Your insurance company will ALWAYS get the low bidder to do work on a claim. Years ago owned a house at a T intersection, and averaged one car a year coming through the concrete barriers (even the huge 3600 lb ones) through our fence and into our yard. First time called our homeowner's insurance, and they dealt with the provincial auto insurance company. Now I had built that 200-foot fence (custom - no off the shelf replacements) and wanted it replaced right. Contractors arrive to fix the two damaged sections with cheap builder's supply pickets (originals were 1" thick custom shaped cedar). Stopped them, and said they'd have to make sure the replacement pickets matched the rest of the fence. Got a "Duh" from the mouth-breathers, and I asked if they were prepared to make it look as it was before the car crashed though it. "Duh." Luckily most of the pickets could be reused and I had a few extras that made up the shortfall. They still did a crap job, but it was alright as it was under some trees and not all that visible. Second car comes crashing through, and I call our homeowner's insurance again. The rep I talked to very kindly explained that it was entirely on the driver's insurance, and that all their insurer (yes, ICBC, I'm talking to you) was trying to do was fob off the costs of adjusting the claim onto the homeowner's insurance company, which would affect my rates. She recommended I deal with the auto insurer directly. So I did. Took photos of the damage (film camera, before digital), estimated costs of materials, my labour and submitted a claim along with the police report (drunk driver, and almost all of these incidents happened after the pub a few blocks away closed). Claim accepted, I did the repair the correct way. By the time car number nine came through the fence I had it down pat. I was billing $36/hour for my time, which included every second I was evaluating the damage, taking photos and driving to and from the photo place to have them developed, shopping for parts (which got expensive as I had to drive an hour each way to get the custom cedar material from the sawmill), all materials and whatever. I documented everything and, to my surprise, never had an issue with the car insurance company. I figured that I went to a great deal of effort to build that fence and I'd make sure it was done right. The city had been most co-operative throughout this ordeal, and had upgraded the concrete barricades to the big 3,600 lb no-post units (used as highway dividers) but they still found a way. So the take is that if your insurance company is recommending a contractor do your due diligence, as they just want to keep their costs down by hiring the cheapest shit for brains contractor they can.

So many construction tasks, like framing and drywall taping, have been dumbed down to the point where you can train anyone to do them in a short time. But brick laying, plastering, and even ceramic tiling just leave a permanent mess without skill and commitment. Builders should either get people who can do these things right, or just use systems like cement-board-stucco and Novabrick that don't require as much skill.

Well, what happens if water gets on to the brick tie that you put in grading from the brick downwards into the block, could that create water ingress from outer leaf to inner? I certainly think so, armature move for guys that do a really good job, tut tut!
@brando6BL5 жыл бұрын
I was just about to add that comment. The correct method would be to insert the tie one course earlier and build up to it or, perhaps, remove the laid brick and secure the tie horizontally then replace the brick. Driving rain will penetrate a single skin and the tie will track moisture into the internal wall. Duh. Otherwise the work is first class.
@karlmedina52415 жыл бұрын
@@brando6BL thing is, if it had been other way it wild be fine, what I can't understand is for guys that did do a good job, it's probably one of the most obvious mistakes, can understand what made them think that would be fine, and it warranted a close up shot like they were proud to show it off 😂😂. Bit of picking going on here boys. I can’t see much wrong here, as for the ties? Well I can understand why people may question that they slope the wrong wrong way (standard practice), but honestly how much water is going to penetrate 16 odd courses with a window and roof above it. It would be a different story on a two storey gable in the weather. Can you give me the name of the ties please. Keep up the good work, light years better than what was there when started for sure! Keep the clips coming, some people wouldn’t know a quality tradesman if he fell over him. Thanks.

It's there in the building regs. I'd have to take my work down if I did that. You'd be surprised how much water can get through brick and stone work
@justycrusty5 жыл бұрын
Andy Gee I agree, it is all set out in the regs. I was merely saying the risk of water ingress is minimal due to lack of exposure. If it was a large exposed area then of course the ties should be installed correctly. As for taking your own work down, my advice would be don’t do it like that if you feel that strongly about it.

Why put a 4" damp down and then flash over it with a tray? The tray would have been enough on it's own. It should also have been jointed into a bed in the blockwork and not pinned on. This can let moisture down the back and can tear easy during construction. Also not enough wall ties. 450 vertical, 700 horizontal. What you did install, you bent up allowing water to run straight to the inner leaf. The brickwork was neat enough though.

hi great work, can you tell me why exactly did it need a cavity tray,thanks.
@SteveAndAlexBuild5 жыл бұрын
brickstar123 Thanks pal , the building inspector insisted on it as the bwk is built straight off the garage slab so theoretically water could get to the slab and track back inside. Even though the floor has a fall from back to front and any moisture won’t go past the DPC anyway , a bit of overkill I think . Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏼

Great etc work, I looked again at the ties but could not see the rubber washers. Also lower left looked like a cavity that probably should have been addressed. My grandfather was a perfectionist, he fired a guy on the second tier. Finished the job by himself then did his own barn. Then the house, tore down the first one built in 1870's on that Wisconsin farm. All down by 1924, back to full time milking but always commented a good word when he saw a good brick job.

The original blockwork behind the wall doesnt look good to me either. Why is most mortar I see used in England brown, we are more used to gray in the US? Thanks for sharing Charles.
@SteveAndAlexBuild5 жыл бұрын
465maltbie . Hey Charles . The house mortar is a premix one . It gets delivered in tubs ready mixed or in a dry silo to be mix as and when needed . Either way the house builder would have chose the colour . This is why we added some brown dye . Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏽

Should of used turn bar and mastic your flashing. And end dams because you might as well left old flashing in.flilled cavity with type s slightly sloped from block wall. I wouldn't of use that flashing gets brittle and breaks, Carlisle thru wall or equivalent. Great brick laying tho

Made a mistake with those ties through the insulation, angled down toward the inner leaf will see condensation drips flow to the inside not the outside as it should be.
@SteveAndAlexBuild5 жыл бұрын
Termite you’re right mate but those ties have a rubber washer to stop water before it reaches the inner leaf . I put them in as per manufacturers instructions but as I have been so much grief in the comments I will do things differently next time . Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏼
@SteveAndAlexBuild5 жыл бұрын
clive williams . The number of ties were simply a mistake as I am only human I forgot to buy some so had to make do with what we had , it was 2 more than previous person put in . Let’s be realistic , how much water do actually think is going to end up in the cavity , I’m guessing none and if there are any problems in the future I will put them right. The cavity tray is required by the building inspector because the brickwork is built off the garage floor .please watch again and you will clearly see the vents every 2 brick on top of the DPC . I’m quite open to constructive criticism but take offence when after 31 years I’m told I don’t know how to cut a brick . A closer is a quarter of a brick not a 3/4 which I was cutting. Also I was cutting them with a brick hammer not a scutch . A scutch is for cleaning bricks not cutting them . A brick hammer is for cutting bricks and even an apprentice can cut straight with them no problem . If you are going to criticise please be sure you know what you are talking about . The ties yes you are right but tools and bricklaying terms you are way off .

Can you explain why the new cavity tray was not chased into a bed joint, but nailed to the inside face of blockwork, as any moisture running down the wall will simply go behind the tray. Also why fix the cavity wall ties on an angle running back to the inside blockwork and is two mechanical ties compliant with Building Regs? Any moisture in the cavity will run across the tie and down on to the inside wall. Look forward to your feedback....
