Isaac, I'm pretty sure gothel never loved rapunzel, as in the moments she is being sweet to her, she is focusing on her hair. Gothel even kisses the hair. Whereas when Eugene and rapunzel are having their romantic moments, Eugene pushes the hair away, so he could see her face. Gothel focused on the hair, whilst Eugene saw rapunzel as a person.

Okay, if I was mother gothel and I wanted the youth power of the flower. I'd dig up the flower from the ground and bring it to the tower and keep it alive and healthy for my personal use. OR steal Rapunzel and raise her all those year with a tender loving heart, and then upon her 18th birthday return her to the king and queen and be the "savior". the royals would be Soo thankful for gothel to reunite them with their lost daughter that one of two things could happen. they might offer her a reward of her choice for returning their precious daughter, for which gothel could easily convinced them to allow her to be Rapunzel's nursemaid or head lady in waiting, and Boom! unlimited access to the hair PLUS living a luxurious life in the castle. The OTHER possibility is that Rapunzel herself would beg her parents to allow gothel to stay with her in the castle cause Rapunzel would always be in debt to her for saving her and returning her safely. either way. I'm positive that gothel never loved rapunzel, as in her affectionate scenes with her, she is always focusing on the hair. She even kisses the hair. Whereas with Eugene, he is always pushing away punzie's hair in their romantic scenes. I love all the little details in this film, it's probably why I love it so much.

In a way I think Gothel did love Rapunzel; you can't raise someone from infancy and not feel some kind of attachment to them. But ultimately her desire for immortality out weighed her love for her "daughter" made evident by the fact that she knowingly manipulated the poor girl for years.

I also love when people say she never told Puz about her hair powers. There Tumblr users saying this. And am all "WHAT!" Ya she did. "Mommy needs a little pick me up" She had no no real secrets with her..but the one "I kidnapped you..your not really my daughter" YA! That is bad! But she was kind of right about "Mother knows best" song. THE WORLD IS BAD PLACE! FOR ALL tense and purposes..She was safe in her tower. I know this Disney film..but if this was real life or non disney..am sure she would have been raped or abused when she fled the tower..(leaving Finn to save her..which makes her hate him..being a men) and would have run home to Gothel. just saying..she is still bad. But killing her off angered me I would love her being toss in jail..they had respire of mother knows best(with a new verses)..where they hug and cry..And puz lets her escape into the night..But at last min Gothel is "..Never come looking for me...!" I think the reason for Mother Gothel treating Rapunzel like her own child was to make Rapunzel think that she cares for her so that she'll stay by her side and Mother Gothel is willing to kill to keep the hair safe but she's not 100% good at fighting back. And since she's not totally good at fighting back she mentally convinces Rapunzel that she will protect her so she will stay by Mother Gothel's side and not rebell against her.

Mother Gothel is a drug addict or at least displays all the behaviors of addiction to Rapunzel's hair. It would have been better if Gothel just moved the flower herself rather then let anyone else take it.

Maybe uprooting the flower would’ve only allowed her to rejuvenate ONCE before the flower died, she was obsessed indeed, she knew best than anyone else about the powers of the flower, heck, probably she knew the magic of the flower would prevail even after they made the flower soup and it was digested, otherwise, how the absolute heck did she know Rapunzel had the power of the flower within her, or further how did she know the song to trigger its rejuvenating effects. The flower was given by the gods to the land or something, there were no seeds or anything one could do other than use its powers. It’s a bloody fountain of youth, who the hell wouldn’t want that for one self.

Emem Gothel had to make life inside the tower as appealing as possible for Rapunzel while making the outside world seem a scary place. It's less obvious and more clever presenting a show of affection rather than just keeping Rapunzel chained up. Gothel wanted Punzie to be dependent on her and give the girl no reason to go outside. It's one of the ways abusers work. What we see in Tangled is a version of emotional abuse. If anything it's toned down, apart from Eugene's stabbing. Also, look when Rapunzel hugs Gothel- Punzie always goes to her for an embrace. Compare this to when Rapunzel returns home- her mother goes to Punzie herself.

+Carolynne Walters I can get that Gothel was being emotionally abusive, but even emotionally abusive people can love. Gothel treated Rapunzel like her own daughter, instead of directly treating her as a slave. It would make more sense if she chained Rapunzel up if she only wanted the hair. But she didn't, until things got desperate for her of course. Gothel reminds me of my own mother in some way. I actually kind of think my mom emotionally abuses me. She makes fun of me and knows I feel bad about it. Sometimes I hear her fretting about being afraid that I won't take care of her when she retires. But does my mother chain me up? No, I mean, I guess she doesn't approve of me even meeting neighbors, but she treats me like her daughter. She loves me, and I know that. Just in a stressed out way.

