LOL, I found my deck and battled a friend who has a ton of these new You-Gi-Oh cards... first turn I had lord of D with Flute of summoning dragon, I had Red eyes darkness metal dragon and 2 blue eyes in my hand, pull a blue eyes and red eyes, then special summoned the second blue eyes with red eyes.. try beating that lineup lol... yea I won and used my whole first hand... no need to have all these fancy new cards....... yea yea I got lucky I know LOL

Trying to get back into TGCs and to me it seems like Yu-Gi-Oh had the biggest change out of the top 3 hitters, Yu-Gi-Oh + MtG and Pokemon. Old Yugi - I summon a monster, set a trap and end my turn. Current Yugi - it isn't a combo unless you use half your deck.

Gravekeepers came out in Magic Ruler and they're literally just people. Of course, back then that was the minority. We still see some cool monster designs nowadays but it seems like anime characters are in the majority.

In terms of gameplay though, there have been a lot of cool new gameplay mechanics introduced in newer sets. Ritual summoning using ATK points rather than levels with Drytrons, Ursartic synchro summoning by subtracting levels rather than adding them (like dark synchros in the anime) etc.

Guardragons, Dinosaurs & Thunder Dragons are all pretty nice for monsters, Crusadias are closer to the old style too imo as is oc the new Dark Magician stuff, Melffy aren't in either group, Eldlich imo are more similar to the old style than to cards like Magistus & Sky Striker, Ancient Warriors while being people don't have an anime art style imo, & the Invoked are more Final Fantasy than Anime, though ig that's almost the same thing anyway.

The main advantage the old cards had is being generic. By opening 12 packs of the same new set you drastically reduce this by having enough cards from the same archetype to have at least a half assed sinergy. If you filled 12 pack slots with 4 different new sets things might have gone way different.

So no joke, when I was playing Yugioh legacy of the duelist link evolution, I tried to be cheeky and play deklin’s double and triple d deck against one of Yami yugi’s first decks. Went second, set up combo for otk, got waboku’ed, then next turn raigeki, then beat down, this repeatedly happened for two turns, until I died to beat sticks. I wanted to be mad but just was more impressed really.

Yeahh, but to be fair Paul would have probably lost a long time ago since he was gaining extra card draws from Tilted Try to get rid of his dead draws. The ruling is that you can't reveal cards that are already revealed, and since they were both playing with their hands revealed, he couldn't use Tilted Try's effect to mulligan his card draws.

Regardless of the results, I believe if we’re talking straight out of random packs, old school cards have the advantage. That’s how the game started, with cards you had to throw together but managed to work because they didn’t require real synergy with the exception of cards like Exodia, fusions, and very few others. The new cards require you to play certain ways which makes playing straight out of packs more difficult.

Yeah with the new ruling about how cheating is allowed, cards cannot be voluntarily revealed meaning you can't accidentally show the opponent your hand, and cards that are revealed by another effect cannot be revealed again, like golden ladybug for example it stays revealed in your hand after you reveal it so you can't reveal it again with another effect, but cards that don't stay revealed can be revealed again if it's not a hard once per turn

If I used my OG Blue-Eyes deck OR Spellcaster deck(with dark armed dragon), which have no Synchros, tuners, or beyond that BS type cards, I'd probably win against that newer deck he made or any newer deck that isn't too OP! 👍 but, Yu-Gi-Oh is so insane, complicated, and OTK now, with so many different archetypes and mechanics(ways to special summon ridiculous $hit), & it's gone so far down the rabbit hole these days(plus too many anime chicks & Far too much reading), that I don't even wanna play New Yu-Gi-Oh now. When looking at old yugioh you have to remember how those decks played it was more control and tempo based ground collapse heavy storm solemn wishes crass clown and some other older pulls were actually pretty good for setting that up. However the balance in pack distribution wasn’t fair to test this experiment the player using new cards had more of the same packs giving them more of a chance for consistency and synergy while the player using older cards only got 3 of each pack setting them up for failure from the beginning with this experiment. Giving the new set player all the same set also gave them better probability of getting rarer more powerful cards while the older set player was basically playing pauper (commons & uncommons)

So from what it looks like, if a card effect requires you to reveal a card, but it's already revealed by another effect, you can't reveal it. So Tilted Try wouldn't work while Ceremonial Bell is on the field.

Well yea, but tilted try takes place when you draw the card in the draw phase, right? If that's the case, when is the card you draw considered a part of your hand as the bell only reveals cards that are considered a part of your hand. Like I know drawing a card is considered as adding a card to your have but like, when does this take place? As soon as you draw the card is it immediately considered as part of the hand?

Let's give props to the old guard deck for really giving the new cards a run for their money. This also shows just how reliant on archetypes the new game is. You could make a functional, if not optimal deck with 12 boosters and would function perfectly well at the time. That 12 booster deck for modern play would just get annihilated, though, meaning you've got to pay a *lot* more money to craft a functioning deck by today's standards. Still a fun showing!

Kinda crazy how much the game has evolved and changed and how older decks have been powercrept. You could take any rogue or fun deck from nowadays and it would absolutely destroy Chaos decks or warrior toolbox... I love the game more now than when it was new. Archetypes and rogue is where the game really shines at

Actually in the second game Alex adding that magic card to his hand and not the top of the deck was a big deal cause on his turn he would have drawn the magic card then he would have drawn what ever that trap card was on his next turn instead of the previous turn. Then making it so he didn't have the jinzo but then he would have been attacked directly by the next turn and lost. Him essentially getting an extra draw saved him the game.

I feel like the older cards are alot of cheesy 1 hit wonder effects that do great things but only 1 level deep. No real chains unless you have specific builds and setups

OTK were a very rare thing back then, FTK impossible. Chains (almost) never went further than three cards. It's why old school players call the modern format YuGiOh! Solitaire.

I once played my friend who had the latest and greatest of yugioh cards. I never watched past original yugioh, so i used a classic deck. He was whooping my ass with syncros cards. I've never heard of syncros, nor did i understand how he was pulling off like 20 moves per turn. He got really greedy and started showing off. I was down to 200 life points, with 1 weak monster on the feild. He had 5 syncros monsters with all their power ups and everything. He knew he had me next turn. He could have ended it a long time ago, but wanted to fill his feild to humiliate me. My last turn, i revealed the card 'Just dessert' which deals 500 atk for every card on your opponents feild. I literally wiped his life points despite his god level cards, with a basic trap card. He legit sat there for 5 minutes analysing everything, he really believed there must be something wrong. I was laughing so hard. I told him "you let your greed get to you. thats what happens when you don't have the heart of the cards on your side" he was soooo fucking angery 😂😂😂

Hey that's why it's called a mistake it happens all the time when I was dueling in tournaments I accidentally added my destroyed pendulum monsters back to my hand I didn't realise I was doing it until my opponent noticed and told me I'm lucky he did because I wouldn't be dq'd for cheating if he didn't also this was before link monsters and whatnot haven't dueled for years I just collect them

Modern Yugioh is about who has the most text to confuse and bore players to 0 life points.
