk of clay while backfilling around the tank. It rained that night & popped the tank up about 6". Will it sink as it fills or is it screwed?

I think the point you are making is don't put the water near danger areas like food plots, so the waterhole doesn't lose its allure. So its okay to place a waterhole amongst oak or fruit trees mixed with other hardwoods as long as it is back in the cover? Thank you for the great insights.

If I have a 1/2 acre freshwater pond on the property, but it’s in open space. Do I still set a waterhole in the woods on the edge of the saltwater marsh?

Would a watering hole be good on a downward elevation change in the woods running parallel on a main trail off a 3/4 acre food plot?
@RushOutdoors

Great info on water, and valuable to help teach line of movement Jeff It works really well with elevation change which you know. I do this also on what I call levels on my place as I have 400 ft of elevation change SW Wisco. Its awesome for holding and seeing different bucks on different levels. Thanks for great info have a great morning.