+Dakota Shimmers Exactly. Nobody goes out on a three-day hike for hair. Will getting paint nurture the hair? Nope. Perhaps one can say that she was doing it to make Rapunzel happy. But why? So she wouldn't leave the tower? Not quite. When Rapunzel did escape, Gothel actually gave her time to regret it. If she really couldn't resist parting with the hair, then she should've done something immediately to get it back. But instead she allowed Punzie to go off. Yes, I know she was being patient and waiting for the right time to strike on her plan, but why did she have to come off with a plan? Once again she could've just taken Rapunzel to custody almost immediately. Yet once again she didn't. Even insanity has some love.

Did you watch the DVD bonus features? It gave a little detail about Gothel's backstory. The reason why she hates the kingdom is because she suffered maltreatment from the people and lost everything to a royal family. It was very tragic. She wasn't evil to start with.

I have a question, if Rapunzel's hair keeps people youthful, locking them in a state where they stay young. Why doesn't it keep Rapunzel at the same age whenever she uses her powers? She's seen growing up over the years, and yet when she uses the powers, it doesn't effect her even though it's her hair. Idk, it was always something I've wondered about with the movie :)

nicoisabutt Well, it simply heals, and as soon as Gothel is deprived of it, she ages. I think it kept Gothel young because her aging was in a state of deterioration, and it healed that deterioration. Meanwhile, Rapunzel is still aging by growing, so there's nothing for the hair to heal in her. When she ages past her prime and starts deteriorating, then the hair will heal the deterioration, keeping her in her most optimal state and thus giving her "youth".

Also in “Mother Knows Best” during the line: “that’s right, to keep you safe and sound, dear” she’s caressing Rapunzel’s hair. I feel like many people ignore this small part but it’s also something you most likely won’t catch your first time watching it. So I don’t think she ever loved her at all, even if she raised her as an infant. There are people in this world who are dark and selfish and cruel (her words not mine lol) and if she really learned to love her when she was an infant I don’t think she would have had to go through such lengths such as scaring her so she wouldn’t want to go outside and constantly degrading her just to keep her locked away in the tower. It sucks because in that one scene where she tells Rapunzel that the world is dark and selfish, I actually thought she was generous and sad that Rapunzel was hurting but she ruined that moment

I dont disagree with Mother Gothel being super selfish, and her biggest love being herself, i.e., Rapunzels hair, but there is truly no way a person could care for a child THAT long, doing all the things she does such as cook her favorite meal, go out of town to buy her some special paints, etc, and not care and even love that child. No way. A person who has no care would simply lock her up, not show any signs of care at all. Ahlamkin Not exactly. You see, she may FEEL like she does from time to time (as is natural), but love isn't a feeling. She wanted Rapunzel to love her as a mother so she'd no longer SEEK escape. The paints and food were ways to distract her from wanting to leave by making Rapunzel feel loved and at home. It would have been problematic if her victim ever succeeded in leaving, so she did everything necessary to quell that need and desire. When the truth was revealed and she saw Rapunzel wasn't backing down, she WAS about to treat her the way most kidnappers treat their victims: tying her up and treating her like the prisoner she is. It's cruel, but stuff like that can happen in real life. EDIT: notice she does things like make her favorite food and go out of her way for her whenever Rapunzel noticeably craves the outside world.

The real story of Mother Gothel is in a book called Mother Knows Best here is the shortest summary I could write: Gothel lives with her two sisters and mother in the dead woods. They are all hundreds of years old and a conservatory full of rapunzel flowers is the thing keeping them alive but mainly their mother. When Gothel's mother threatens to kill her sisters when Gothel refuses to turn into a true witch, Gothel burns down all but one of the rapunzel flowers, killing her mother in the process. Her sisters, having been tortured by their mother become sick, so Gothel tries to found out how to turn into a true witch to heal her sisters. Gothel is not fast enough and her sisters die. Shortly afterwards, humans attack the dead woods and Gothel has to flee, taking her dead sisters with her. Gothel loses the rapunzel flower which is the only thing that can bring her sisters back and later finds out the Queen who ate it had a baby. Gothel steals the baby hoping it still has magic from the rapunzel flower which it does. The baby's hair has the magic and Gothel decides that when her hair grows long enough, she will wrap it around her sisters and they will come back to life. Gothel decides on Rapunzels 18th birthday that her hair is long enough but after returning from the dead woods with a sleeping potion for Rapunzel, she has escaped. Gothel hunts her down and when she finds her she ties her up ready to drag her to her sisters in the dead woods and give the sleeping potion. When Rapunzel tells Gothel she will go willingly of she heals Eugene, she agrees, seeing no problem. Eugene then cuts off Rapunzels hair to save her from Gothel, killing the final flower in the process. Gothel then dies and does not reach her sisters as she is now hundreds of hundreds of years old and the flower that lived in Rapunzel was the only thing keeping her alive. Gothel dies the same way in which she killed her Mother. That is the story of "Mother" Gothel.

