When it comes to cookware I've leaned a few lessons in 60 yrs of carrying it !!!..... Cast iron is to heavy.....aluminum is to light, duty wise..... titanium burns my food because of poor heat distribution... teflon always ends up scraping or peeling in my food and needs to be oiled anyways !!....that being said I'll take the weight and carry my Stanley cookset and Frying pan ,its stainless steel !! it wont fail... it doesnt warp ...its tough to dent...easy to clean no matter what happens !!!.....and doing the math for all of it it cost less and will outlive everything else available except cast iron !!!!

Just for the record, you can season aluminum much like you would cast iron. I have this set and it seasons well. I can fry eggs and they don't stick at all now. My one gripe is that the kettle doesn't hold enough water for two cups of coffee even.

Same goes for stainless steel. Use a small amount high-heat oil to coat the entire cook surface. Heat right to the smoke point on a stove top. Let cool and wipe clean. Repeat one more time. I have the SRO 8" stainless steel skillet and with the treatment above, I use all the time, not just for camping :D

An aluminum skillet such as that needs seasoned just as cast iron would. Learned that lesson almost 30 years ago when we bought an aluminum 1960’s vintage nesting camp cookware set at a garage sale and I promptly scrubbed the entire set to shininess and took all the seasoning off. First few times we used it, it was horrible. Everything stuck. We were at a group camping trip and my neighbor Larry saw me struggling and said “You dummy. There’s no seasoning on your pan. No s*** everything sticks.” Then instructed me to put some oil in them and burn that oil on by carbonizing it over a flame while maneuvering the pan to get it evenly covered. Larry was a treasure. Haven’t had an issue since. Still use that cookware base camping/overlanding. I touch up the seasoning maybe once a year. We also have a set of anodized magnesium/aluminum cookware for home. The skillets in the set all had to be seasoned inside, same as cast iron.

I’m the opposite, not a fan of those coatings especially camping. They’ll sluff off into your food rather easily when under the beating camping cooking kits take.

Personal experience….the quality is ok but for sure it is not non-stick. First time I used it (just cooking some eggs) it was a nightmare to clean. After trying different methods, I was able to clean it but some stains remained.

I hate non stick! Not having that is a massive bonus. Means pots last longer. With non stick you have to replace every time you scratch it.

That griddle bottom on the frying pan is a deal breaker. That thing will be a chore to clean.
@CrimeVid
@CrimeVid 9 ай бұрын
But why do you think that the company thought a corrugated bottom was a good idea ? imagine getting a half stuck fried egg off the thing !! I think they were trying to rigidise the bottom of the pan ! Anolon or Conolon are pretty stick resistant but they are pro kitchen quality. For car camping you can go to a supermarket and buy what you need and a plastic box to put it in,and it will work,or raid your own kitchen. You don’t need inadequate “Camping” stuff.

Thoughts. Those bowls seem to be thrown in with lots of cooksets out of China, they are rice bowl size, but agree there should be 4. The pot scraper looks more like a rice serving spoon. Anodized aluminum. I use anodized aluminum and they are semi non stick. I just use cold/warm water and some dish soap to soak the pots for maybe 10 mins before cleaning them. The stuck on food usually comes off easily. If you don't cook on full heat, and don't burn the food no problem. Seasoning the pots does help, same as with stainless steel.

I'm currently looking for two camping cooking set. A small one for two people and a big one for when camping in a group. I will agree a 100% with you, particularly if if the food sticks and it is difficult to clean. In a few occasions bears roam nearby the campsites and thankfully we never has a problems do precautions we take when camping in groups. Bear boxes and all the food and trash go inside a cargo trailer. But when I go individually with the family, I don't have that. Nevertheless, my biggest problem will be pan with the griddle texture. Being conservative, the pan is used almost 100% cooking breakfast and more than 50% you are cooking eggs. That will be a nightmare dealing with the griddle. Maybe if it is a bigger kit, a second pan with griddle texture will be ok.

Optimus cookware for the win. High quality anodized aluminum, silicone grips, and nonstick coating. I rarely see the brand get mentioned, but it's really nice stuff. I'll take the weight penalty of Al over Ti, because I like the cooking properties of Al better.

hard anodized aluminum can be seasoned like cast-iron which helps make it non-stick, or at least as non-stick as cast-iron gets. I've done exactly that to the frying pans from Firebox stove to excellent effect.

I had to return my Firemaple cook set because the hinges when closed have pretty pointy right angles where the hinges connect to the pot or pan. I didn't worry about it until it poked a hole through another bag in my pack and I started wondering if It would poke a hole in my sleeping pad. If the hinges were a bit rounded when closed, I would've kept it. But I moved on to Toaks and Stanley cook sets with no issues.

