...What? I think you mean that blind people smile too, and therefor it isn't empathy? The people who has been blind since birth can't smile unless they are laughing, they have to learn how to smile without pure emotion. This just proves that it's based on empathy, because they will smile (naturally) when, let's say, a person sounds happy, and therefor they smile because the other person seem happy. You gotta realize that a smile is just a smile, it's a facial expression that we copy because of empathy. Without empathy you wouldn't have the urge to smile because there would be nothing to it, just a person smiling.

How do you type?
@blackberrybunny9 жыл бұрын
Isaiah Robert Hi Isaiah, I guess what you are asking is how did I learn to type? It was just as difficult for me as a sighted person, because NO ONE was allowed to look at their keyboard either way! It took me and the other students 2 years of high school to get up to about 85 words per minute. I learned where they keys were with the help of our teacher; together, we made little Braille stickers for each key. It was easy for me to feel the keys. In fact, this gave me an advantage over the other students. Since we were not allowed to look at the keys, they had no idea if they were about to hit the wrong key or not, whereas I could feel which key I was on! Hahah! And while they looked and copied text out of their books, the state of Alabama got me special tapes to listen to-- so all I had to do was type what was being dictated to me. Other students would later on take a couple of months out of the year just to learn how to do diction, and here again, I already had the upper hand. The only problem I had was, I couldn't see my paper I typed to review it! But it didn't matter. This was a long time ago, in the mid 80's. All of that stuff I learned then, about how to indent paragraphs and make cc: notes on papers is now pretty much extinct, since we now have texting and computers. Computers were just coming into being then, I used an Apple IIe computer. I really couldn't do anything with it without the help of another student. The screen only had green text! There was no Internet. It was very primitive!! Nowadays, thanks to Apple and some awesome software companies, our iPhones are made easily accessible to the blind! Our phones talk to us and guide us through the apps. It's very advanced and wonderful.
@Irn4249 жыл бұрын
Molly A. Block thanks for a serious response! My school has computer keyboards with braille on them, I think its neat :)
@blackberrybunny9 жыл бұрын
Isaiah Robert It IS neat; it's like knowing a REAL secret code in real life, that you read with your FINGERTIPS! How freakin' awesome IS that?!! VERY!! You can learn the Braille alphabet easily. It's called "Grade 1 Braille." After that, you learn "Grade 2 Braille" where a Braille dot symbol is used to represent an entire common word, not just a letter of the alphabet...words such as "and," "but," "you," etc. And THEN you learn numbers and math, and that math is called "Nemeth Code." See? It really IS a code! Also, in case you are interested, when you read Braille, on a page, you use both hands on the page. You place both hands at the beginning of the line of Braille, and slide them both together over the line, but you only use your left hand for the first half of the line, then when you reach the midway point, your right hand takes over, finishing the line, while you at the same time position your left hand over the NEXT line below. It's so you can read faster and not lose your place. I know in a lot of movies, well, they used to do it this way, they would show a 'blind' person reading a whole page with only one hand, usually their right, and this is very very incorrect. Braille is very cool-- and anyone sighted can learn Grade 1 Braille, the alphabet, with ease. "Writing" Braille, on the other hand, is an entire different challenge. If you don't have a special typewriter that punches Braille dots, you use a 'slate and stylus' which is a flat metal stencil type of thing, and a stylus, which is a pointed hand held thing that pushes holes into special thick Braille paper. The magical thing about writing Braille this way is that you must write everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, completely backwards! That way, when you flip the paper over to read it, it is 'right-side up.' If you use the special Braille typewriter (not anything like a traditional typewriter), you write it as you would on a regular typewriter. Writing Braille yourself with a slate and stylus is a real challenge and requires a LOT of thinking! There is no easy way to 'erase' a Braille dot once you've made it. You can try to "rub'" it back down, but blind people have fingertips that can feel even the slightest bump. We can see where mistakes were made....... Sorry this was long, I just thought you or others might be interested in knowing how this works. :-)
@junbh29 жыл бұрын
+Molly A. Block I've tried to write braille with a slate and stylus and I don't think it's that hard. You don't write backwards, you write in the same order just from right to left instead of left to right. Though not being able to erase was hard. And not being able to easily check the word you just wrote. But the supposed 'backwards' thing was really not a big deal at all... I don't know why people say that unless because it makes it sound cool?

Especially the chalk and getting a sticky substance like Fluffernutter/maple syrup/glue/BBQ sauce on my fingers. I HATE that thing with chocolate bars! ... How does "Alex" tell you about quotations, exclamations, and other punctuation in sentences?

I can totally relate to so much of this, the glue residue included. Also, sitting somewhere someone else just sat is uncomfortable for me. It isn't so much with hard seats, though.

Speaking of public bathrooms, here's a (possibly too personal) question for you. How do you aim when you pee in a public bathroom? I'm sure in your own bathroom, you know exactly the height and distance of your toilet, so that's no problem. But when going to a bathroom you've never been to before, do you just avoid the urinals and use a stall/toilet to be safe? And if so, do you bend down and feel exactly where the toilet is to make sure you hit the inside of the bowl? Or do you just play it safe and sit down to pee?

He probably just sits down to urinate.

PockASqueeno I like to pretend to be blind and pee in sinks in public bathrooms
@anniepark66948 жыл бұрын
PockASqueeno I'd like to know that myself. I have a blind friend who sits down to pee, but I've also heard that a guy can like prop his legs against it, and that can help aim, if I'm understanding this correctly.

Hey Tommy, so this is a bit of an odd question. Do you have any concept of inherent senses, such as, instinctively being able to touch your fingertips without your eyes? Are there things that you have developed over the years that have become second nature to you, so much so that you don't even need to think about them when you do them? While all of us can put a fork in our mouth without having to see it, if us sighted folk were to close our eyes, there would be so many things that we wouldn't be able to do. I was wondering if you are even aware of instances where things are second-nature to you, or if the fact that you've been doing them since birth has blurred that line, and you wouldn't even be able to tell? Sorry if this is worded poorly, I wasn't quite sure how to phrase it.
@CGlacia9 жыл бұрын
+TheErebusGaming Being able to touch your fingertips together has to do with an entirely different sense- proprioception, the ability to know where your body parts are in space. Assuming everything's in order neurologically, a person should, without much difficulty, be able to touch their fingertips together without actually seeing them.
@TheErebusGaming9 жыл бұрын
CGlacia Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I'm saying that all of us- regardless of sight- can do something like that. What I'm wondering is if he is aware of other things he has trained his body to do, similar to that, that the rest of us can't do, because we need our eyes.
