Great video, thanks! One thing that I never see people talking about is the reaction time when interacting with the earbuds. This particular information is hard to find for each brand. It's a big thing for me, and maybe I'm not the only one. If the hear-through takes 3 seconds to be effective after pressing the button during an announcement or when someone is talking to you, it's a big no for me. I have the XM4, and they are lacking in this part.

Hi Aaron, another great vid. I have the wfxm5 and I absolutely love them, I have linkbuds s and wfxm4, but the xm5 to me is still to this day my absolute favourite buds, the default sound signature just checks all the boxes for me. I have no issues with the smooth texture at all when removing and inserting, the new foam tips are exceptional in my opinion. I really cannot fault them. Worth every penny I spent. Cheers J

Hi Aaron, love your work. Have you noticed that, unlike the previous model, the EQ settings don't seem to be stored on device and hence do not appear to carry over when listening via a laptop, watch or Bravia TV? Unless I have missed some subtle setting, the loss of EQ settings in device is a major step backwards as it makes these buds unlistenable on devices without the Sony app. I reach for my xm5s when using other devices which defeats the purpose of upgrading. I do like the smaller and lighter size and brighter tone but the default EQ setting on other devices is just awful.

I just got the Bose Ultra over the ear headphones. Amazing ANC I prefer the sound of my Airpod Max though however my Max had connection problems since day one even with a new pair that Apple gave me.

QQQ about Jabra Elite 10 - Mine are driving me nuts. Have you noticed the HUGE sound quality difference with ANC On (sounds good) and Off (sounds mono/tinny/thin)??? WHY would turning sound cancellation on/off change the source audio at all? ps. even going through all the different size buds, I just can't get the good secure feel I had with my Elite 75t. Any tips for this unique shape?

Hey Aaron! Any idea about the Creative Zen Pro/Plus line? It's the only earbud I've found that's advertised as supporting LC3+ out of the box together with wireless charge. But I haven't found a single review (out from the 2 on Amazon) about their quality and latency over LC3. I'm kinda hyped about the codec as it might be the only way to have a low latency device on Windows/Linux that can also use the mic without going into handsfree mode (which degrades the quality a lot). Although at this point I wonder if it'll ever become mainstream as its been years since it was announced and no properly working device with it seems to be working properly unless you've got a dongle

Try the Technics az-60 or az-80 eartips (they are same). This fixed the problem for a youtube reviewer after he tried many 3rd party eartips. Hope this helps

I have the same problem as you with big ears. I changed the tips with regular ones and the noise canceling works even better (tested with the app also and is tight, while using the biggest size foam tips from Sony the test app asked me to reposition the right ear again and again and was never satisfied).

After watched a few of your videos, with anticipation of the potential issues, I got mine just last week, I couldn’t get a good fit in one of my ears(I need a size between the M and L……), so have to use third party tips (I really miss the seal of etymotic glider tips😢); the small size, together with an upgrade of ANC from my ATH-CKS50TW(btw, I like them a lot, but wish they could have better ANC) are the main reasons I got them; I haven’t spent enough time with them to comment on the sound quality, so we’ll see

I got the xm5 as replacement for xm4 because of the battery problem. The biggest difference for me is the size, the smaller buds are much more comfortable for me. The biggest disappointment is that they have made the battery more difficult to replace. The battery in the xm4 can be replaced without soldering and that was the main reason I choose them originally. If I wasn't so lucky and got a free replacement, I could in theory have replaced the battery myself, but that might not be possible with xm5.

Is there still the earbud tapping problem in this? I’ve changed my xm4 twice and the problem was when there’s wind, it keeps blowing my sensors and it keeps freaking out that I’ve been using my xm4 with the two earbuds function off now… (also the battery problem but it didn’t happen to me with the second replacement now

I haven't had a chance to try the XM5, but i suspect they are as trash as my XM4 when it comes to using them with a raincoat in the rain. Does anyone know of a good sounding set of in ears, which can be used in the rain, without trash like the wet hood changing the volume, or pausing what you're listening to? ...or do anyone know of a reviewer who tests for these things?

Have used these since it was launched. I do travel a lot and have been trying to use these instead of headphones on flights. My issue is while trying to get a good seal, I end up getting a bad headache on any flights that are more than 3 hours. Ended up going back to headphones. Recently, I have also been getting complains that people cant hear me well on calls. Especially when I try to use both earbuds then putting one back into the case. Ended up using XM5s for consuming media or flights that are less than 3 hours. Carry Buds 2 Pros for important phone calls. And Bose NC700s for long flights. Still looking for the perfect earbuds...

I returned my for the qc ultra and man what a great decision. The anc was meh on sony plus I had so much connection issues with them. So much better on the bose. Sound quality wise as well I don't find much difference until you go into the frequency and decible chart comparing them

I bought them a almost a year ago and except the case battery life that are very short they are the best headphones I've ever used (i compared them to the airpods pro 2 they took them in everything except the ambient sound category's)

I don't know what battery issue you are referring to on the XM4's. My pair has been updated to the latest firmware and I do not have any excessive battery drain. Been using my pair for over 1 year now.

