I was hoping Goff wasn't so completely blind to his cosmology's implications that he had an explanation for why an all-knowing god would use evolution, a process whose sole benefit is generating information, despite its brutality clearly conflicting with its all-loving nature. He seemingly either does not see that this problem alone makes his cosmology completely untenable, or else has seen the problem and is doing the usual excusegist tap-dance. In either case, his con...version certainly isn't making me feel as if atheism has become _less_ tenable.

Goff's god doesn't sound like an omniscient god. An omniscient god would be able to achieve his immediate goal on the first try, because he would know how to achieve it the first time, even if he wasn't omnipotent. In fact, an omniscient god would know if he would fail the first time, or the 2nd, or the 3rd. But there is a deeply disturbing idea behind that. That god can only operate according to what he knows about. He knows with 100 percent certainty what he is going to do next. He's a puppet who can see the strings. Does god have free will if he always knows what he is going to do next for eternity? Also, so glad that Cameron is slowly accepting Goff's perspective. Let's hope it goes viral in Christianity to make their god even smaller.
@teddy1234599
@teddy1234599 19 күн бұрын
"An omniscient god would be able to achieve his immediate goal on the first try, because he would know how to achieve it the first time, even if he wasn't omnipotent." I THINK you're wrong here. An omniscient god who was only semipotent (spelling intentional) would KNOW that he could NOT get it right on his first try (or any try?); so he'd enjoy making the mess of things (we're stuck with) because he'd be doing the best he could. It's because god did the best he could that we have the phrase: mediocrity breeds content!
@CB66941
@CB66941 18 күн бұрын
@teddy1234599 You're not wrong for thinking that, and that just shows you the problem with omniscience as well. "He would know he would not get it on the first try." "He would know how to get it on the first try, despite being semipotent" These 2 statements would be true for an omniscient god, but they also reveal that: Despite god knowing how to do it, for some reason he can't choose the known method because he knows he can't achieve it on the first try. If he knows, it doesn't make sense then that he wouldn't act on it the first time, unless as you suggest, it was intentional. It's also why I stated that god, if he is omniscient, is following a script. The only way for those 2 statements to really make sense would be an intent to go through it for some reason or if he had to follow them both to a tee.

I am so glad I no longer have to resort to atheism! It has been so embarrassing for me to admit that I like things to be believable, and have good, solid evidence to back them up; when all I have to do is take the claims that have no evidence and change them to claims no one has made, while simultaneously stating they need no evidence because I don’t believe them to be extraordinary. Goff’s mental gymnastics can only get you to deism, then a switcharoo to a god that couldn’t reflect deism due to its ineptitude. His god is a contradiction of itself.

While I am now an atheist, I once wrote for a now defunct Christian history website. The early church that people now consider "orthodox," in contrast to gnostic, etc., actually believed in the "ransom" theory of atonement. That is, people were held in spiritual captivity to sin, and that Jesus died as a ransom to Satan in order to set the world free from the bonds of sin, allowing everyone to choose to repent (about face) & live unfettered & able to please god.

Theism actually explains everything. Unicorns exist? Goddiddid. Unicorns don't exist? Goddiddid. Square circles exist? Goddiddid. Square circles don't exist? Goddiddid. Evolution is true? Goddiddid. Evolution is false? Goddiddid. Theism explains way too much.

I'm baffled at why Goff claims to be a Christian when he denies so many of its tenets. He relies on a pick-and-mix of heresies and his own made-up stuff. Surely it couldn't be that framing that as a "conversion to Christianity" gets you more airtime than saying "I've made up stuff"?

Actually as mrdeity has pointed out... It's probably about book sales. It's just a stunt like Jordan Peterson pulls... by calling himself a theist and a "Christian" he gets a whole lot of attention on youtube. When his book is released it will get a lot of sales.

That feel when a philosopher says that humans are "radically different from God", but Genesis 3 is pretty clear that actually if you just make a human immortal... and Genesis 11 pretty clearly states that teamwork makes the omnipotent dream work...

Since when did becoming a Christian become the cool new thing for non-Christians to do? And by "becoming Christian" they apparently don't mean actually believing in Jesus.

@@dougt7580 This is unfair I think. I don't see how Goff's very unconventional beliefs will gain him a following amongst many Christians. FWIW I think he is sincere but I am perplexed by the apparent shallowness of his arguments and whilst it is easy to dismiss views we disagree with, he is a serious philosopher. He is quoted as saying that he is only "close to 50%" sure that his version of Christianity is true. If accurate I wonder if his current position is a form of action research where he is exploring what comes out of this experience?

Bertuzzi is so frustrated by Atheism that any deity with at least some of the properties of his god is good enough. Doesn't realise that he is actually making small steps towards Atheism (removing all godly properties) 加油Cameron Can't wait to see his next interview with William Craig; Cam asking what Craig thinks about Goff's theology 😂😂

Saying he takes atheism even less seriously than before - when, in a hypothetical universe where religion was absent from the world and both sides were describing their views to a psychiatrist, his would get him put away in a mental institution for life. Pathetic.

Goff is right again. A god of limited ability is much easier to imagine, and defeat. Instead of god being like a Super Soldier, god is more like a bumbling whining Russian conscript. That would take the 'fearing' out of 'god fearing'.
