Thanks, awesome interview! Boston to me is, of course as usual, Tom as the leader and creative, Brad's voice, Fran's bass, Sib's drums. And Barry's voice, the harmonies he provided, were just sublime, and every bit a critical element in the fabric of Boston, as much as Tom and Brad, and just isn't quite the same original Boston without Barry. I like Third Stage a lot too, but the harmonies are not quite the same.

According to producer John Boylan when he heard the drum tracks and acoustic instrument tracks that Tom had done for the record, he said that they were "amateurish". Boylan then hired LA engineer Paul Grupp and sent him to teach Tom proper mic technique and how to properly record acoustic instruments. Boylan then gives Tom the directive to re-record all of the drum tracks and some of the acoustic instrument tracks. With one exception (Rock and Roll Band) all of the new tracks were played by Sib. The drums on Rock and Roll Band were played by Jim Masdea. Barry is watching what he says due to how litigious Tom has been. However, Boylan came right out and said that Tom was very autocratic a my way or the highway kind of guy and that Tom was hard on Barry. Boylan said that Tom knew that he could never even begin to approach Brad's talent and vocal virtuosity, so Tom did not give Brad as much hassle. What most people do not know is that Barry introduced Tom to Brad back in 1969, and as Barry points out in this interview series, he met Tom when his band held auditions for a keyboard player. I never knew why people thought the solo on Long Time was Tom in the first place. Tom always uses a Les Paul Gold top with PAF humbucker pick ups. At that time Barry always used an SG custom three pick up model. The guitar tone on the Long Time solo has a different sound and timbre and also the phrasing, vibrato and picking is different from the solos that Tom played.

After Boston's tour finished up in late '79, Scholz was ready to start work on a third album, until he became caught up in his legal battle with Epic Records, that court case alone took about 4 years to resolve. I assume like Brad, Barry didn't spend a whole lot of time in the studio with Tom, thus he wasn't difficult to work with. And given Barry's chops, like Brad, he probably didn't need many takes to get his parts right. In my opinion, from a fan's perspective, the definitive article on life on the road with Boston is the 1987 Musician article. In that article, among other things, Barry and Tom were described as the city boys' Allman Brothers. And it talks about how Barry's experience helped him get through Boston's excruciating tour schedule.

Tom has spent the last 40+ years suing everybody he has ever known or worked with. He even sued Barry MULTIPLE times, and Fran Cosmo simply because he didn't want promoters saying he's a former member of Boston. He also sued Brad Delp's wife for saying that Brad was afraid to quite Boston because he figured Tom would sue him. You read that correctly.

Barry and Fran are the two last men standing from Boston. Yes, TS wrote the songs but without Brads incredible vocals he would only have a bunch of riffs. Boston was a band will actual musical chemistry. It wasn’t a one man band. Sibs great drumming and Frans bass were a part of the success. Barry taught Tom how to play the guitar 🎸 and not the other way around. I saw a video of Barry playing “Longtime” at a local show and his playing is smoking! He does not get enough credit. Barry didn't teach Tom Scholz a damn thing. Scholz is Boston, without him there is NOTHING. I was thinking, all of them are thinking, If we make one mistake, Tom the perfectionist, will be all over us after the show. ha Turns out, I was right. haha Fran was the exception and I would love to ask Barry if Fran was all gooned out on coke that day. The original headbanger ha At one point, Fran was so in the moment during the break in one of the songs he actually stumbled and Barry looked over at Tom like, Oh bleep. haha Tom, glanced over at Fran a few times like, This is your last tour. ha Then at another point, Fran is gooning out in front of Brad as Brad was strumming the LP JR and Brad looked very uncomfortable. If anybody doesn't believe me go watch the concert. ha

@bradlee25943 жыл бұрын
No, it is not well known. People "think" this, but very few, if anyone, actually knows how Brad truly felt about Tom. What we do know is that Brad never said a bad word about Tom - and in addition he was only complimentary of Tom in public. Big money was not important to Brad, so once again "thinking" you know may not be based on anything factual. And "the band" wasn't really a band when it came to writing and recording. It was Tom's project, and he did with it what he wanted - which was his right.

Tom was the eventual failure of Boston. Things started to get creepy (to me) when Third Stage was released. "Hollyann" to me sounded over-modulated in the recording. Don't get me started on "Corporate America"! THAT was a failure. I got to see Boston many years ago at the Westbury Music Fair where only Tom & Brad were left as the original members. I walked out halfway through because it just wasn't Boston anymore. Tom allowing the band to split due to his inflated ego was sad. He looked for little to NO input from Fran, Sibby, Brad or Barry. I had an occasion years ago to make friends with Sibby on AOL. He refused to discuss the issues going on at the time. Nowadays we hear NOTHING from Boston. I had heard EVERY song from the original album on the radio at one time or another. Not many bands from even back then can hold that acclaim. Very sad! RIP Brad & Sibby. It could have been great...
