We don't know the resale value in five years. People think "Rolex", but remember you are paying nearly DOUBLE MSRP for the damn things. And if you bought a Panda Daytona last year you are down thirty odd percent. If you bought a Sub you are down about $1K or 10 percent. If you bought an Omega Seamaster you are just about breaking even.

A college professor noticed I was wearing a contemporary(at the time) Omega Seamaster Pro 2531.80 that i had spent a summer working to primarily put aside money to buy, and asked me what the difference between a watch and a timepiece was. I responded, “a decimal point on the price.” I later wrote a well regarded comparison (back in PMWF days) between it and a Seiko SKX781 “Orange Monster” where I pointed out the Omega was a nicer watch, but not enough that that Seiko didn’t knock it into a cocked hat when value was considered. I mostly collect mid-high solid gold vintage pieces these days, but doing it right in life is being happy, and looking down on anyone that manages that is probably proof that you don’t.

When you buy a watch, whether it is a $20 Timex or a $100K AP, it should make you happy. If it makes you happy, anyone else’s opinion shouldn’t matter. But if you put a picture on social media, you open yourself up to possible criticism. Someone, somewhere will not like your watch for whatever reason, no matter what. And unfortunately many don’t abide by the old adage “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” If you are buying watches strictly for getting approval and affirmation from others, you’re going to be disappointed. The one person you need to make happy is YOU.

Do I go around posting that every watch should be properly man-sized? No. Stop with this notion that a global watch brand made some grievous error when they made a 44mm dive watch. Mine are more on the conservative side of design. 3) Glycine watches are still high quality even though Invicta now owns them. Invicta is providing $$ backing & nothing more. Should we start bashing & disrespecting all the brands under the Swatch umbrella? These brands obviously couldn't survive on their own & had to be taken over by a company that makes plastic watches in order to survive. (NOTE: Bashing only hypothetical. I own some from those brands).

The reverse snobbery I think is a product of ignorance. Like the people saying that San Martin has equal quality to a Hamilton. Some even say they’re just as good as luxury watches. These people have never experienced higher tier watches so they don’t see the point of spending more and thus come to the conclusion that those with more expensive must be flexing

I'm not a fan of the "obligatory" wrist check that a lot of KZbinrs put during the intro bit. If I do a search for videos regarding a particular watch that I want to learn about, I want to see that watch in the videos I click on. I couldn't care less about the watch that the host happens to be wearing when the video was me. 😅

Just buy what you like (and can comfortably afford), and wear it for your own enjoyment. It’s really a very simple thing to do and needn’t be any more complicated than that. If you want to enter into a discussion with other human beings about your choices - or theirs - be prepared for disagreement and remember that we still (for now.) live in a world where differences of opinion are permissible. Life is more happily lived when you let go of being right.

The first point shows me that the watch game is only a hobby second. In music and auto and shooting circles (my only other expensive hobbies), resale value is delegated to people who don’t actually participate much. There are collectors, bless them, but they were never out using their gear. Let’s be honest: I’m just jealous I can’t afford to be in the hobby.

Hi Jenni. The only point I would like to comment on is the grey market Rolex. I have personally experienced awful treatment from official Rolex channels and vendors. They are the epitome of so and so's, snubs and bellends. So thank god for the parallel markets and secondary markets. What other options do I have? Beg to be placed on a list and wait for years to get my hand on something so common as a Rolex? It is just a matter of price, as Rolex have lost the plot and cannot deal with their own success. Some would say "you are crazy to pay bigger prices for this Rolex" but these are mainly Scottish tightfisted folk who shop 1 tomato, 1 cucumber and 1 carrot every other forthnight and bathe in the same water for 4 consecutive days to save money. If you are after a luxury watch you have to pay for it. It's part of the intrigue and the excitement to outbid someone else.I hope you get my point! Lovely work by the way. I am a fan of yours!

I can see how European and some American audiences would find the watch/weapon thing surprising. But it's really not. In Red America, carry a gun is totally normal. So for the status obsessed, posting an expensive weapon next to an expensive watch seems natural (but we can probably all agree conspicuous consumption is obtuse). I think what would surprise non-gun cultures, is the demographic crossovers in sub-gun cultures to other more mainstream cultures. Examples: People who are into precision shooting and car racing, people who are into german guns and watches, people who build furniture and also build custom firearms. I derive similar satisfaction from admiring the engineering of a mechanical watch and a well made firearm.