Some pairs seem to have defects that cause battery to drain within 20mins of use. My left one gave up after 6 mo and my right onr after 10mo. Thankfully its still under warranty so sony changed them for new ones without hassle. The new pair works well tobdate. Im praying they dont act up just when my warranty runs out in a few months!

I loved the fit of the linkbuds S. They replaced my Bose buds, but I’ve recently changed away from them too. Too quiet and I kept having connection issues where they connected to my phone despite being in my bad, annoying when I had headphones on which disconnected because of it. Tried the XM5 - not for me! The glossy finish is very annoying. Sony also not doing themselves a favour with the high prices.

I bought the XM5 earbuds a few days ago and it great... My only problem is the connectivity when I choose the "Prioritize sound quality" option. It disconnects very frequently as compared to my XM4 specially when I'm in the MRT tunnels (transitioning from circle line to NS line at Bishan MRT station) my XM4 also disconnects but not as bad as the XM5. This issue is resolved if I picked the "Prioritize stable connection" option but then I lose LDAC 😢. Not sure if this just happens on my device or it's really like that for all XM5 earbuds units.

Various factors could be involved here including the device. But I agree I do get some signal drops in that area too.

it's a common issue when you use high bandage steaming I believe, when I use Sennheiser MTW3 I face the same issue if I choose for high quality steaming, especially when you in MRT station, sometimes even on the bus I face this issue too, turn my head a little bit the connection will drop. When I turned on this function and the app does told me it might face connection issue, not sure about Sony.

As most people know, Sony headphones destortthe eq and lowers the overall volume. Setting the eq off fixes this at the cost of clarity and bass. I Almost returned my xm5 until i used the find my eq. This feature maintains volume at higher levels along with maintaining the eq. Don't use the manual eq.

I had the XFXM4 generation and I didn't like its sound quality. I recently bought the WFXM5 and I love their sound quality. I don't have to use EQ since the original sound with LDAC is very realistic and balanced. Still I think its sound quality is still below the Sennheiser MTW3. But I love the size of these headphones and especially the battery that is endless haha

Sennheiser MTW3 have quality issue too I guess, every 4 month of usage my right bud stop charging and can't be turned on anymore, I searched on the internet and seems many user is facing this issue. My 2nd set just spoiled for the same reason again few days ago, send them back to Sennheiser again, and now thinking change to XM5 instead.

Thanks, I own the Sony's and the Denon and I agree. Denon is the king, couldn't be happier. I also like Master and Dynamic's MW09's. Great earbuds, but they don't have good customer service, but wouldn't stop me from buying them. Thanks, Arron

Who heard devialet phantom or sony premium dacs, or xperia with dseehx would understand that good tws with ANC coupled with FR without sharp highs, not just anybody can offer this with such a dac performance. Actually I got cheap, now hard/impossible to get earfun air 1. Gen tws which got such a good dac(it was a luck tho), but sony should be a bit better even. I r Hear xm5 haven't got dust&.. filter in them, so buds must be with it, it's so sad... slippery thing too, but there is nothing better I would choose for now, if besides audio I want good ANC.

I'm between a rock and a hard place now. I had the XM4's and the battery died in the left earbud. Sony refused to fix them as they were 13 months old. So I bought the sennheiser M3's and have had two pairs in 5 months. Both have made high pitched sound in active noise cancelling mode, and the sound quality is awful ince they start beeping. Where to go from here? XM5's or the new M4's???

From most comparison videos i've seen, and from hearing out opinions of other people, they're great, but there are better earbuds within that pricerange. The Denon Perl pro's for example perform better, aswell as the Bowers & Wilkins PI7 2S's. A fact: B&O EX use Dynamic drivers, which are the most common drivers used in most headsets and earbuds. They no longer produce the absolute best sound quality. The B&W for example use balanced armature drivers. Those drivers are smaller, more efficient have excellent treble response and produce better sounds quality. Not saying you shouldn't buy them, cause they're by no means bad, but there are other alternatives that just do it even better within the same price range

Same, I hate the glossy finish on the XM5 since it causes it to slowly slip out of my ears more often due to my oily ears compared to the matte finish on the XM4. I tried replacing the eartips to Spinfit, Comply, AZLA, and some IEM eartips but they keep slipping out of my ears and get annoyed how I always have to adjust it every few minutes.

I love em but yeah they don't. Soo frustrating. But I'm ordering a set of Technics Az series eartips because I ran into a KZbinr that had same problem; he tried many 3rd party tips and none of em worked, untill he used the tips of his Technics AZ-80 and boom they magically fixed the problem.

I'd highly recommend the Sony LinkBuds S. I own both those and the XM5s and got total buyers' remorse. Linkbuds S you're paying less than half price for 95% of the sound quality and losing wireless charging. Matte finish, traditional eartip design so way more comfortable for long periods. Sorry to hear your XM5s don't fit well and hope your new eartips solve your issue!