The scraper and 'bowls' are a rice scoop and rice bowls. The set is designed for the Asian market. The bowl is about the usual correct portion of rice and the scoop is the same design as rice scoops my Filipino wife prefers to use. The kettle is again Asian portioned.. 200ml for green tea is a standard portion for Chinese, Japanese and Koreans. The fry pan is also perfectly sized for Asian meat components of rice based dishes.

These thin metal pans and pots without non stock I find food will stick when the product being fried will form adhesive when the Temperature rises above a high simmer but there lies the canundrum. Fry without sticking and your product won't fry. It will only heat up and cook too slowly and will not cook the inside of a burger. That being said our only way to cook a burger or steak is a steel griddle then use a griddle knife to clean by razoring off the burn on. This is why diners have steel griddle tables. I clean my cast iron griddle with a razor blade. It works

Hey, it's a Chinese company. About the kettle. Not sure but they might make very strong tea in the kettle. You pour, like, a third of the cup and then add more boiling water. You can adjust how strong your tea is. So I think the kettle is fine.
@ralphneelands3990
@ralphneelands3990 9 ай бұрын
Yes, and tea is often served in tiny tea cups, not giant travel mugs. Also the plastic tool is a rice paddle, and the bowls are for rice. So there’s a cross-cultural thang going on.

The thing with anodized cookware is that people see it being used in professional kitchens and don’t understand why. Like you said, heat distribution is one of its strong points…. but being non stick is not. It can sear almost like cast iron at a fraction of the weight. But those using it for searing are often deglazing the pan afterwards with some type of liquid to release anything stuck to the bottom. Not really something one does on a hike or camp…. At least not most people lol. One other thing…. I’d be concertabout the handle on the fry pan getting damaged. Golding it underneath and the whole set on top of it, could potentially damage the handle in transit. Just my thoughts. Thanks for the first look.

TL:DR - This is a TERRIBLE kit... I've owned a frying pan of exactly that model from FireMaple, and due to it's razor thin bottom, it burns absolutely EVERYTHING on the bottom as it cannot distribute the heat evenly across the bottom of the pan. Boundless Voyage titanium pans have exactly the same issue... The only companies making truly non-stick camping cookware are GSI with their grey-coloured Soloist and Dualist range (NOT the stainless steel models), as well as JetBoil with its 8" skillet. Sea to Summit tried to make an 8 inch non-stick frying pan but dismally failed due to the Teflon chipping away on top of the fact it suffers the same heat distribution issue due to its incredibly thin base.

I got an almost identical set like this with a kettle a small pan and a saucepan for 25. This type of material is not ideal for frying because of its light texture, but if using u need to turn the gas down and cook slowly. The kettle and boiling pot are great especially those little kettles are so handy.

Fire Maple Feast 4 was a deal from Amazon for $48 in black accents. But I thought about a nonstick fry pan too late. Just ordered Fire Maple nonstick fry pan to add to the kit. Was looking for a review on the Flame King Pro Boil using propane but could not locate any. The best thing about a cook set is how the pots and pans nest together. The worst thing about a cook set is that you end up with pots and pans that you'll never use. I find it better to go buy the individual pots and pans that I know I will use and nest them as best I can.

Non-stick isn't supposed to be heated to over 500°F or it can off gas...500°F is sear temperature for meats...open fires regularly reach higher than 500°F...try putting a little water in the pan and heating it up... usually that will loosen up any debris... Only problem is plastic handles otherwise great open fire car camping set! Hope this helps... Cheers Luke!

This looks similar to the Odoland version on Amazon for competition. The Odoland version is about $27 for about 1-2 people and for car camping. It is true that anodized aluminum is not non-stick, even with having water readily available. I have a mallome 1P cook set that I take car camping. I’m in the process of replacing my kitchen setup for car camping. I’m looking for a good Nonstick pan or mini wok.

Thanks for reviewing. This is a set I was greatly interested in and almost considered buying. In fact I messaged you this morning about this and the candle. Anyhow. I had a bad run in with the gsi bugaboo for warping due to it being aluminum. I also had non stick sets, that the coating scraped off or scratched first use. If I could find a good pot / pan / kettle set similar to this I would buy. Although minus the bowls, scraper, and sponge. I am trying to go more compact, so that I can leave my gear packed and just go; rather than the time it takes to pack and unpack everytime.

The equipment and portion may be great for where the company is from, but not what other countries are looking for.