The worst trait is when people assume you are a “collector” when you have more than one watch. If you have a car and a truck, you aren’t a car “collector” you just have more than one for different uses. If you have more than one shirt, you aren’t a shirt “collector” so if I have a couple daily watches and one dress watch, I’m not a watch “collector”.

I have tons of problems with Rolex for the same reason I have problems witht Harley Davidson riders. HD riders think the only bike worth riding is a Harley and everything else is trash, most of them buy a Harley just because of the badge on it and in the end it is just old technology being used with little to no innovation and their value is being mostly propped by name alone and the reputation. With Rolex owners is similar but then add people that have absolutely no knowladge of watches , movements , nothing. they buy Rolexes out of just showing people they are rich . almost every Rolex owner I know in real life is a jerk that basically bought it to show off and if you show them anything not a Rolex they just shrug their shoulders and say "bro, you wasted your money, no one knows that brand " And my problem with Rolex is the way they treat their customers and make people basically beg for a watch and their ADs forcing clients to buy jewelry and other junk to be put on the top of the Queue. Yeah . I really don't like Rolex and most of it's owners.

I hate when people wearing a watch that costs as much as a small house will look at it after you've paid them a compliment about it and then say, eh, it's just a watch. No, it's not, it's a down payment on a bigger house, it's a couple of years at college, it's an extravagant crazy thing that you're wearing on your wrist, give it the respect it deserves, or wear a Casio. Which is a great brand.

In the US, it's weird to think of a knife as a _weapon_ . I carry a Microtech Ultratech OTF. Having a high-end knife to do knife stuff (open letters, boxes, blister packs, etc.) is very much analogous to having a luxury watch ostensibly to tell the time. Would a utility knife be better? Sure, but a cellphone is better for telling time than any watch. Mixing interests helps people discover common interests.

Got to admit I am in agreement with many of these. Wrist rolls and hand in pocket shots really boil my p*ss! 😁 I used to be into slightly larger watches but only 42-43 max.. and like a mug got rid of a lovely 34mm Air King for peanuts... Now I collect Military watches and a 1950's 32mm RCAF Waltham looks far better on my wrist than a Black Bay (and yes they ARE a Poor man's Rolex .. but is that a bad thing?.. we aren't all rich!) I have one of the nicest watches ever made on my wrist right now.. a 35mm 1952 RAF IWC Mk XI The modern trend for 45mm and above is aesthetically as ugly as a badgers ar**..but hey if having a soup plate on your wrist is what floats your boat.. go for it. I used to have a Speedy Alaska project.. and that big red case... man if it had been thinner I may have worn it.. as it was though... I have seen less chunky anti-personnel mines! I am a Mod on an FB Omega site.. we don't allow steering wheels cars, guns or knives...They all elicit comment about the car gun or knife and the watch in the photo tends to be too small or too blurred to see. Yes I love cars and bikes and planes too.. and for 16 years carrying a gun was a large(ish) part of my life...but you want to talk about knives guns bikes cars and fishing rods... go on a knifeygunnymotorfishing site or forum for your fill! As far as snobbery goes.. I am an Omega fan... big style but I can recognise that one speedmaster looks almost exactly the same as another (in the main) and how many 'anniversary models of some space flight or another are we going to see? .. one for Neil Armstrong's first dump on the moon? (did he poo whilst on the moon???) But generally they aren't as boring as Rolex's..now Rolex's are obviously very well made watches... but give me a Submariner 6205, or a first model Explorer, or even the 1950's turn-o-graph....but why oh why do they keep churning out the same boring models year after year after year as of late? I now have 190 watches ranging from £15 to £thousands... and just about every one has meaning for me in some small or large way. good video.. I must watch more of you methinks..danke!

My beef with Rolex is the same as my beef with DeBeers. I loath the artificial contraction of supply to drive up prices beyond reasonable limits. And I get that Rolex is one of the only brands who marketing is so successful that their watches hold or even increase in value in the secondary market.

I am in NOWAY upper crust, Ferarri owner and Richard Mille owner, so no watch steering wheel pics for me. Timepiece or watch? I like timepiece as who actualy watches a watch? The Rolex I have Dat Date white face was built from a broken Pawn Shop watch, parts to repair, New cystal, new blue balance spring, blue screw kit, new main spring, all in was $6500 repair, and locked away in my home safe. Never wear it outside, become a target for a mugging.
