Summary: Guys I wanted to add more to the review but ran out of time due to IRL stuff sorting stuff out for my Mother with all this virus stuff going on. So I will add it here instead. The boss fights in this game are more like Dark souls fights, watching and learning the moves, dodging, parrying then hitting, I found them really boring for a FPS, they could have been way better. The level design is great most of the time but some are terrible, very inconsistent which was disappointing for a Doom game. It's just like a series of closed arenas joined together by some boring parkour levels that really feel like they belong in Tomb raider or Assassins creed, certainly not Doom. The brilliant combat is what allows you to forget the immersion breaking parkour, the bad levels, the boring bosses or the stupid collectables. I think you may struggle with a controller, this game was made for K+M, especially on the harder difficulties which make the game so much more enjoyable to play. I never had time for multiplayer, it sounded meh anyway, so there you go, sorry if the review was a bit jumbled this time but it's been a horrible week, am sure next week will be a lot better.

Same, the massive battles could get so intense and adrenaline-pumping I really appreciated the parkour bits in-between to kind of wind things down a little bit in-between fights. Maybe it's not like the original doom, but...I don't give a flip. I never liked original doom to be honest, it was always a clunky archaic game and doom 2016 and eternal are just better in every way, even when factoring in the technology of their times.

Yup, platforming gave a nice relief. Also - it had very nice soothing or epic music, which was a welcome change of pace to the metal parts (which, actually, got me tired; gonna replay doom with some calmer background) All in all, this doom is so arcady and in your face about it, the platforming just becomes a given.

@@rentalsnake6542 The 1-10 system is kinda redundant. I've griped plenty about the lack of ammo in this game but I'm kinda surprised how much people hate the mere existence of platforming in this game. I honestly cannot stand platformers myself, enough that I won't ever get the newest Ori game no matter how good it is. However the platforming in this game really isn't bad. Its quick, responsive and not particularly difficult. I've never heard a person criticize the platforming as bad, but I've seen a TON of people hate the fact that it merely exists. They get morally offended that someone dare put platforming in their doom game. Like it hasn't existed in one form or another since the original.

Platforming in Doom did not exist until Doom 2016, beyond stuff like the sprinting across intricate gaps or paths ala the end of Tricks and Traps. I think doom 2016 handled jumping and climbing brilliantly. I think this time there's just too much of it, ie it's become a big staple part of the gameplay loop. I mean hells invasion just perfectly placed all these grab ledges, jumps and climbing walls perfectly positioned exactly the distance Doom guy can burst or jump. How Convinient, hells minions planned the Doom Slayers play park climbing frame better than most civil engineers could plan a road.

"SOCIETY, WHY?!?!" Yeah that actually held me back from 100%-loving the Doom 2016 game. You clear a whole crazy room full of monsters, adrenaline pumping...but SOMEWHERE...there's a BOBBLEHEAD and a SECRET DOOR... The worst thing is I felt like I was missing something if I didn't find those things...so here I am hopping around an empty level climbing on stuff and poking around every corner like I got locked in a department store for the night, instead of slaying demons. Blah. I understand the pacing thing, and need for variety, but I felt like it stomped the brakes a bit. The design around health/ammo pickups is incredible though, how the game encourages you to be MORE aggressive when you're in danger, instead of hiding behind stuff or hunting down pickups.

He is alright , i even watch him sometimes , but let's face it he is a boomer. In his book a crappy game with old school pixel graphics worth more than a fantastic game with modern graphics. He gets easily overwhelmed by game features like in Doom Eternal but at the same time he hates story driven games aswell like the Witcher 3. Just to mention two best games of the decades. @Stacey Bowtell as someone who has played the original doom multiple times, quake and the build engine games. I can safely say that all the elements are integrated perfectly well. Doom 2 had a lot of platforming which were limited by the technology of its time. I'm glad Doom Eternal is its own thing, while paying tribute to so so many games and genres. There were quake arenas, there were Doom 3 facilities, the level in which you find Hayden reminded me of Shrapnel City from Duke Nukem 3D, there was Dark Souls level design, there was prince of persia platforming. Nothing overrated about it. Just every element polished to 110 percent.

I don’t really get the complaint against the collectibles. With how Eternal works, there’s not much reason to put resource secrets, besides a mega sphere. They usually scatter low tier demons on your way to an arena, so you can stock up. If it’s a toy, who really even cares? It’s not like the Fortress of DOOM is decorated all over with them, they’re shoved away in the extra content room. Also, it’s not like you have to collect them all, so you can defeat the Icon of Sin by making him step on all your toys and giving him unfathomable foot pain. As for the platforming, I actually enjoy it. They’re definitely not going to rack your brain and they can be done relatively quick. What did bother was the VERY few swimming sections in the game. Unlike the quick platforming sections or the occasional puzzle, it didn’t fit the flow. I dunno, it was awkward, and even after replaying the game, I still feel the same. The complaint about the upgrades, I don’t agree. You can put thought into it or you can just be like me and not really care. Another complaint I have is the secret encounters. Nothing is more frustrating than running out of ammo, then having to die to redo it again. To be fair, I had this happened to me on one level, but it was beyond fucking annoying. Also because secret encounters are timed, later encounters just devolve into switching between the super shotgun and ballista, which kinda kills it for me. Last thing I’ll address, the “weak guns.” Everything felt like it has a purpose and powerful in its own way, especially the BFG. If we wanna talk about weak weapons, let’s talk about DOOM 2016. Near the end of that game, you’re probably riding on the minigun, super shoegun, stun bomb gun, rocket launcher, and geese cannon because big damage. In Eternal I felt like I had to use everything, even up until the end.