To create a non-stick surface on your frying pan or cooking pot, all you have to do is cover the cooking surface in a thin layer of salt. Then place the pan/pot onto the lit burner. Let the flame heat the pan or pot and keep it on the flame for about five to ten minutes. Continually stir the salt around the pan/pot surface. Do this at home. Then test it out; if it needs more salt burning then do so until it becomes non-stick. Washing with detergent will remove the non-stick surface.

I personally do not use any non-stick cookware for camping or home use. The coatings always come off in small bits over time due to wrong use of utensils or just plain wear. Those bits of the coating when ingested may cause cancers. In any case I have no complaints with any of the non-coated cookware.

I must have version 1.0 of the exact kit and the same cups LOL pretty funny. The reason the fry pan has the raised ribs is to help it not warp. The original flat one the thin aluminum warps by just looking at it. But same deal with the 1.0 version this type of aluminum finish has zero non stick properties

Man, thank you so much for this video, that much plastic is a no go for me. The food sticking is a damn shame.

IF and when they bring out a non stick, I would absolutely purchase on. No cups- uh excuse me bowls, no sponge and non stick would be awesome.

I use a cast iron frying pan. I use oil. Never had a problem with food sticking. I used to eat a lot of Teflon over at grandma's house with her non-stick pans. Cooking ain't rocket science. If your food is sticking, move it further away from the flame. If you can't cook food on an open flame, it's hereditary. Sorry about your luck.

I would use anodized aluminum but I won't use anything with a nonstick coating. If you're actually going to do some real cooking, you're going to carry quite a bit of weight just carrying the food. I am very picky where cookware is concerned. My home cookware is in the neighborhood of twenty thousand dollars. I'm inclined to just bring one or two pieces from my home but I found some miniature stainless steel pieces made by a high end brand just for gourmet cooking while backpacking. I use nonstick cooking spray and peanut oil when frying and I clean with a brush and Barkeepers friend because seriously nothing else works. When you clean stainless, you have to get all the calcium off or everything will stick and nothing else will get it off. If I could get seven ply waterless cookware approximately sized for backpacking, I would spend the money and bear the weight because it's by far the best. You can actually bake a perfect cake in a pan on the stovetop in a Saladmaster pan. As far as nonstick coatings are concerned, they're absolutely not allowed in house or my food prep. That's a hard no.

It’s a 2 person at best, as far as nonstick, I wouldn’t ever use nonstick, outdoor or at home. I use stainless or titanium outdoor and sticking is a non issue as I just simply burn off any residual stuff from cooking and use very little water and Mother Nature provides ample scrubbing products to help remove any stuck on bits. Knowing how to cook and how to care for your cookware eliminates any issues.Also any cooking products with a coated handle for me is useless.

I've had a set just like this (exact frying pan looks like, ridges in all) in the past, yrs ago in the early start of camping, I didn't know any better at the time. I hated the pan, it's a chore even at home.... He's right (again) 😊.... Don't bother. I only have one set that's not non stick now but there stainless with a polished inside for car/kayak camping, not so much an issue. That material is terrible.

I need a recommendation for a 9-10 inch camping skillet, I don’t want to overspend but at the same time I don’t want to buy a $10 pan and it be junk

I do wish all companies who add plastic or silicone to their cookware to make it removable like trangia did with their kettle handle. And yeah anodized aluminum is not as nonstick as marketed, but better than normal aluminum - harder to dent, scratch and corrode. As others have said, just season it.

Hi Luke!: I would rather it be nonstick, even though you can season the pans. What turns me off is the strange size of the pans. The skillet looks to be good sized, but you get those LARGE pots. Then they skimp on the size of the kettle? Strange. A lot of those sets have those cheesy useless bowls.

If theyre saying an extended backpacking trip and were looking at something that is clearly a "base camp" kit.... it should be obvious that its a group going. If youre hauling all this solo or even in a pair.... is it about the hike or the food?

You can’t beat a solid bit of ‘British intelligence’. Fantastic ep guys, your summing up Justin at the end - spot in chap. It’s difficult to see it when you are at the event horizon, but make no mistake Putin cannot afford to take his foot of the gas right now - so we have to be the immovable object.

Not problem to me, i dont like non stick. But saying that the frying surface being uneven is part of the problem. Always hard to clean. I prefer a good stainless steal pan and bacon grease.

Must be non-stick, handle I prefer is the clip on handles. Toss the cups and spoon thing and the sponge. Cleanup is a major concern and time consuming.

The fact it’s aluminium would be a dealbreaker, also any non stick cookware for me would be a dealbreaker, the toxins and carcinogens incorporated in non stick coatings that then end up in the food is an unacceptable risk. Personally I only use carbon steel which soon becomes non stick anyway once properly seasoned and stainless steel cookware.
