Tamahagane on its own isnt that fragile. It simply is hard and doesent have the flexibility of said western metal. You see many western swords bend (to a certain level) and usually go back to their normal shape, with relatively good condition. Only the last part goes for japanese steel. While being similarly durable, that steel does not tend to be flexible. It is fixed as it is. Which is why it would usually bend and need to be fixed. Though, modern media seems to be exagerate it. Interesting, but I suppose you're not talking about European swords? In the European swords I see, a full tang is imperative for the mounting of the pommel, either peened, threaded, or fastened with a nut, the tang must go through at least the entire grip. In Asian swords though, that I do see, since uchigatanas I know have tangs that only goes as far as 3/4ths of the handle.
