I bought a 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 6.6 gas recently. Previous had a Ford F150 with 5.0 (2016) for towing my 27 foot bunkhouse camper. Empty weight around 6400 pounds. The ford struggled towing on the interstate loaded with gear and the family. This 2500 gas I bought is bigger all around and man will it tow.. The Chevy put it on cruise with camper and it will role out and hold your speed. Awesome video and yes need more reviews of these trucks.

I drive so much in town and short trips, but still want to tow a considerable amount, so a gasser 2500/3500 makes sense for me, at least. My 8 mile commute and tons of short trips would kill all the emissions equipment on a diesel long term.
@HalfCrazy520
@HalfCrazy520 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, a diesel is not for you. Unless you tow more than 6 tons, or tow A LOT, you'd be wasting your money if you were to pony up for the diesel. My commute is 60 miles each way. I tow a 5-ton trailer at least 8500 miles a year. I haul 2100 lb cubes of brick in the bed. . Neither of my two diesels have ever even done a re-gen. Either will average 19.5 mpg commuting and 11.5-12 mpg towing 5 tons. Lately I've been driving the GMC 3500 Denali Duramax and my grandson has been driving my Ram 2500 Cummins.

As a yacht owner with gas engines, I would do the same for a HD truck. Gas engines are way cheaper to buy, maintain, and (if you use it enough) eventually replace. Diesel ownership is so much more expensive than gasoline you will never make it up in diesel fuel savings. When you will need a diesel is for daily heavy towing.

It's been totally reliable, no recalls, no breakdowns, nothing but by the book maintenance. '08 and '09 were very reliable years. I don't know about newer years but my dealership service manager who is a close friend tells me he is seeing 6.0 with over 250,000 miles and still going strong. That's my experience.

Thanks for the great real world use review. I ended up buying a 2021 ram 3500 hemi and kinda wish I had done more research on the new GMC/Chevy 3500 gas first. Looks very practical and I like the new engine and how there’s a lot more access points to reach in the bed. These new trucks really do sit up so tall for no reason. I blame that on the fact that most ppl who buy these trucks have never pulled a trailer on their lives and don’t use the trucks as trucks. They Only care about sitting up high and wasting money on lift kits and aftermarket rims

What makes it perfect is the GM 6.6L gasoline engine does NOT have cylinder deactivation NOR does it have auto start/stop feature. Will last a long time! I tried to special order a half ton with the 6.6L engine but the half ton must not be beefy enough to support the weight of it. Cast iron block is much heavier than an aluminum block.
@blueovalfan23
@blueovalfan23 3 жыл бұрын
it aint that it won't support it but they're putting this engine behind a pay wall of a more expensive truck. depending on how determined you are about a 1/2 ton, you might be able to swap it in yourself. shouldn't be too hard if you have a good donor vehicle to start with.

15-17 mpg ain’t bad at all for a 3/4 ton gasser. It’s be really neat to see a chart on how long it takes a diesel’s minimal fuel mileage increase to make up for its higher maintenance costs and ~$9K price hike. Obviously if a diesel is really required it’s a moot point.
@toofastnobrakes
@toofastnobrakes 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen it done before, It’s something like 230,000+ miles to make up the difference in price. But it depends on the trucks and the price of fuel where you live. There are places where diesel is cheaper than gas, and places “like where I live” where diesel is 30-50 cents more expensive per gallon

Awesome video! I love my 2020 Chevrolet 3500 LTZ 6.6L gasser! I have the OEM hard trifold tonneau cover. The front section folds back so that I can access my tools in the front of the bed while the bed is full of camping equipment. I frequently use the bed side steps for the front bed access. I decided on the Chevy vs. the GMC due to the tailgate. I did not want the GMC multi-pro tailgate due to the possibility of accidentally hitting the hitch. I like the Chevy power tailgate, which goes up and down by itself. Like your cousin says the gassers are extremely hard to find. I have no power issues while towing. The Chevy handles better than my old 2015 Ford F250 Lariat 6.7L Diesel. I love the interior of the Chevy, which is light years better than my old Ford. I hear on KZbin that some do not like the Chevy / GMC interiors. I believe that GM has continuously improved the interior. Everything works and is logically (organized) placed. GM is supposed to update the interior soon anyway. Love the hard buttons vs. the RAM's too large of a screen. If you want to see a dated interior, then look at the Toyota Tundra interior. Chevy / GMC combined are outselling Ford this year with this interior. I also use the awesome Chevy camera system especially in tight spots while camping or parking. Some campgrounds and parking lots are tight on the east coast.

I drive tractor trailers for a living and couldn’t see spending 10k more for a diesel and having to deal with the DEF systems in a pickup truck. 90 percent of the modern diesels issues are on the DEF systems and I don’t trust them. That new 6.6 gas has tons of power and torque and is not much different pulling trailers than my brothers 2018 Denali diesel.

I’m looking to go to a 2500 6.6L gas truck. I can live with out the rear sliding glass, sunroof. Cooled seat don’t work well unless your in thin clothes. The things I would want on a 2500 chevy would be heated seats, steering wheel, center console, led bed lights and led headlights. The Denali has been nice for the 17k miles I’ve put on it but way over the top in options I never use.