Picked this up on Saturday afternoon, turned out to be the day my local high street Game was closing to move to an out of town site, to help me through the evenings now we're pretty much in lock down in the UK. Mindless frenetic fun. Not got far into it yet so can't comment on the platforming elements mentioned here but I can live with that. I think. Never played an Assassin's Creed game or a new Tomb Raider since the 2013 reimagining. Just so long as it stops me going insane as the country grinds to a halt. Got to agree on the modding comments (though again not really got there yet), I don't like that in games. I'm a simple person. I just want a gun, and another gun, and another bigger gun. All the skill and modding trees confuse my tiny little mind.

each to their own of course but i found the small amount of platforming in doom 2016 fucking painful (mainly argent tower) but i really enjoy it in eternal. its something fun to do inbetween combat and gives new creative and semi skill based ways to access secrets. I really hate the whole it doesnt fit in the environment or it doesn't make sense arguement. the weapon pickups are bright green, float and spin around, this game doesnt take itself 100% seriously (actually some of the bars even make sense like the broken yellow pipes in the super gore nest). I mean in cultist base theres a section where you reveal some demons hidden inside pillars locked with chains, a lot of things in the game dont make sense when you think about it seriously. some areas i will admit however were annoying, mainly urdak and thoes booster portals.

@TheBuragi This. I loved 2016 Doom as much as the next guy but like the whole *DARK* and GRITTYYY obsession always seemed weird to me. The series was designed to be tongue and cheek and arcade-y from it's inception. Doom 2016 kinda took Doom 3 elements and synthesized it in a modern way. Lol, I actually thought the platforming was quite nice. Here’s the thing. I LOVED this game, but I do agree with you when you talk about your brain going onto autopilot, and while I also thought the platforming was just *A LITTLE* out of place in Doom, I felt it was done well enough that it wasn’t bothersome, and it was a nice change of pace and a good way to engage you and take your mind off of auto-pilot. I personally think this game is absolutely awesome in MOST regards. And IMO, it’s easily one of the best FPS of this generation, and deserves recognition... I also think that most content creators are over-hyping this game. But that’s what I expect. 99% of content creators tailor their reviews to whatever the most prevalent narrative is, and the COMPLETELY lose their ability to be constructively critical, in an effort to tell people what they want to hear. Just sayin’

I LOVED Doom 2016! The gameplay, the cinematics, the snapmap! Everything! I love how you was just thrown into the game. I was actually REALLY disapointed, when i noticed that everytime i was about to meet a new monster, i would get a tutorial as of how they act and how they should be defeated? WHAT?! Exploration just got washed down the drain. There is now, nothing scary nor excting about meeting a new monster, cause they all got a safe tutorial mode.. WHAT IS THAT?! And as i played i really got annoyed with the platforming as well, i must admit! Wauw.. I wanted to love this game, and i think i still do. But the platforming and the intrusivce tutorials that ruins all shocks/imersion whatever.. And no snapmap.. Im happy and disappointed at the same time. I think its because i know how good all the other dooms are, including 2016. But this seems to have missed the mark about a few things, which is kind of sad. I wil still enjoy every moment of this game, its f*cking awesome! I love it! But it's just not as amazing as it could have been, because these stupid things have been thrown into it. I could have accepted the platformer aspect, but the tutorials that pops up a training area, every fucking time you get a new skill or meet a new enemy.. That kills every bit of immersion.. Wauw.. I dont know how that got through! Overall a great game! If I would give 2016 9/10, this is a 8 or 7.5/10.

“The game is so intense you have to take breaks” “The game is so repetitive” .....that’s what the platforming’s for. To give you breaks from how wonderfully exhausting a long battle can be, and to break the repetition. It gives you some room to breathe but it isn’t just a staircase or cave to walk thru. It makes you actually have to partake in the game to get to the next fight instead of being fight after fight. The only memorable “platforming” part in 2016 I can remember is the little laser puzzle. Doom 2016 was EXTREMELY repetitive in comparison to this game, and honestly, is now a 7/10 game just by Eternal releasing. It was an 8 or an 8.5 at time of release, and will always be an awesome game, but will have not aged super well because of Eternal introducing so many new things. This game’s release really highlights 2016’s flaws that we may not have realized before Eternal. And the fact that some people described this game’s platforming as “puzzles” is kinda telling as to where their head is. Sure some of it is “puzzles” but they’re literally extremely simple. Less than a “puzzle” in a game Half Life would be.
@RJ-mi3ck

