Very good video! I ride a Harley now but years ago I had a Honda Goldwing Interstate. Rode it all over the USA and Canada. One particular day I spent 8 hours in a snow storm, I could tell there was 3 bikes following me, when I pulled into a motel about 1 hour later they pulled in. I was putting my bike to bed and realized it was 3 Hell's Angels. I thought this isn't going to go well: All 3 of them said " Damn I wish I'd been on your bike today, " No bike is as comfortable as a Goldwing 👍 Ride safe and enjoy your bike!

Yours was an honest and to-the-point review of the 2018 6-speed manual Goldwing Tour. It was pretty humorous, too, and I liked that. It's nice that Honda reduced the weight and size of the bike, but in doing so, I think they reduced the Goldwing to a sport tourer. I would buy the new DCT version of the Goldwing in a heartbeat if they would just restore the size and capacity of the prior generation bike. I have an '06, and it rides like a charm with me solo or fully loaded. However, I'm always in the market for new and improved technology (keyword "improved"). Thanks for the review, though.

Thanks for the update. My wife and I looked at the new bike too. But like you said not enough room in the back for her and not enough comfort either. I own a 78,88 and I bought a 2015 with 800 plus miles on it. The points you posted is why we decided to go with the 2015. Thanks for sharing and be safe. I know all about them hot days in Florida. I’ve had both the manual and the DCT. To each his own of course. But for me after trying the DCT it makes riding so much more fun and relaxing. Especially in the city in stop and go you can’t beat it.

And the DCT is NOT an automatic transmission. It's a smart dual clutch system that the software can switch gears on for you. You can shift manually with the padals and I heard Honda is adding a heal/toe shifter. So you can still go manual if you want but the software will ALWAYS down shift if you are late to avoid stalls.

Dave , I bought a leftover 2018 out of the crate for $ 18,400 . But charged me about $ 600.00 for freight . This was April of 2020. 6 speed manual. I believe the MSRP was $ 26,700.00 . So if you don't mind a new ,old bike , it could save you money .

Nice review. I'm happy for you that you really like it. In the end thats all that matters. I had one for two days and a thousand miles and was thrilled to return it. Yes it has some nice features! I found it entirely less comfortable than my 07 and that one is less comfortable than the 1500 for me. I'm no giant. 5 9 200# and it feels too small. My biggest beef is I cannot do 1000 mile days like a breeze as I could with the 1500 & 07 models. The comfort is not there. Living in Wisconsin when I go on a trip it is 700 miles before I get to anywhere I want to be. Primarily mountains. So burying that first leg quickly and comfortably is not there. At 80-85 MPH the total shoulder wind pressure is exhausting. Great center torso coverage but the radical difference between body and shoulders destroys my back. Granted I have disability issues but coverage for the long haul is why I'm a devoted "Winger". I would never put my bride on it for a trip like she loves because again. The comfort isn't there. She sat on it and did 20 miles and said sorry. You'll have to go alone. I totally understand. My hope is Honda will hear enough of this complaint and build a real two up bike again with all the wonderful changes these have. My first impression was no doubt the lead designer on this model was a crotch rocket guy and sure enough the lead crotch rocket designer headed up this project. It lacks storage, wind protection and overall long haul comfort. Other than reliability, the reason I believe most people lay out the big bucks for a Gold Wing. Happy for you. I bought the 2019 DCT two days ago. Yesterday I put a couple hundred miles on it. The seat begins to get hard at about 175 miles for me. I also have a 2017 H.D. Road Glide Ultra. With the modifications I’ve done to the Harley over the last couple of years, including a Mustang seat, it’s a much more comfortable bike for long hauls. But - the Goldwing is far more fun to ride. I’m thinking that I’ll hold on to both bikes for at least the next six months. P.S. I washed the Honda today. What a pain in the ass!

You can never go wrong with a Mustang seat. I put them on every bike I owned since 1978. Did not need it on the 88 Wing. The 07 will get one. Hands down the BEST accessory item you can add to any bike is a GOOD custom seat.

How is the wind protection compared to the old version Goldwing? I hate cold wind so it's important to me. I love the new sporty look of the new GW but I'm afraid it comes with the price of more cold air blowing on me. I heard you say a sacrifice is more air...but is that something you can remedy ?? I don't tolerate cold wind very well 🙄.