Never understand why people say its so hard to find a gasser. Just ORDER it!!! (you can still negotiate price). That was what I had to do to get my 2020 Ram 2500 MegaCab with the 6.4 Hemi and 4.10 limited slip rear end. I tow a 30' 9k TT and this truck is great in both the grades and the flats. Yes it is a bit thirsty and uses 89 octane, but I knew that going in. Also the interior is far better than anything that Ford or Chevy/GMC offer. In addition I got the bed step and that works great getting up into the bed. Went up and back on if I should get the rear air suspension but glad I decided to do it. Makes it a lot easier hitching up. The Ram boxes are great for storage. When ordering I deleted the spray in bed liner as I knew I was going to get it done by Line-X (color matched). Then I finished it off with a Retrax Powertrax tonneau cover. Love, love, love my Truck!!!

Right now, I have a 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins and GMC 3500 Denali Duramax L5P/Allison-6 speed. Commuting I get 19 mpg and change in either truck. Towing 10K lbs the Ram gets 12 and the GMC gets 11 (my Ford gasser got 6). With the power uphill, the exhaust brake downhill, and the greater fuel economy of the diesels, it would be a big sacrifice to go back to a gas truck for doing work. I was never a General Motors kinda guy... I still think the Ram looks better and I prefer the Ram interior, but this GMC 3500 rides so nice and has so much power that it won me over.

Great review and great to see a gas HD truck! Diesels get all the focus but I think that modern big gas engines that GM, Ford and Ram are putting in the HD trucks are hugely under-rated. I also don't get the hate on the GM interiors, honestly the interior on the LT Trail Boss I almost bought is what almost sold me on it. Great interiors, I think the Ford (pre-2021) and GM interiors are neck and neck, with Ram being a little better and Toyota being a little dated. Also new trucks are too damn tall. I miss my old '99 as I did the first "dump run" in my 2020 yesterday and couldn't reach half the bed. And I'm 6 foot 2!

I have the 6.2 gmc 2019 slt. I also looked at the diesel but just couldn’t justify it. Torque and horsepower is practically the same as the diesel. Towing my 7000 lb trailer I get around 11 to 12 miles to the gallon but just driving around 19. I love this truck and feel I made a good decision. By the way my gmc is a heavy half with a tow rating of 12000 lbs.

I enjoyed this video. My 15’ GMC is has been so faithful to me though I don’t use the potential of the duramax as much as how I used to when I first got it... The only reason I don’t want to upgrade is that the truck is already paid off. I’d get 6.6 gas as well. Perhaps I will when GM upgrade their interior too lol

Don't know who hasn't debunked this but you do lose mpg when towing with a diesel, you lose 5+ easy on a diesel, you lose double with a gas.

In my experience towing a travel trailer through the mountains, a normally aspirated gasoline engine will not work, all the power and torque is at high RPMs where the engine is screaming, and that's if you can get it to high RPMs being it can't breath at high altitude. Real trucks do not have spark plugs period.

I looked at a similar truck but it was a Chevy diesel. It was a very nice truck but the mirrors will not work for a short person. My wife is under 5 foot (yes, she is height challenged) and the seat is slid all the way forward and as high as it will go. Thus when she uses the outside mirror on the left (driver's) side she can not see anything since the mirror blocks the view. For her, she would need to retract the mirror every time to be safe which is NOT GOOD. I had no problem, but I'm 6 foot. Just a warning. As for the steps, they would be too high for her to use. Due to this we did not buy the truck we were looking to buy; it was "used" with about 6,000 miles (death of the owner resulted in sale) and a very good price.

Cool review. Not everyone is as In touch with their vehicles and that’s ok. I think she just hits the gas and goes. While I’m sure the gas 6.6 does fine it surely will need to work a little Harder to tow heavy vs her older Duramax that had 300 Ft lbs MORE torque with less revs too. Would like to see the trailer she tows in the video and it’s estimated weight.

The only comment I have is that I own a 2500 HD diesel and when I tow my trailer, which I do on a regular basis I don't even know I have a trailer behind me. My previous truck was a 2500 HD gas and there is no comparison in torque and power between the diesel and the gas, the diesel for my application wins hands down, fuel economy is dramatically different too, diesel is much more economically when towing.

I've been considering a truck upgrade. Currently driving a beater 2wd Ford with a 4.6. Always been a GM/Toyota guy. Decided to go with a chevy with the 6.6 gas. Diesel is just more truck than I needed. I won't be using the truck everyday, so gas will likely be better for me. I also find it mind blowing the wt trim is cheaper than a lot of 1500s with 5.3 option.

Gas and diesel are "no different" when the terrain gets hilly? You only lose 5 mpg when towing a 16,000 lb cattle trailer? The diesel she had must have been older... the new diesels are powerful and the exhaust brake is a godsend going downhill. I get at least 65% better fuel economy when towing with my Duramax L5P or my Cummins 6.7 than my Ford gas truck ever got. Also, my Ram was a lot less expensive to purchase than the Ford equivalent.

Lets face it, emissions, crappy built factory transmissions and the price have killed the desire for most people wanting or needing a diesel truck.. Hardly worth the cost unless you are gonna keep the truck 10 to 15 years plus, and are gonna use it for what its purposes are. I have a 16 ram, tuned and built tranny (OUCH on the cost to do that) and i dont regret it, but i keep em 10 years plus, towing three to four times a week (mainly my old school steel bruton gooseneck and horses) and it suits my needs just fine. Kept my old ram 05 3500 till it hit over 300k miles, only reason i sold it, got tired of nickel and diming it, (parts wear out) and the noise hauling off to a roping. I work around big rigs all day, so that was bound to happen eventually. The above truck would do everything i need a truck to do, but the fuel economy, torque, and longer maintenance intervals kind of entice me to keep mine. Just different needs for different folks
