It's not a change. The old Minotaur art is still present in Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica and still canon. The *entire* point of the book is to highlight the fact that "hey, don't let your creativity get limited by common tropes, these races you're used to can also exist in ways that go completely against said tropes"

@@wiimaster6421 Orcs are often stereotyped as stupid, tribal, brutes, intrinsically evil etc. This overlaps with a lot of racist thought, so many people are uncomfortable when writers use the "this race from a far of land is intrinsically bad so its okay to genocyde them". Esp when writers take elements from actcal, real-life societies (most commonly, ideas of shamanism/voodoo) and tack them onto orcs. Just leaves a lot of people with a lot of questions/discomfort.

To be fair, there should be a variety within races where they look different from one another. Some minotaurs are going to be slimmer and more agile than others, after all. It does make me think that most of the 4e art had the right idea of including like 3 examples of each creature in an exemplary piece of art. Imagine this twinkish looking one next to a bigger, brawnier, barbarian-y looking one, next to maybe an older, grizzled one that's a spellcaster or something. That would give a much clearer idea of the potential varieties of minotaurs you can play or use as npcs.

Not sure about 5E but this is precisely why older versions had alternate racial traits. Still. The Minotaur has been depicted as this British half man half bull for hundreds of not thousands of years. There’s zero reason to change it. Like I cannot think of a single reason to change it. Like there’s a dozen races that can cater to a “twinkish looking fighter.” Not every race needs a version of it. Because there’s already options there.

To be honest a character I already made a while ago is minataur barbarian...that is just dairy farmer forced into adventuring due to a drought and needing to help support her family. However I never played her...because I mentioned her to a non dnd friend...and they started making jokes about her being...a "milk" cow. I was trying to make wholesome Mother character that occasionally makes cow jokes, but not THOSE kind. Now I'm afraid to play her. So point is wholesome cows were already a thing for some.

what they've done is taken it out of Theros, where it was still a terrifying strength based beast, perfect for martial characters, and made it just a multiverse dude, so it can play any class, which fits with Tasha's rules for putting your ability scores wherever you want. it's now just a cow person

No one is forcing the appearance of the minotaur, but they are a race of humanoids and therefore each one looks different. The old minotaur exists too, we have 4 different arts for the minotaur and each one looks like a whole different class, we have the og that is a barbarian a fighter what seems to be a cleric and the last one is probably a bard or a rogue

It just looks kind of odd though. Official art for these races is kind of supposed to show what the race's whole *idea* is, not throw it out for no reason. At least the Hobgoblin art (and I say this being someone who doesn't like the new Hobgoblin at all) *kind of* leaned into the military idea with the guitar thing also being an axe weapon, but really not much.

@@ussxrequin it's due to a lot of mechanics. Including weapons. Attacks and abilities come from the size of weapons and extend to abilities. So a minotaur hitting for 20 damage on a single turn (as an example) doesn't come from the minotaur but from the weapon that the minotaur is allowed to use. As the size category increases so does that base damage of said weapon. This includes abilities like token blocking NPCs/players, grabble/tackling, or the fact that all aoe damage in most situations would nuke everything in site. There's ways around all of this "homebrew" but in terms of just regular DnD it doesn't work rules as written. Simply put for each category above medium you get an addition die for each size. So a lvl 1 with the exact same starting sword but of their size category to be proficient would be 2/3D10. So imagine if you will teaching someone how to play D&D there's a level one fighter and before they even understand what features they've done 20 to 30 damage on a single turn. God forbid they try to pvp and murder the party because let's be honest nothing can stop them.

I'm also not that big a fan of MotM. This has been the case for many of Wizard's reprints; it feel like they mainly removed 'problematic' lore and gameplay mechanics instead of adding new cool stuff. It's a shame. I have no real problem with them trying to separate D&D from the Forgotten Realms, but the fact that their tool of choice is removing & boiling down old content instead of replacing it with something interesting or flavorful just feels awful.

Exactly. Tasha's *already* did what it had to by saying you can legally make up your own ability score modifiers regardless of race if you don't like what's there. Now they remove those entirely so I hear, because we need to not have the barest hint of an idea that a massive bull is stronger on average than a tiny halfling. They're just canceling themselves at this point, and making lore less interesting. Because you know what? The world isn't fair. There aren't 20 strength women in the world- that is to say, the strongest woman was always been weaker than the strongest man. And don't get me wrong, that sucks. If you want to play a +STR woman or halfling or kobold or w/e at the game table, great! Now make it part of the story. In Mistborn, if you're poor (Skaa), you don't get the magic! Sucks to suck! Now you have a Skaa magic person - okay, that's interesting! Where in their bloodline did a noble have a kid with a Skaa? It makes you think and actually put effort into the RPG. Harry Potter has the same thing. Its one thing if the lore was this way from the start. But imagine if major book series decided suddenly nah... everyone gets the magic now randomly, everyone's the same, the world is fair and equal and there are no class or race struggles because we're in magical pixie land. That's what it feels like wizards is doing for me... and a perfectly fair world cuts out a lot of interesting underdog stories.

I thought you were gonna talk about the mechanics. Minotaur was one of the few races with a natural weapon that already did d6 damage, like every such race now does. But instead of giving them something extra to account for that, they took away their extra skill and gave them advantage on some Survival checks. Minotaur really did get screwed over.

I think it's fine, I know it doesn't match the legendary threatening image, but since it's for the player race, I think it's meant to help show they don't have to be threatening if you don't want them to be