JohnnyRebKy the old wing is far far better when it comes to weather protection. My last trip I got completely soaked something that didn’t happen on my 2007. I am going to invest in the larger touring windscreen as it is taller and wider then the stock. They heated grips and seat are great addition. I hate cold air that comes up from underneath a bike the most . The old Goldwing looks to have more fairing protection in that department. As much as I like the look of the new sleeker wings I may just have to go for a 2012 or so. At 36 I'm ready to be comfortable and warm as possible on a motorcycle lol. I just have low tolerance for cold like we have early in the morning . Other guys leave at 7am or so and I won't leave until noon because of it . Of course it's not all my fault...I have a thyroid problem that makes me sensative to cold. But I'm tired if missing out on good riding because of it 😣

The back rest I put on my gold wing blew my knee out. because of the backrest, I can’t swing a leg around over the seat to get on or off. I must hop on while putting my right leg on the seat and hop to the bike and hop off of the bike on my left leg.. I have never had trouble with my knees ever. But this one time, I was dismounting and bent my knee backwards as I was hopping off on my left leg. I have had back rests on my two Yamaha ventures, and on my BMW K 1200 LT, and it was the same story. You can’t roundhouse swing your leg over like you’re getting on a horse. another issue I have with backrests is, when I hit bumps the bike rocks front to back, that energy is transmitted into the middle of my back through the not very padded back rest.Now that I have passed 60 years old, those kidney punches add up. So needless to say, I Eliminated the back rest for the sake of my left knee and my spine... I never considered getting the gold wing because the Yamaha venture was so much easier to maintain compaired to gold wing‘s.With ventures,you can change the water pump, clutch, alternator, slave cylinder, while on the side of the road just using the tool kit. I rode Yamaha ventures for 16 years on my 1986 venture Royale, and two years on my 2004 road star venture. I thought I felt that deserved the best after 50+ years in the saddle, so I bought myself a BMW K 1200 LT. What a mistake, what an expensive mistake, what top-heavy ill handling no-feel brakes machine that is. I never dropped any of my ventures, I dropped that BMW two times in parking lots because of that anti-dive front end ,When you break with a conventional fork motorcycle which is the rest of them other than BMWs lately, that kinetic energy is absorbed by the fork springs, and the fork oil controls the spring. On the BMW when you brake at low speeds, that energy has nowhere to go but making the bike feel heavy,And if you’re in a parking lot turning the handlebars and you tap those antilock no feel electric brakes, they grab and That top heavy weight becomes a handful. I’ve complained to other BMW K 1200 LT owners, and several of them have laughed and said “get used to dropping it, every LT owner does”...No wonder no other motorcycle manufacturer has copied the BMW front end design, and it’s also no wonder that BMW has dropped the K 1200 LT. Another major complaint with BMW is the cost of parts and maintenance. I priced brake fluid change because it is partially electric controlled w/ pumps Controlled by the computer, in 2011 prices, the service department at my local BMW dealer said it’s a three month wait, and the brake fluid change is $750 plus shop materials plus disposal fee plus tax. as with everything over the past decades, I did it myself. $5 for brake fluid That was after I bought the special reservoir that attaches to the master cylinder so you won’t run dry and suck air, and a special tool to fit the bleeder then only fits BMWs..The big danger warning on the Internet was, if you suck air into the system you’ll have no brakes front or rear till you take the machine on a trailer to the dealer to reset the computer.There were a few other things about that BMW I’m not gonna complain about here. But I’m never going to buy another BMW. I took my first gold wing ride in October 2019. I saw this used GL 1800 with only 13,000 miles on it advertised locally on craigslist. So I hopped on my Pacific coast and went to take a look. during the whole test ride, I was filled with regret for not having tried a gold wing decades ago. I can’t believe the smoothness & the power. I don’t care about CD players and radios. I’ve never turned on the radio on my BMW or either of my ventures. I don’t share my rides with commercials.. as for the power. it has right now torque like my Moto Guzzi norge, probably more torque on paper.I just wish the wing was as a light and nimble and had the brakes and suspension my Guzzi has.. my Norge is a pretty good all-around Turing machine. Heated grips, electric windshield, ABS brakes they can be turned off so you will actually have brakes on wet grass and gravel..but the semi sporty riding position limits my stints to 2 hrs between breaks.. actually the most perfect motorcycle I ever owned, and I’ve had more than 50, is my Pacific coast. They are perfect. I have done 700 miles with just 10 minute breaks on that machine in one day on all backroads..(Pittsburgh 51/19 south to route 50 in West Virginia, to Davis West Virginia to watch the Blackwater 100, then the long way home up 120, to 31 ,219 to 422w to 68s.. Beautiful long ride on a hot day. A group of seven of mostly co- workers tagged along for what i told them,”a little ride”The unprepared ones on Harleys that didn’t even bring jackets, gloves, water, never rode with me again.They got so cold after sunset, that they bought garbage plastic bags and put them on to stop the wind. they were lucky it didn’t rain because there was not a rain suit among them.. so it is true, hogs and rice burners don’t mix.Maybe that’s why I never even considered test riding a hog.. sorry I got off topic, same thing happens to me when I go out for a ride, I end up on side roads that I don’t know where they go.I ride the way Marlon Brando described to the girl in the bar in the movie the wild one. When she asked where he and his friends go when they go out on their motorcycles. Johnny’s reply was “we just go “

