Tom wrote the songs and was a great engineer, and granted, it was Tom that arranged the original music and played all the instruments on the original "more than a feeling" (but obviously to play it live he had to have these guys which made up the band) but it was the incredible voice of Brad Delp that people came to hear and the reason they bought the records that shot Tom's songs to the stratosphere. That said, Barry Goudreau was instrumental to making Boston's music live to audiences! AND the most important fact is, if Barry hadn't introduce Tom to Brad Delp, most likely nobody would know Tom Schultz because without that amazing vocal, he wasn't going anywhere. For that reason alone, Tom should have always been thankful to Barry.

Boston was a very, VERY unique situation in the world of rock n roll bands. In the old days, even with the likes of Little Richard or Ray Charles, they already had a band and had played with good musicians on the road long before they'd even started writing their own material. So that once they started writing and recording their own songs, they had their band to play on the records and live gigs. The Beatles were together for 5 years before anyone outside of the sleaziest part of Hamburg, Germany or their hometown of Liverpool, England ever even heard of them. Then as rock n roll got more popular, the natural progression of 4-5 guys being interested in starting a rock band and taking it all the way became the norm. A group with common interests in music who played the basic guitars, bass, and drums would get together and play cover songs until they got really good, then they'd start writing their own material. In both instances, you had the organic growth of a band from inception through on to live gigs and then to the recording studio. With Boston, you literally had one guy with all this great music in his head, who could play every instrument but drums, and was super intelligent so he could invent and design his own studio and equipment in his basement, and worked for a couple years all by himself with no one knowing what he was up to or what was being created down there, all on his own, recording and editing some pretty well finished demo tapes, that all a professional studio had to do was basically polish them up for production. Then add lead vocals and drums. All for 10 songs, and one of them destined to become one of the most iconic and signature songs in the history of rock music. So now he HAS to go out and play live gigs with the demand from radio play...... that's when he basically grabbed Barry, Sib, and Fran in almost a literal last second emergency assembly of musicians and said "hey guys, listen to this album and learn how to play it. We hit the road a couple weeks and you need to be able to play the whole thing live along with me" You can understand why Tom might have been a bit of an ego maniac. I'm not saying it's right what he did to Barry but you can see why Tom would have the power trip in his own mind.

Well, I do think that record label's phrase was a bad idea. I can easily see why Tom would be upset since that Boston guitar sound is his. With that said, in equal measures, also essential to the Boston sound is Brad's voice and Barry's harmonies. Those harmonies are one of the best, if not the best in rock. Third Stage, without Barry, sounded a tiny bit hollow. Not the least, Fran's bass and Sib's drums. Without any one of them, I wonder if they could have achieved the same success. The live video at Giants stadium, really showed Barry was an essential member of Boston.

As it turns out, Barry Goudreau didn't miss out on much, considering Boston's minimal output after his firing. Tom Scholz was more of a producer/engineer than a guitarist, obsessing to the nth degree over detail after detail after detail. Boston could have put out three times the material they did if not for Tom. Personally, I was tired of the Scholz guitar sound after the first album. You'd think with all the time he spend agonizing over the productions, he could have changed it up a bit.

Stopping promotion isn't why Barry's solo album died a quick death - the reality is that the album just wasn't that good. Most fans like me who bought that album listened once hoping for another Boston album, but it was clear from the writing that this wasn't it. It also didn't sound a lot like Tom's tone. The shenanigans the labels allowed to be played on the most important aspect of the formula, the artist themselves, destroyed the goose that lay the golden egg. Makes no sense..Why would the record company not let Tom produce Barry's song?..If it was for Boston?..I think Barry is not telling the truth..What as mess this band turned into..just sad.

With all do fairness too all what stands out too me was Tommy suggested if u all want too do side projects this is the time so brad and Barry went for it because of one misguided slogan Tommy says Barry your out these guys were tight u would have thought as friends and band mates they paid alot of dues too make it but 3rd stage was incredible awesome album but Barry took Fran cosmo and had a good solo and Orion the hunter was well recieved even more so with rtz Tommy uses Fran on the boston album walk on whats that about because he liked what Barry was doing even though he never admitted it

I agree with Tom on this one. Nothing against Barry, but the record label F ed up and they knew what they were doing. This being said, Tom went overboard.

It was always a Tom Scholz project anyway.

Scholz is a brilliant arranger, but he's also a micromanaging megalomaniac. He ruined a band that could have been around for years longer.

This is his side of the story but I’d like to hear schotz version.

Tom Scholz *IS* Boston. That's just a fact.

Without the others Tom on the first two records, Tom is just a studio nerd. You can't deny the other's contribution and just stroke Tom's ego. This argument that Boston is Tom and Tom only is silliness. It's like saying Led Zeppeln was Jimmy Page. You know damn well it was the chemistry of the members that made both bands great.

I like Barry and always have, and I also wish he and Tom could have worked things out - back in the day or since. But with that, I think Barry is somewhat misleading in his version of events. First, Tom more likely objected to the marketing slogan affixed to the Barry solo record and demanded that slogan be removed rather than demanding the record cease being promoted altogether. This is just my common sense take, and it is not based on any inside knowledge. Regarding Barry being fired as a result of the controversy over his solo record - or rather the controversy regarding the record's marketing, I think Barry leaving Boston was more an amicable split rather than a flat out firing. Barry was paid handsomely when he left, something people who get fired typically don't receive. Barry wanted to be more involved in Boston, and because he saw no future in becoming more involved he was compelled to leave, perhaps more so than Tom desired him to leave. This opinion is based on both common sense and prior statements made by Barry and other members of Boston.

Wow, finally someone who actually did their research. These comments are loaded with people who haven't done any research outside of what they HEARD back in the 80's and it's really sad. Good on you for actually looking into the articles and interviews and finding the context.

Tom really screwed up by firing Barry. The first two Boston albums, with Barry, were awesome. After Barry got fired, the rest of the Boston albums were mostly crap. The Walk On album contained a few good songs but that's about it.
@johnvalencia9927 Жыл бұрын
they were going to be crap anyway even if barry wasn't fired. The 70s was a special time for music. Most everything from the 80s is crap.

I read that Barry sided with Boston's management during Tom's lawsuit against them.