ZacTheFirst not only just the platforming but reading Codex Entries help break up the combat as well if you ever feel like reading them in between the fights. They’re a nice little breather, and they contain a shit load of interesting lore and world building. The game literally offers so many ways to mix the game up a bit by combining different enemies you encounter in a fight as well as the unique and well made arenas, and they literally reward you for exploring as well. This guy was contradicting pretty much every point he made in the video. He said there’s no rewards that can actually help you even though they reward shit like extra lives and cheat codes when you solve puzzles or explore, which are super useful. Then he starts bitching about the collectibles for whatever reason as like they weren’t already in the Doom 2016 as well. Like honestly the whole time he was just pulling a bunch of pointless gripes and nitpicks our of his ass just so he can be a contrarian and not praise the game like pretty much everyone else is doing, and the praise is definitely well deserved. Id had so much passion for this game, and it shows.

Yes, thank you. That's exactly what I wanted to say. I don't understand why it's so immersion-breaking that an unstoppable, superhuman, badass warrior with magical abilities and endless stamina can climb a wall or swing on poll. Ridiculous. I like Mack's videos, but on this we definitely disagree.

The Turok games had platforming in them. Everyone hated those sections too.. :) The last thing that should "break up" the intense combat in an FPS such as these is something as unsuited to the FPS genre as platforming! Don't get me started on limited ammo..! :)
@ZacTheFirst
@ZacTheFirst 4 жыл бұрын
@@MorrisseyMuse 1. The turok games are very dated and were designed to work for a controller with a single analog stick, so they're kinda clunky even when playing the modern rereleases because of how old they are, so a lot of the platforming is a bit weird, but that game, similar to Doom Eternal, is about keeping momentum and not getting hit, and finding items, instead of running towards an enemy and shooting and calling it a day. And the platforming is a huge part of what makes Turok what it is. If it were just " Goldeneye with dinosaurs" or whatever people would remember the game as being way more limited in scope and style than it already is. 2. I still do not understand the ammo complaint. I literally almost never ran out of ammo. JUST USE THE CHAINSAW. The chainsaw recharges every 10 - 15 seconds and there's the endlessly respawning zombie/imp/gargoyle enemies in EVERY SINGLE fight that you can use it on to get ammo. Because of this, you essentially have unlimited ammo and way more ammo than you would have in Doom 2016.

@@MorrisseyMuse You say "everyone hated those sections too," implying everyone hates platforming int Doom. That's demonstrably false. My experience of people's feelings on the subject has been rather mixed, but in my case I had fun with them. They added a sense of movement and verticality that the previous game just didn't do well enough. To say that something like climbing or swinging ruins immersion is not only subjective, but frankly a bit petty. Moreover, why exactly is platforming "unsuited?" It works for me, and often brings an additional layer of fun to the game.

Doom 2016 had no platforming like this new one, but the fighting did feel repetitive after a while too, yet barely any review ever pointed that out. I really appreciate the honesty of this channel.

The statement "feel repetitive" is very subjective. For me Doom 2016 didn't feel that repetative (yes it was sometimes because use same single weapon). I played campain throught mission select like more then I can remember. But Doom Eternal doesn't fell repetative at all, because you have to adapt the current situation.

Matthew's Couch do u not know the context to Hwy he said what he said? gamers lately give amazing reviews to games that by older game standards are just very ok. look at how much errand-running or even lifeless feeling environments or shallow stories games have nowadays its really shocking so many people don't notice this. I'm not old an old fart either. how much more bare-bones and lifeless can games get before people can no longer praise it. just seems people will praise anything now cause really good games don't come around as much. no hate just saying seems like people enjoy eating the hype a lot. also I do think doom eternal is a solid game just nowhere near groundbreaking.

This game was amazing in my opinion , I guess for some it just hits the Mark. I appreciated all of it, even the platforming. I’m pretty certain no game had made me feel like a bad ass like this one, I took so much stress out on those demons, just sliced through them surviving then refusing to die then surging by the seat of my pants. There’s no game like it, before this I wasn’t great at FPS games but this game taught me, I’m shocked I managed to finish it on ultra violence.

Matthew Challacombe the doom weapons in vanilla a balanced to a tee.the main reason I love it is that the megawads (custom maps) and some sound mods is all that you need to have an enjoyable experience (I went so far as to make a weapon skin mod to give it extra flare.been playing custon megawads for half a decade and still with OG doom and doom 2.

Matthew Challacombe the fps genre only really became great in 1997 with quake and the build engine trilogy of duke nukem,shadow warrior and blood.I don't need mods to play those that's for sure.all doom needs is a kick in the right direction, it it becomes great.something I can't say for most other games.

Matthew Challacombe bullshit,you just can't adapt to hitscanners well.also your claim that quake had just 5 good levels is subjective at beast and horseshit at worst.I played quake a number of times and enjoyed the hell out of it each time.there is nothing wrong with hitscanners, especially since most attacks of that type can easily be avoided with other enemies,cover and a swift response.