My 1st bike was a 1979 Gold Wing automatic. At my drivers test the instructor walked around my bike a few times and said where do you shift the bike? When I told him it was an automatic he was not happy, said the first 15 min. of the test he would have me drive around the course and shift the bike. He put a big X in that area of his test sheet. I have a 2006 model now and do like the manual shifting. I did test drive the DCT model and do like the fact that you can shift manually with a button, just not with a clutch lever. Did not have that option on my 79 model. I am disappointed that Honda still has not thought of a way to use some of the engine heat to warm the rider during those cool weather months. Can't be that difficult to have a small shroud on back side of radiator that connects to louvers on front side of fairing to shoot some heat to the rider. Heated grips and seat are nice but not enough.

You stated you had 2007 that is my bike now. I am debating an Indian Roadmaster or the new Gold Wing. Apples, Oranges? Two things may entice me what about the walking forward feature and the reverse. You no longer have to put it in neutral correct? Have you used those two features? Also the DCT? This should be my last bike and I want to choose the right one.

Mike Gonzales wing and the road master are apples and oranges. The Roadmaster has the cool factor and larger storage. I own the 6 speed manual Wing and yes reverse comes in handy just like on the 2007. If I was going to my last bike I would stick with the Wing and get the DCT, if Honda changes a few things in the next year or 2 I will get a DCT.

I've heard with the mirrors up the front brake lever will make contact with the mirror and this can put you down fast, especially in reverse. It's always something! Appreciate this review, saw one for $16,000 the other day. Getting closer to being an option if I ever give up on my shake, rattle rides.

The custom seat is the same as the standard seat according to Wingsoft, has a KZbin video of both seats uncovered and the custom only has the higher backrest vs the standard Honda seat. Just FYI.

My thinking along the lines of space is the same. I went from a 1500 to the 1800 3 yrs ago and at that point I was on the fence for a used or new 1800. The seat and space made my decision for me. I bought a very low mileage 2012 Airbag model. We are really happy and it is really great for us. I so like the looks of the new model but after about 6 hrs on the road, looks does not matter to me at that point. Thanks for sharing with us.

Yes the OEM seat is uncomfortable..Honda went for styling and not comfort with the OEM seat...but RDL fixed that...with the RDL this newest wing is amazingly comfortable on 1k mile days.

Nice job on the video. 👍 I recently test drove a new 2018 DCT on a windy day. Seems my Honda dealer has a few leftovers from 2018. I was very impressed with the low speed handling. It was so good, it felt like I was riding in a convertible car and had to remind myself to put my feet down when stopped. I noticed at 40 MPH the bike was pushed around quite a bit by crosswinds. Leaving the dealer on my HD Road King and driving the same route I did not get pushed around at all. This is not a deal breaker. With 6 gallons of gas up top, the Road King is top heavy and that may explain why it was not affected as much by the wind or perhaps there is less surface area because the RK does not have a faring. I am planning a visit to the dealer to test ride the GW with the manual transmission, as I felt disconnected from this the riding experience and prefer being in control when making sharp turns from a stop, U-Turns and when maneuvering in parking lots. Also, I did notice how much more comfortable the stock seat is on my Harley. However, I have short legs (30" inseam) and my seating position is different than someone with longer legs. Ride Safe and Ride Often. 🤘

Nice video. I also hate the air wings. They are ugly. Test rode a 2019 yesterday and was surprised with my thoughts. Things I disliked, seat my worn out ‘08 is more comfortable. Trunk, my medium Neo II barely fits. I believe if I add a mat that will not be the case much less if I add an organizer. As for likes, too many to list here but the best surprise for me was that I joined the new suspension more then the DCT.

I am the stereotype buyer of a Goldwing. I am 60 and the Goldwing is my choice. I want late model or new, maybe 2016 or newer. I looked at a 2016 with 4,700 miles. Should I hold out for the 2018 with the new suspension and less buttons? Thoughts?

