Goff's god doesn't sound like an omniscient god. An omniscient god would be able to achieve his immediate goal on the first try, because he would know how to achieve it the first time, even if he wasn't omnipotent. In fact, an omniscient god would know if he would fail the first time, or the 2nd, or the 3rd. But there is a deeply disturbing idea behind that. That god can only operate according to what he knows about. He knows with 100 percent certainty what he is going to do next. He's a puppet who can see the strings. Does god have free will if he always knows what he is going to do next for eternity? Also, so glad that Cameron is slowly accepting Goff's perspective. Let's hope it goes viral in Christianity to make their god even smaller.
@teddy123459919 күн бұрын
"An omniscient god would be able to achieve his immediate goal on the first try, because he would know how to achieve it the first time, even if he wasn't omnipotent." I THINK you're wrong here. An omniscient god who was only semipotent (spelling intentional) would KNOW that he could NOT get it right on his first try (or any try?); so he'd enjoy making the mess of things (we're stuck with) because he'd be doing the best he could. It's because god did the best he could that we have the phrase: mediocrity breeds content!
@CB6694118 күн бұрын
@teddy1234599 You're not wrong for thinking that, and that just shows you the problem with omniscience as well. "He would know he would not get it on the first try." "He would know how to get it on the first try, despite being semipotent" These 2 statements would be true for an omniscient god, but they also reveal that: Despite god knowing how to do it, for some reason he can't choose the known method because he knows he can't achieve it on the first try. If he knows, it doesn't make sense then that he wouldn't act on it the first time, unless as you suggest, it was intentional. It's also why I stated that god, if he is omniscient, is following a script. The only way for those 2 statements to really make sense would be an intent to go through it for some reason or if he had to follow them both to a tee.

I am so glad I no longer have to resort to atheism! It has been so embarrassing for me to admit that I like things to be believable, and have good, solid evidence to back them up; when all I have to do is take the claims that have no evidence and change them to claims no one has made, while simultaneously stating they need no evidence because I don’t believe them to be extraordinary. The early church that people now consider "orthodox," in contrast to gnostic, etc., actually believed in the "ransom" theory of atonement. Phil seems to be inventing the Christianity that he prefers. But honestly, that’s what all Christians are doing.

How about all-knowing god gives the king a letter in the 1300's saying "the black death is caused by fleas". How about that?

Good to know that ol’ Cam’s still just as certain that he’s got it all figured out & that atheism’s still got a bit part in the discussion. Good ol’ Cam - the very vision of prideful arrogance.

So, is Goff pushing New Age Christianity? Is god emanating all those vibrations?

So if you don't like the consequences of your definition of God, all you have to do is prune the bits that don't work until you have a definition that works. Create your own god in three easy steps

Well, that's probably how the religious traditions (and holy books) came about in the first place. Some people imagining God, and then others editing over time.

Saying he takes atheism even less seriously than before - when, in a hypothetical universe where religion was absent from the world and both sides were describing their views to a psychiatrist, his would get him put away in a mental institution for life. Pathetic.

the prager clips feel to me like Sideshow Bob stepping on rakes. Funny at first, then getting old, then once you've forgotten about them, funny again.

I like how he's got the epistemic grounding for his world view exactly the wrong way around. If you base your world view on something, you should examine that better and with more scrutiny, not with less. You can't build on a shoddy foundation. Sheesh.

Goff is right again. A god of limited ability is much easier to imagine, and defeat. Instead of god being like a Super Soldier, god is more like a bumbling whining Russian conscript. That would take the 'fearing' out of 'god fearing'.

You know, I can honestly say that the words of Cameron have caused me to take apologetics less seriously. So I suppose I shouldn't harshly criticize Cameron taking atheism less seriously. And if in consequence Cameron does an even worse job of addressing atheism, I won't complain.

As Obi Wan said "Many of the truths we cling to depend on a certain point of view." Also, I would be remiss if I didn't say that this video also gave me a semi. 🤣