I think she was originally just "getting back what was stolen from her." Though there may have been some amount of reverse-Stockholm-syndrome, though Gothel's "love" is probably not what others would process as love.

The problem would have been solved if she just uprooted the flower and placed it in a pot, nurtured it, and harvested some of its fallen-off petals for later. She could have ground up the petals and drank them as a tea for quick-fixes. Heck, even a fake bush could have helped. But nope, I guess she didn't think things through. I know Mother Gothel is selfish... but I would have been royally pissed too if some royal family took my life-preserver away from me because of some random sick queen. I know why Gothel doesn't truly love Rapunzel. Her family is responsible for everything bad happening to her, but she has to keep the little overly-chipper burden around because the thing the royal family took from her is now in their daughter. Sucks. The royal family prevailed because the life of some queen trumps the life of a commoner.

The Red Sterling Mc'Bae probably that wouldn’t work at all, maybe just the same as how when she cut of some hair and it lost power, that would’ve very much happened to the petals or more importantly the flower itself. They literally threw the flower and it melted in the soup, they didn’t chop it off or anything. And maybe the moment they plucked the flower off the ground, they headed to the castle ASAP otherwise the flower would’ve died, nobody knows how to take care of that thing, or maybe there simply was no way to take care of it and it would wither the moment it’s disrupted from its place like that.

I think Gothel lost Hercules & gained irrational fear of death n need to stay young forever she later married a king and become step mother of Snow white. the comparison of her with a younger n fresher beauty made her uncontent. After she destroys her beauty n ends up as an old hag she is given the golden flower from above, which she uses to stay immortal and her old beautiful self. She may be planning to marry again in royalty when things go haywire n her abundance supply of immortality n beauty is snatched away. What are the chances that she did something to endanger the life of current queen(Rupunzel's mother) in order to marry the king just as she probably did before with Snow whites mother. In conclusion: Meg became Evil Queen & later turned Gothel. (they even look similar) I call it the Megothel Queen theory.

I think you should read the book " mother knows best" and re-do this. She had two sisters who she adored and they died so she try her best and does a lot to bring them back. It's a great read and it gave me tons of new theories.

Oh yeah I totally do agree with all of this. Mother Gothel is a crazy psychopath. And no I don’t think she ever cared about Rapunzel at all. I think she only cared about living forever and like you said she only cared for her for her hair. If we end up seeing her in any of the new episodes in our next seasons of the series, then we’re ALL gonna be in a lot of trouble!

Watching this made me remember something. In the first few scenes we see Mother Gothel and Rapunzel together, Gothel has Rapunzel sing the flower song to her while she brushes her hair. But we know that she doesn't need to do this. The first time they met Gothel learned that she could activate Rapunzel's healing powers by singing the song herself. So why would she do this if there's no use for it. Maybe she just likes hearing Rapunzel's voice? That would prove that Mother Gothel at least has some affection for Rapunzel and may even love her. But unfortunately, there's the other possibility that these are just one sided bonding moments that Gothel creates just so that Rapunzel feels close to her. Whether she actually loves Rapunzel or not though, I don't think Mother Gothel is capable of loving someone like an ordinary person. I don't think that she could love someone enough to make sacrifices for them or even love someone unconditionally. She is too self absorbed to ever put anyone before herself and her own well being or form relationships with people who she has nothing to gain from.

The story of mother knows best is a lot more morbid. She wants to use repunzels hair long enough to resurrect her dead sister witches. She is the witch of the dead that never received all of her mother’s magic after killing her own mother. Repunzel was the name of the flower not the girl and the memories of repunzel were made through a form of magical sleep put on her through other wishes. She is not a good mother because she was never truly there in her memories. All things in sleep were made real in life- like the seashell pain and the paintings. The hazelnut soup was instead a form of sleeping potion to try again to preform the ritual to bring back her dead sisters.

Mother Gothel is just like my mother. The first time I saw "Mother Knows Best" I started crying it was so accurate. That's my mom exactly. They can't love because they don't know what it really is, only fake it. A good manipulator, Like Gothel, can easily create a false love as a tool to keep themselves comfortable but it doesn't stand up under scrutiny. The part where she attempts murder and imprisoning her daughter is her true nature revealed. It's about what she can get out of Rapunzel, youth, and nothing else. If anything she might of be relieved she doesn't have to fake loving her anymore. It's sad but abusive people are real and Mother Gothel is a type to watch out for.
