Actually, we can credit Christianity - specifically Benedictine monks - for the invention of the modern clock. If that seems cruel to you, know that 10 1/2 years ago, almost to the day, my 25 year old son died. I miss him terribly, but have no problem with never seeing him again. People responding "No religion": 2013 - 41.9% 2018 - 48.2% 2023 - 51.6% Those declaring themselves Christian were down from 36.5% in 2018 to 32.3%, or 102,000 less total people. The sad part about those statistics is that the Christians will claim that "Islam is the fastest growing religion" (1.2 to 1.5, or +0.3, which is nearly a 16% rise in the raw numbers), and so press the panic button while blaming secularism for being "supportive of Islam". But tiny increases from a tiny base always show up as a large percentage increase. This is despite the raw numbers showing a much greater increase in number of people choosing "No Religion" - more than 11 times the raw number increase compared to Islam.

More than a decade ago, we saw the rise of "new atheism", which was just a vocal outcry against belief that was never possible before, thanks to the Internet. The "new" atheists had the resources and connections to allow us to consolidate and share arguments, which scared and annoyed believers. So the "new atheist" label was applied to distinguish between the "old atheists", who were apparently fewer in number, less vocal and were frankly, steamrollered by the powerful voices of faith. What we're seeing now with people like Brierley is a form of "new theism", in which they start to exploit those same resources to try and unite other believers. It's a PR response to Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens (and now people like Alex O'Connor, Matt Dillahunty, Aron Ra and others). But the major difference is that they simply don't have any new evidence, ideas or validity to share. Someone who questioned the existence of a deity ten years ago could find support to bolster their suspicions; a "new theist" can only regurgitate the same old tired nonsense: the Kalaam, the watchmaker argument, fine-tuning and the like. Along with that perennial favourite, just say it until you (and those around you) believe it. Ultimately, people like Brierley and several other apologists are just the friendly face of Christian Nationalism; they provide the outward appearance of rational thinking, but right behind them are the people who want to put prayer in schools, the ten commandments in courtrooms, and their nosy little faces in our bedrooms. William Lane Craig looks like anyone's grandpa, until you realize that the day he thinks god commands him to shoot up a school, he will do it, no questions asked.

@@Aristocratic_Utensil since you cannot explain the g0d, let alone DEMONSTRATE the g0d, the absence of this g0d... thingie is the default position. It is like the absence of Zeus, Ra, Tinkerbell, or Kii'takkrah. For sane adults, that is. of course, once you manage to demonstrate the g0d stuff, mankind will be able to investigate whether morality comes from the g0d thingie. Then the exact mechanism HOW morality moves from the g0d into humans, etc etc etc. Currently, all the g0d fans are at step 0 in this process.

So, minor correction: a few people have died and then spontaneously come back independently of resuscitation efforts and after being declared medically dead. It's called Lazarus syndrome, there have been at least 38 cases since 1982. The record setting case was in 2008, a woman was clinically dead for 17 hours (including no detection of brain activity) before spontaneously re-animating. As far as I know however, there haven't been any cases of Lazarus syndrome involving gaping torso wounds and complete exsanguination though - as the Bible reports was supposedly the case for Jesus. Also angelic apparitions tend not to herald their re-awakening.
@martifingersАй бұрын
Interesting for sure. 17 hours is well short of 3 days of course.
@ZahaqielАй бұрын
@@martifingers ...Three days? If you're executed Friday afternoon, and resuscitate on Sunday morning, that's not even 48 hours. Early Christians were apparently _very bad at mathematics_ since they say "three days and three nights" and then describe a situation which isn't even three full days and two nights. But yes, 48 hours is a lot longer than the record-setting case. And the Bible says he fully bled out. And he was supposedly capable of walking around on punctured feet/ankles for days/weeks afterwards with no issue. And people could shove their hands into the gaping wound on his side without causing him issues. None of those descriptions seem within the scope of Lazarus syndrome. Same goes for light afternoon zombie uprisings upon determination of clinical death - not a standard symptom of Lazarus syndrome.

Justin may well hark back to nineteenth century poets, such as Arnold (Shelley was another), because that was when biblical literalism lost it's respectability amongst rational people. Today, we laugh behind our hands, when people profess to such absurd beliefs, although it isn't politically correct to admit that..

The tide of faith has gone out and this guy thinks it's coming back in. Hmmmmm . . . . Could it be that the ice wall of organized religion is melting around the flat Earth of his religious world and the tide of faith is pouring out over the edge? I wonder . . . . Oh, one more thing . . . Brian, you attributed the "Lies, damned lies and statistics" quote to Benjamin Disraeli (whose "Gears" album made Cream famous), and I have little doubt the British PM used it at least once. But when my wife went to Manpower Management school, those were the first words out of the instructor's mouth -- except the instructor attributed the quote to Mark Twain. I'll have to check up on that, and if I owe you an apology for doubting your research, I'll be sure to let you know! Publicly. Right here.
