You can really imagine that you have been the talking topic of the week in the village. "Hey did you saw the foreigner?" "Yes...the tall guy with the nice shirt!" "Yea...what was he looking for? No foreigner has ever visited our village. I asked him but didnt understood his answer." "He was looking for Afyonkarahisar." "By walking? I didn't saw a car." "Maybe he is hiking." "Did you invited him to your home and offered him Tea and food?" "Oh no...shame on me!"

that is funny and might be true :-D I myself live in Vienna. my parents migrated here from Turkey. We have some family living in the rural region of Istanbul. very modern now. but in the 80s and for sure also till mid 90s it was a little bit, like this village in the video. maybe a bit more action because it is close to the city Istanbul and because in summer a lot of diaspora went there. but I can imagine, out of the season, a foreigner. I bet, they would have told me in the summer :-) probably full of pride about the visitor with a camera

Hi Gabriel: Pronounciation of mosque in turkish: Mosque = Cami = Jamee (engl. pron.) The Village people said often: "Hoshgeldin" , means "welcome". Answer to "Hoshgeldin" is "Hoshbulduk" (means: "I found well").

Hi Gabriel, I believe they're preparing for winter that's why you see the wood sticks and stumps. Most small towns and villages are the same people generally keep to themselves quiet and live modest lives.

In answering your question, about living in the village, no, I wouldn't live there, but, it's not because of the way it looks, it's because I'm used to the health care here in the states. If I was in my 20's, I might consider living in Turkey, it's a Beautiful country. I'm way too old now, to move anywhere. Traveling isn't out of the question .. I love all your videos, and the way you go of the beaten track, to show us the real countries..Thank you again Gabriel.. What you said re knowing a few words, was so important here at the end. Being able to say Hello and Thank you, and the name of the place you were headed next, enabled interaction with the locals. Which is a nice little spark to the day for any traveller.

When someone says Hoshgeldin, answer back with Hoshbulduk. Hoshgeldin means basically "Welcome" (literally "pleasant you came") Hoshbulduk is the correct answer back basically meaning "thank you" or literally "I found it pleasant".

I have been to Istanbul 2 times for 8 hours transfer when I flew Turkish Airline. Last summer, I finaly get to spend 23 days to travel along the Turkish Rivera + Pamukkale + Cappadocia, and I still haven't seen everything. German DW did a documentary about a 24 Hours train ride from Ankara to the Eastern Armenia border in July this year with a group of Turkish collage graduates. That looks like an epic train ride, I am considering it for my next visit after the pandemic. @Gabriel, have you seen any info about this train journey?

You would have been great on Globe Trekker. The village wasn’t much to look at but the fact that u stopped and looked around it was special. The next impossible-to-pronounce town u we’re headed for I hoped u filmed - sounded interesting. When u said it was built around a hill in the middle that made me think of Phoenix. And when u said the area the village was in looked like Wyoming I was thinking Nevada. Cool video.

I tried to split the name of the town into some "building blocks". "Kara" might mean "black" but it did not seem to help in this case. Google suggests "afyon karahisar" might mean "opium dandelion". Does that make sense? PS Oops, "afyon kara hisar" would be "opium black fortress", so that might be a promising split as well.

Afyon is (or was) famous for its production of opium. In many countries and all the way to India, opium is called Afyon.

Investing a little time in the Turkish language is rewarding because it provides the key to many other Asian languages, all the way to Siberia, China and indeed India. Some words may change and twist their meanings but the general clue should be there.

This place called "karahisar" which is means "black fortress" as you said. Then added "afyon" which is means "opium". Its sound kinda weird, i know but thats it. It literally means opium black fortress :DD

the first lady that showed you a way thought you were trying to connect your phone. the location she told you is the spot for the make phone calls, get into internet via your phone. those stemps in backyard is there just for the cause of preventing the cows entering the village eat their herb which they plant. Also they pick them up and burn it whenever they need something to burn. also a lot of houses are abandoned because of urbanization. most of the people will be interested in you because not many people visit villages like that. since everybody knows each other and they dont know you they will think that you came there for a businness or something.

Gabe, the dog you thought might be aggressive looked similar to a Blue Tick Hound used for hunting & any dog looking kind of like a hunting hound dog is usually a people liking dog. Hounds are rarely mean.Your smart to be cautious & speak to them in their own language. Made me laugh.