You can’t go wrong with either. Low mileage 2016 is a great bike. 2018 is wonderful bike. If you do a lot of 2 up I’d go with 2016.

I have the same bike as yours but it's a blue one. I bought the DCT model at first, and had to sell it four days later and then bought a manual one. Sounds crazy I know. Just like you, I keep most of the bike stocked except adding a 12 volt socket and an extended front fender. I like the bike a lot so far, not much complaint. BTW, I like your last line about being helpful or not. :D

I don't know about the new wing but those fender extensions will crack the finder. I don't know if all models of it will I just know it cracked mine

@@stephensmith1034 I wouldn't say the DCT version is bad but it just didn't work for me. Simply couldn't get used to it. Unlike those bike with CVT, DCT keeps shifting gears according to the speed and you can hear it all the time! Low speed maneuvering is another issue. I know a lot of folks saying you will eventually get used to it through time, but if a clutch can handle all of the problem, why bother taking time to get used to it? Again, DCT is not bad at all, it just is a whole new different machine. My advice is, if you are new to heavy bike and not very comfortable shifting gears by yourself, then DCT is a good option. But if you have been riding for a long time and shifting gears is no brainer to you, you should probably stick with manual version. To me, when I set my hands on the manual Goldwing after losing some good money, I felt like home!

I'll grant you The 2018 is a great looking bike. The front suspension I am sure is a big improvement. The less luggage space, and smaller seat are a deal breaker for me, and my wife. The trunk, bag space, and seat comfort is why we went to a Goldwing. We will keep our first Generation GL1800. It does everything we want in a touring bike.

@@guudbwoy1974 the new drive train into that 1500 frame would be PERFECT!! I sincerely hope Honda hears us! Overall I think the new design will ultimately be a loser. It will initially get a good following because it is new with some cool improvements. IMHO they cast aside their biggest market. The comfort and two up market.

If you rode more in the winter would you still buy this bike? I'm in NC so we dont have bad winters but I find it more fun to ride in the cold than in 95 degree heat. Also I'm 6'4", 270 lbs. Should I get the comfort seat and be done with it?

Yes. On my last trip to the dragon mornings started in the upper 40’s-low 50’s. If I did live where it is cooler I would by the larger windscreen and lower air deflectors, to reduce the wind on my legs. The heated seat and grips work great. As for the seat I would go after market and have a custom built to give you more room. I’m 6’ with 34” inseam and fit great. 6’4” you might have some issues.

So you would buy this bike again, but I am looking as a first time wing buyer. I love everything about the new goldwing... buuuuuutttt the dang price kills me haha... I found some old stock new 2018 tours for $20,000, so my question is, do you think the new 18's are worth that an extra $5000+ when compared to a comfort/audio 2014-2016 Gold Wing? My heart is wanting the 2018 but I am pretty sure the previous generation would be just as enjoyable to a first time wing owner... What do you think?

I found a dealer in SLC, Utah that has a brand new 2018 GW 6 speed manual without a tour pack--more like the F6B, I think. I could get a pretty good price on it, I think...&17,500. Any advice/thoughts?

That sounds like a good price. The non tour pack is the Goldwing, with the tour pack it is the Goldwing Tour fancy right. There are some differences between the 2. The non tour doesn’t have the center stand, and the traction control, and electronic suspension adjustments. A few minor other things. And you can always add the tour pack later.

Thanks for the review, great job. Personally for me I took a 2018 for a test ride and did not like the ride. The seat was just plain crappy and very uncomfortable. The storage is a very big deal for me and my wife. Saying that my better have was not comfortable at all, seat was too hard for her. The sound of the 2018 was irritating to me. I personally think my 2010 looks better, this looks like a sport touring m/c. This is just my option for myself and my wife.

Storage for 2 up riding is a definite issue, no argument there. The seat does get softer but still isn’t the best. One thing I would have liked Honda to do is put the comfort seat on the tour model, would help differentiate between the models. If my wife was going to ride more I would have gone with the previous model as well.

Personally I like the 6 speed manual over the DCT. Now if I did a lot of commuting around town DCT is the way to go. I’ve also ridden bikes with a quick shift, only use the clutch with start and stop. I found that’s the best of both worlds.

I test drove one and wasn't impressed with it. the one thing I disliked the most was the rear brake pedal location and the shifter location. its difficult to locate and with a big boot I don't know if you could brake or shift. I mean it wasn't a bad bike but for me it wasn't enough to spend the money on it.

Yeah it is a lot smaller than the previous model. I found on my last trip I had enough room for a week long solo trip. If my wife was with me not a chance. Of course I had a trailer when we went on long trips with the 2007.

Many (most) folks dismiss DCT as an “automatic.” It is not. After the DCT and paddle shifters were implemented, Honda spent a couple bucks per vehicle to add computer operation of the paddles if desired. If the hand clutch and toe shifter tech came after paddle shifters, they would not have sold one!

I have a 2013 F6B, test drove one of these, I too took out the DCT version, 100% agree would never by the DCT, one thing I was severely disappointed with was the sound on the radio of this new bike, my F6B, I can hear the radio on volume 20 at 80 miles an hour, I was doing 60 miles an hour with this bike, not sure if it's due to the shorter windshield or what, but I couldn't even hear the sound at full blast of the radio. Any comment on that?

John Keller I found the stereo on my 2007 was much louder then the new bike. Speaker position on the older model was more in the face, plus the faring did keep wind noise lower. I wear a FF helmet and around 80 mph I have the sound around 15-20 depending on were the windscreen is positioned. I’m sure the short shield and narrow front on the new wing make a difference to the sound.

I agree with your comments. I have about 7,000 miles in. To me the suspension is great. I know some find it too soft, but I am not an aggressive rider. I miss the manual clutch in twisties, but otherwise I like the DCT. I had Wingsoft work on the seat and my wife likes it much better now, as do I. John added padding to both of the seats and the passenger backrest. My wife likes it much better, though she doesn’t have a lot to compare it to. Honda says their studies showed that most Goldwing owners only went on short trips and therefore the smaller luggage is ok. I do see someone has bigger doors now for the sidebags, and given 3d printing I think someone will make a new top for the rear trunk that adds space. I would like to see more lighting on the back. I added the extra brake light, but I wish it served as a running light. I also think there is room on either side of the license plate for more lights.

Hello Piere. It is a large financial decision. One reason is I tend to keep bikes a long time. I had my 2007 Goldwing for 12 years. Over time it makes sense. If I were to trade in bikes every few years I would buy used and never new. £23000 pounds to USD wow that’s a big number. Almost 30k.

I really like the front end and a few other things on the new wing. Have you compared the engine RPM with your friends 05 on the hwy? I ride a GL1800 and love the thing, I'm big 6'1" @ 280 and it fits me, I did have the seat modified to give me more room so I could sit back a little further.

Haven’t compared the RPM, my 07 ran about 3300 at around 75mph. New topic for a video. I’m 6’ 190# I find the new bike with about the same seat position. I have 34” inseam. See if your local dealer has a demo bike, always fun to ride something new.

It feels good around traffic. Granted it is bigger so weaving around needs a bit more space. Plenty of power to get you around. Gravel is interesting simple because of the weight. Nice thing it has a low center of gravity.

I sold my 2010 Goldwing. I test rode the new Goldwing. I noticed the amount of wind noise on the new bike is louder. Do you notice that too? Any ideas on how to correct this?

Yes it does have more wind noise. The wind screen is lower and narrower than the previous model. I just raise the screen up and it decreases the noise dramatically. There are also larger screens available from Honda and third parties at this point.

I think what it is... On the previous gw model you had to manually lift the front screen. There was no gap between the screen and the front body( where front head light is) it was flush together with no air gap at the bottom of the windscreen. I took a demo ride on the new gw I noticed On the new gw when you raise the wind shield there is an air gap at the bottom of the shield.. where it meet with the body. So big that You can slide your fingers through the new gap. Highway winds get into that gap and it create a wind tunnel humming effect. That new noise makes it harder to hear the radio at highway riding. I think the solution would be to close that gap like the previous Goldwing. So no air goes through the bottom of the screen. Just Up and around. This should quiet the wind noise down on highway rides. Someone should come up with a rubber or plastic adapter to close that gap when the wind shield is in the up position.

@@jrmiamivids It's basic acoustic properties. I put the new one next to my 07 and the 18 had a much better sound and perceived volume sitting still side by side. The added wind noise of the 18 added to the rear speakers having to fight the wind dead on knocks the sound volume and quality down when moving. the faster you go the worse it gets. It is the same as if I took my expensive live music speakers out of a dance hall and had them face an 80 MPH wind. They would go from great to super suck. Those rear speakers are stuck in the wind. Relying on air movement for the creation of sound they are being crushed every mph you gain the less efficient the speaker can be.

I find it is just as smooth as the older one. One big thing with the new one is the lurch is gone. My 2007 had a strange surge at low RPM then it dropped. My friends 2005 does the same thing.
